El Mundo Anti-Negro Y Los Hip-Hop Blues: Los Rakas Y J-Cole, Josué R. López May 2018

El Mundo Anti-Negro Y Los Hip-Hop Blues: Los Rakas Y J-Cole, Josué R. López

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

The Effects Of Music Listening On Affect, Self-Efficacy, Mental Exertion, And Task Performance Of Online Learners, Hayoung A. Lim, Eun-Jun Bang May 2018

The Effects Of Music Listening On Affect, Self-Efficacy, Mental Exertion, And Task Performance Of Online Learners, Hayoung A. Lim, Eun-Jun Bang

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Online education is becoming more common in higher education, and the number of students taking online courses is projected to increase dramatically. Despite the popularity of online education, there is scarce research on the psychological well-being for those online learners as they work toward their academic goals. To address this gap, the current study examined the effects of music listening on online learners’ mood, perceived self-efficacy, mental exertion, and task performance (N = 42). This study specifically focused on an online college education setting and examined the role of music listening and affect within this emotionally-dynamic context. Data analysis …

The Number Of Credit Hours Required For Bachelor’S Degrees At Christian Colleges And Universities, Andrew Sid Lang, Enrique F. Valderrama, Clare Ruth Holt May 2018

The Number Of Credit Hours Required For Bachelor’S Degrees At Christian Colleges And Universities, Andrew Sid Lang, Enrique F. Valderrama, Clare Ruth Holt

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Trends in the minimum number of credit hours required to complete a bachelor’s degree have been studied at four-year public institutions and appear to have been moving steadily towards a 120-hour standard for the majority of programs. The existence of such trends at Christian institutions have not previously been investigated nor has credit hour data been collected and made publicly available. If Christian institutions are not moving towards 120 hours, as state schools are, it could signal an emerging dichotomy in higher education requirements. This paper presents both the data and the trends in the minimum number of credit hours …

Responding To Chemical Weapons Use, Lee Eysturlid May 2018

Responding To Chemical Weapons Use, Lee Eysturlid

Faculty Publications & Research

On April 7, 2018, Syrian forces under President Bashar al-Assad conducted what is believed to be the 17th chemical weapons attack against an allegedly civilian "rebel" target in the town of Douma, killing 70 and injuring hundreds more. In response, air forces of the United States, the United Kingdom, and France conducted strikes against known Syrian chemical facilities, damaging but not destroying them.

Should France And Great Britain Have Gone To War With Germany In 1938? Maybe…, Lee Eysturlid May 2018

Should France And Great Britain Have Gone To War With Germany In 1938? Maybe…, Lee Eysturlid

Faculty Publications & Research

The situation in Europe in 1938 can only be seen, in the historical light of the war that was to come a year later, for what did actually come to pass. However, there exists a single, great counter-factual question that makes for a really interesting analysis of the time, the politics, and the military abilities of all the states involved. The question is what if the United Kingdom and France had decided—or felt themselves forced—to go to war with Hitler's Germany at some point in 1938, as opposed to a full year later? The numerous crises and the changing nature …

"Did You Ever Hear Of A Man Having A Child?": An Examination Of The Risk And Benefits Of Being An African American Female Soldier During America's Civil War, Kirsten Chaney

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this paper is to explore the social, economic, and political benefits for African American females who cross-dressed to join both the Confederate and Union Armies during the American Civil War. The benefits gained by the African American women who disguised themselves as males improved their overall quality of life when compared to other African American women of their era. The improved quality of life for these disguised women was made available through the increased number of options granted to African American males in the social, economic, and political spheres that were denied to African American women. The …

Betwixt And Between: An Exploration Of Dream Imagery As A Means To Self-Discovery, Anastasia Netrebine May 2018

Betwixt And Between: An Exploration Of Dream Imagery As A Means To Self-Discovery, Anastasia Netrebine

Graduate Theses

This body of work is an investigation of the memories and experiences of displacement. As a foreigner, I often find myself in a strange space between the familiar and the unfamiliar. I use various three-dimensional media to explore and depict these experiences, as well as dreams and memories related to Jungian archetypes, especially as they relate to my personal history. I overlap these dreams and memories, varying the media and shifting scale, so that the line between reality and dreams gets blurred and one becomes both a viewer and a part of the installation simultaneously. Through my manipulation of different …

The Effects Of Fashion Trends On The Perceptions Of School Uniforms, Christiana Lazarine May 2018

The Effects Of Fashion Trends On The Perceptions Of School Uniforms, Christiana Lazarine

Theses & Dissertations

While the effects of school uniforms have been studied, a gap exists within the literature, which includes the effects of fashion trends inspired by schoolgirl uniforms. The purpose of this ethnographic pilot study was to fill the gap within the literature on the practice and transgressive use of female school uniforms and to determine the need for a larger study, while researching if schoolgirl-inspired fashion trends influence the perspectives of women who wore school uniforms as children. Eight participants were interviewed one on one about their experiences and their perceptions of school uniforms and the fashion trends they inspire. All …

Understanding Deaf Culture, Meghan Flanagan May 2018

Understanding Deaf Culture, Meghan Flanagan

Senior Honors Projects

Culture defines people and gives them a sense of identity. It provides a community for individuals with similar beliefs and values to communicate with one another using a shared language. Deaf Culture encompasses these principles, but it is unique in that it has it’s own fully developed language known as American Sign Language (ASL). ASL is a verbal language that incorporates all of the linguistic components of a spoken language such as syntax, idioms, and dialect variation. It allows the deaf community to have a distinct sense of humor along with their own traditions, literature, and theater. All of these …
