This calendar features newly discovered color images from Mexican photographer Manuel Carrillo (1906-1989), who is primarily known for his black-and-white photographs of traditional Mexico. These images from the Manuel Carrillo papers, MS288, are included in the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Library’s Carrillo in Color exhibit, which opened on October 19, 2018

Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez

Philosophy

Reactive theories of responsibility see moral accountability as grounded on the capacity for feeling reactive-attitudes. I respond to a recent argument gaining ground in this tradition that excludes psychopaths from accountability. The argument relies on what Paul Russell has called the 'subjectivity requirement'. On this view, the capacity to feel and direct reactive-attitudes at oneself is a necessary condition for responsibility. I argue that even if moral attitudes like guilt are impossible for psychopaths to deploy, that psychopaths, especially the "successful" and "secondary" subtypes of psychopathy, can satisfy the subjectivity requirement with regard to shame. Lifeline: Making The Personal Experience Theatrical, Nat Texler

Using Practice as Research (PaR) as a methodology, this artefact-exegesis investigates how personal experiences are made theatrical from the perspective of the playwright. Beginning as an example of verbatim theatre, and evolving to become a thriller, the artefact Lifeline provides a specimen of transformation for this project. The exegesis examines uses of material thinking in finding extremes in experiences which become sources of form and content. The research proposes that any limits of the verbatim approach in the context of Lifeline’s material are overcome by allowing preoccupations drawn from other areas of the playwright’s interest to influence creative direction, including …

Journal of Letters

The article examines the representation of Thailand in three travelogues: Otto Ehrenfried Ehlers' Im Sattel durch Indochina (1894), Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg's Siam. Das Reich des weissen Elefanten (1899) und Carl Curt Hosseus' Durch König Tschulalongkorns Reich (1913). The representations of Thailand in these three books have some similarities and differences, reflecting influences from different historical contexts, and each author's individual interests and perceptions of Thailand. While Ehlers' book mostly demonstrates an open and unbiased perception of Thailand's exotic culture, Hesse-Wartegg's book exhibits a Eurocentric perspective, despite the author's fascination for the unique aspects of Thai culture. This article examines the metatextual discourse elaborated in the novel Le cavalier et son ombre by Senegalese author Boubacar Boris Diop, a work in which reality and the imaginary are constantly confused and intertwined. This research looks at the forms and functions of metatextuality, which develop a reflection on the relationship between these two spheres (reality and fiction). Drawing notably from Gerard Genette's theories on the metatext and the metalepsis, this article examines how the novel highlights and critiques its own function as a literary text. In his very first novel - La vie et demie - the question was put forward: wherefrom shall Sony Labou Tansi write so as to be? With a stunning lucidity, the author observed the irreducible gap that separates him from (and yet links him to) his writing: "I who speak of the absurdity of the absurd [ ... ] wherefrom do you think I speak if not from the outside?" This culminating project examines Byronic heroes using psychoanalytic theory across four case studies in media, including classic literature, theater, film, and television. The Byronic hero is a literary archetype inspired by the poet George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824). Typical characteristics include angst, arrogance, cunning intelligence, criminality, desire, passion, dominance, and otherness. The characters I have chosen to study include Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre (1847), the Phantom from the 2004 film The Phantom of the Opera, James Bond from the 2012 film Skyfall, and Damon Salvatore from the hit television series The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017). This article describes the multi-faceted approach UGA Law Library took with their fall 2018 first year student orientation. It describes the process of the creating a virtual tour experience, pairing it with a hybrid face-to-face event, and assessing the impact of all aspects of the orientation. The creation of the video itself involved a multi-media approach using a combination of visual arts and technology to animate a product that has a longer expiration than traditional video or in-person library orientations offer.

In 1952 Albert Camus wrote a caustic letter to Les Temps Modernes in response to the journal’s negative review of The Rebel, addressed, not to the author of the review, but to “M. Le Directeur,” i.e. to Sartre. Sartre’s response published in the journal ended their friendship. This article examines the deep cause of this rupture, Camus’s political views moving rightward, Sartre’s moving left. I examine Camus’s critique of Marx and Marxism, then ask the question, “What is Marxism, Anyway?” I defend a version of Sartrean “existential Marxism” as appropriate for our time.
