Rewriting Women: A Feminist Examination Of Lolita's And Pride And Prejudice's Costume And Revisionist Adaptations, Courtney A. Duchene Ms.

This project examines costume and revisionist media adaptations of Lolita and Pride and Prejudice to see how adapters have altered the texts in order to increase the agency of the female characters. It consists of four chapters: one on the 1962 and 1997 cinematic costume adaptations of Lolita; one on the 1995 BBC mini series and the 2005 film costume adaptations of Pride and Prejudice; one on the Pride and Prejudice revisionist adaptations, Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and the 2012-2013 Youtube series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries; and one on the revisionist film adaptations of Lolita, The Diary …

Production Design In The Film And Television Space: An Analysis, Kaitlyn N. Ryan, Charles Howard Apr 2019

Production Design In The Film And Television Space: An Analysis, Kaitlyn N. Ryan, Charles Howard

Honors Thesis

Due to the differences between film and television production, the methodologies for doing production design in film and television are necessarily different, as both can fall victim to a number of disparate constraints and limitations that affect the art department. However, a large part of the difference also comes down to the individual designer, as well as the intentions of the film or TV show. To further explain this conclusion, I will give a brief overview of the history and general methodology of production design as a whole. I will then dive into my research on the subject, which includes …

Rape Culture: Tools Of Oppression, William Wehrs Apr 2019

Rape Culture: Tools Of Oppression, William Wehrs

History Honors Papers

My project deals with rape culture and the tools of oppression. It looks at the history of rape culture from biblical times to the present. It then examines how schools indoctrinate people to participate in rape culture. It then moves to a backlash towards feminism from the 1970s to the present. The paper then connects said backlash to Men’s Activist Websites. Finally, my paper examines rape culture in the Media, such as the James Bond films or the video game, Super Seducer.

Music, Shakespeare, And Redefined Catharsis, Megan Jae Hatt Apr 2019

Music, Shakespeare, And Redefined Catharsis, Megan Jae Hatt

Student Works

The definition of catharsis has changed since the time of Aristotle. A person does not only experience catharsis out of pity or fear from theatric tragedies; they also experience it through laughter, love, and simply immersing themselves into the emotions presented by different forms of media. This essay reviews the catharsis one can experience through contemporary music and Shakespeare as they become submersed in the emotions and spectacle of each respective media. In this essay, I compare and contrast contemporary music and Shakespeare text and performance in order to relate them to this new definition of catharsis by including different …

The Effects Of Neocolonialism On Indigenous Peruvians, Christina Nelson Apr 2019

The Effects Of Neocolonialism On Indigenous Peruvians, Christina Nelson

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this world, there exist histories that do not make it into textbooks or school curriculums. There are events that are born in the shadows of suppression, with victims stifled so much so that they have no means of telling their stories. Historical happenings do not always have the privilege of being accurately recorded where the pen meets the paper. Instead, these instances linger in the air, passed on from one generation to the next by storytelling and song, aging into myth. Colonization, or the act of settling into a foreign land and establishing dominance over the natives, has history …

Vincent Van Gogh's Self-Portraits, Mary Novitsky

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper analysis the correlation of Vincent van Gogh’s mental and physical state with his application and choice of color in his self-portraits. His life before art held a heavy influence over his self-perception throughout his artistic career. Van Gogh could not escape his sense of guilt from failing his family, and constantly felt like a burden on his brother, Theo, who sponsored his artistic endeavors. Through Theo’s encouragement and work as an art dealer, van Gogh developed his own artistic style and met other popular artists from his time. His friendships along with his developing mental issues lead to …

Native American Women In The American Indian Movement, Raven Manygoats Apr 2019

Native American Women In The American Indian Movement, Raven Manygoats

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Historians of the American Indian Movement (AIM) have largely ignored the contributions Native American women made to the movement. This work seeks to change the dominate narrative of the American Indian Movement and bring attention to the contributions Native American women made to the history of civil rights movements and modern feminism. This work charts the struggles Native Americans faced in the 1960s and 1970s, AIM’s activism, and the contributions Native American women made to AIM. It also examines how sexism and male dominance shaped the movement and women’s experience in the organization and how women led activism that followed …

An Ode To The Imperfections, Alexandra P. Schaffer

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

I first became fascinated with the personal essay when I read Tina Fey’s autobiography, Bossypants. I become so immersed in her writing because of how much I related to it. Like me, Fey is of Greek and German descent. Little details like this resonated with me along with a number of other characteristics we both shared, such as our shared love for self-deprecating humor. I fell in love with her stories, because although they were specific to her, they still connected to my own life. Her essays made me feel something, and they also helped me realize that I …

Interview No. 1718, Alicia Sarmiento Ramirez

Combined Interviews

Alicia Sarmiento Ramirez was born in El Paso Texas, on May 11, 1946, and she recently applied for the renewal of her passport and her birth certificate said that she was born in Smelter Town, Texas because at that time it used to be separate from El Paso it was like a separate county. Her father used to be a supervisor on an American Melter called ASARCO, and her mother was a housekeeper and she had 3 sisters and her mom took care of them. Her dad worked since 1945 at ASARCO as a supervisor, he got the position because …
