A Holistic Approach To Jesus The Nazarene In Matthew 2:23, Dylan West May 2018

A Holistic Approach To Jesus The Nazarene In Matthew 2:23, Dylan West

Senior Honors Theses

In Matthew 2:23 Jesus is said to have fulfilled what the prophets spoke when he and his family moved to Nazareth, that he shall be called a Nazarene. Due to the uniqueness of this term and the town of Nazareth being found nowhere in the Old Testament, multiple views have been proposed. These views include Jesus of the despised town of Nazareth, Jesus as a Nazirite, and Jesus as the branch from Isaiah 11:1. Each of these views propose their own interpretation of this Old Testament citation. However, these views often do not acknowledge the possibility of multiple meanings intended …

Snapshot In A Squiggle: How Painting Terminology Illuminates Short Fiction, Jennifer Pretzer May 2018

Snapshot In A Squiggle: How Painting Terminology Illuminates Short Fiction, Jennifer Pretzer

Senior Honors Theses

This paper will demonstrate that painting terms can offer a helpful avenue to understand short fiction, particularly abstract short fiction. After defining abstraction, realism, and the short story, it will trace relevant stages in the evolution of both painting and short fiction to show how and why the media share similar elements. In this examination, the paper will discuss which features of painting correspond with certain features of short fiction. Based on the essential elements of short fiction, as well as the features mentioned above, the paper will analyze examples of short stories that exemplify how painting parallels short fiction …

A Comparative Examination Of The Hyperbole In Men Without Women By Haruki Murakami And Fudotoku Kyoiku Koza By Yukio Mishima, Jitsuya Nishiyama May 2018

A Comparative Examination Of The Hyperbole In Men Without Women By Haruki Murakami And Fudotoku Kyoiku Koza By Yukio Mishima, Jitsuya Nishiyama

Student Research Symposium

This presentation is on a comparative analysis of two prominent Japanese authors' works of literature. The presentation is about a comparative study of hyperbole in Men without women by Haruki Murakami and Fudotoku Kyoiku Koza by Yukio Mishima. Both authors have significant positions in the history of Japanese literature with readership overseas. The rhetoric of hyperbole seems to be significant for both Murakami and Mishima since there are many examples of hyperbole in their works. Murakami’s Men without women is a lamenting short narrative for the loved one while Mishima’s Fudotoku Kyoiku Koza is an entertaining social satire. Regardless of …

An Argument And Survey On Artemisia Gentileschi’S Allegory Of Fame, Rachel Done May 2018

An Argument And Survey On Artemisia Gentileschi’S Allegory Of Fame, Rachel Done

Student Research Symposium

The Allegory of Fame is a recently rediscovered painting that is attributed to Artemisia Gentileschi. As is common with all of Artemisia’s paintings, there come certain questions among scholars such as, is it truly her work? When was it made? Who was it made for? This particular painting also features a rare subject for Artemisia- an allegory. Allegory of Fame is unusual for Artemisia in terms of size and composition as well. I was attracted to exploring these questions and peculiarities around such a unique painting by Artemisia. Due to the controversies around the timeline and provenance of this work- …

Animals, Machines, And Moral Responsibility In A Built Environment, Logan Stapleton May 2018

Animals, Machines, And Moral Responsibility In A Built Environment, Logan Stapleton

Philosophy Honors Projects

Nature has ended. Acid rain and global warming leave no place untouched by human hands. We can no longer think of 'the environment' as synonymous with 'nature'. Instead, Steven Vogel argues that the environment is more like a mall: it is built. And because we build the environment, we are responsible for it. Yet, other things build, too. Animals build and use tools. Machines and algorithms build everything from skyscrapers to cell phones. Are they responsible for what they build? While animals and robots are normally considered in distinct philosophical fields, Vogel’s rejection of the natural-artificial split prompts us to …

Race In Romance: Racialized Femininity And Intimacy Between Asian Female And Non-Asian Male, Minju Kim May 2018

Race In Romance: Racialized Femininity And Intimacy Between Asian Female And Non-Asian Male, Minju Kim

Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects

The film “Racing Romance” is a study of Asian female and non-Asian male intimacy. The film is based on an understanding that intimacy, desire and love are critical parts of one’s self-identification, while these desires are inevitably influenced by the historical and social contexts of race to varying degrees. There has been a limited academic interest in the female agency of Asian women in interracial intimacy. Too often, interracial marriages and relationships are simply celebrated as part of multiculturalism or anti-racism, without getting proper attention to the subtleties of racial and gendered dynamics that influence both members of the relationship. …

Between The World And Them, Jeffrey L. Lauck May 2018

Between The World And Them, Jeffrey L. Lauck

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The first time I learned the story of the Bryan family and their Gettysburg farm was when I read Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me. For Coates, there was something poetic about the fact that the climax of the Civil War’s bloodiest and most well-known battle—a moment forever enshrined in Confederate memory thanks to the likes of William Faulknerand Ted Turner—occurred on land owned by a free black man and his family. Pickett’s Charge—the greatest symbol of Confederate martial honor in the Civil War canon—had been repulsed on property that represented so much of what its participants fought …

Second Language Acquisition Of Voicing Patterns In Spanish Sibilants, William Hagerman May 2018

Second Language Acquisition Of Voicing Patterns In Spanish Sibilants, William Hagerman

Honors College Research

In the current study, English-speaking students enrolled in an upper-level university Spanish class read a series of sentences that are designed to elicit alveolar sibilants [s, z] in coda position, both word-internal and word-final. Samples are analyzed using Praat (Boersma & Weenink 2005), and data analysis compares the duration of voicing of each sibilant to the total sibilant duration to determine the percentage of voicing assimilation. Given that voicing assimilation in native Spanish is variable rather than categorical (Romero 1999; Schmidt & Willis 2011; Garcia 2013), a control group of native speakers provides a comparison sample. Given the differences of …

Por Sangre, Emma Cahoon May 2018

Por Sangre, Emma Cahoon

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Por Sangre is a creative work and personal nonfiction essay written in partial fulfilment of Creative Writing Seminar: Non-Fiction, or ENGL470C, sponsored by Professor Colin Rafferty. In it, the author discusses her relationship to her grandparents’ country of origin, Cuba. She describes growing up with her heritage and ruminates on questions of identity and national origin. The essay focuses largely on a recent trip to the country in which she discovers cultural and familial connections. Through numerous scenes from the trip, the author reflects on what it means to belong to a place and how to create an attachment to …

A Friend Beyond The Screen, Raymart Pontemayor May 2018

A Friend Beyond The Screen, Raymart Pontemayor

Laurus: Undergraduate Literature Journal of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln

This essay highlights the importance of friendship through online communication which is not often seen in today's society. Most friendships occur on a real life basis, however there is a layer of intimacy when distance is involved. As a result, long distance relationships build a stronger foundation between friends that is underappreciated.

Saving Nature: Rethinking The Human/Nature Relationship, Katharine Barry May 2018

Saving Nature: Rethinking The Human/Nature Relationship, Katharine Barry

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In the year 2018, the race to “save” nature seems more urgent than ever, and yet the continuous foot-dragging on the implementation of sustainable policy and practices seems to continue. There is a quite a bit of time and energy invested in sustainable efforts with, in some cases, little show for it. With the amount of effort put into finding a solution to the earth’s rapidly changing conditions, one must wonder, 1) what is holding us back from fighting against climate change? And 2) are our current attempts all worth it? The best way to move forward in our societal …

Qohelet And Camus: Answering The Absurd, Christian A. Sanchez May 2018

Qohelet And Camus: Answering The Absurd, Christian A. Sanchez

Global Tides

Albert Camus contributed greatly to the realm of philosophy with the promotion of absurdism—the school of thought hinging on the belief in the “absurd.” Essentially the divorce between man’s desire for meaning and the universe devoid of meaning, the absurd is the dominating theme of his works. Three millennia beforehand in the Hebrew Bible, the rich discourse of Qohelet was recorded as the book of Ecclesiastes. Qohelet, a word simply meaning teacher, concludes that all is “vanity,” or in Hebrew, “hebel.” This central notion of hebel permeates his discourse on the essence of life here on earth. This article …

The Whole World In His Hands: What A Qibla Indicator Illuminates About Islamic Community In Sixteenth-Century Ottoman Turkey, Meghan Doyle May 2018

The Whole World In His Hands: What A Qibla Indicator Illuminates About Islamic Community In Sixteenth-Century Ottoman Turkey, Meghan Doyle

Global Tides

In the sixteenth century, at a time of Ottoman rule and production in modern-day Turkey, qibla indicators were ubiquitous objects, used to assist faithful Muslims in finding the direction to Mecca. A particularly well-preserved qibla indicator in the British Museum allows for an inquiry into how these objects were used, bridging the gap between folk astronomy and scientific geography. Applying contemporary theories of belongingness to the composition and function of the qibla indicator reveals the psychological effect this object may have had on members of the Islamic community. Ultimately, what the qibla indicator may lack in geographical accuracy it more …

Early Republican Motherhood Through Eliza Pinckney, Taylor V. Wilkins May 2018

Early Republican Motherhood Through Eliza Pinckney, Taylor V. Wilkins

Tenor of Our Times

Elizabeth Lucas Pinckney was the exception to many social norms in her day and has been praised over the decades for her life work. She pioneered planting techniques and natural remedies, as well as kept a letter book that detailed her life, and raised children that also played key roles in changing their world. While some might contend that Pinckney was not a Republican Mother because she was not active during the post-revolutionary war time, that does not discredit her life from being characterized by the term. Rather, Pinckney was an early example of a Republican mother because of her …

Handing Down History On The Beaches Of Normandy, Shawn Fisher Ph.D. May 2018

Handing Down History On The Beaches Of Normandy, Shawn Fisher Ph.D.

Tenor of Our Times

Assistant professor of history Dr. Shawn Fisher wrote a travel report on his time in Europe during the spring 2017 semester. He spent three months in Italy with the Harding University in Florence program. His visit to the beaches of Normandy led to reflections on the history of World War II and how the lessons of sacrifice learned there should be passed down to younger generations.

Dracula: The Anti-Vaccination Movement And Urban Life In Victorian England, Mary Elisabeth Carter Goode May 2018

Dracula: The Anti-Vaccination Movement And Urban Life In Victorian England, Mary Elisabeth Carter Goode

Tenor of Our Times

Often, scholars examine Dracula through the lens of sexual dangers and exploits; however, there is another avenue that deserves investigation. "Dracula: The Anti-Vaccination Movement and Urban Life in Victorian England" examines the relationship between Bram Stoker's Dracula and the anti-vaccination movement in Victorian England. In particular, this paper focuses on Stoker's commentary on Victorian England's vaccination movement throughout the pages of his work.

Pragmatic Faith: An Epistemic Link Between Religion, Science, Mathematics, And Philosophy, John Benjamin Willis May 2018

Pragmatic Faith: An Epistemic Link Between Religion, Science, Mathematics, And Philosophy, John Benjamin Willis

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

There exists a conflict between the fields of religion on science. This conflict exists, according to Gregory Dawes, on the grounds that these disciplines share no common epistemic norms, and therefore this conflict is "ineradicable." An epistemic norm describes the way that someone goes about the pursuit of knowledge. I disagree with Dawes' assertion that this conflict is, in fact, "ineradicable." Pragmatic faith, first posited as "sub-doxastic faith" by F. R. Tennant, expresses values found in both religion and science, as well as in other "reason-based" disciplines like mathematics and philosophy. This work uses examples from each discipline to demonstrate …

A Space For Women In The Law, Megan Murphy May 2018

A Space For Women In The Law, Megan Murphy

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In our society, gender plays an immeasurable role in shaping individual lives, experiences, and opportunities; thus, it is my contention that justice requires the law to utilize a gender-specific, reasonable woman, or reasonable abused-women, standard in cases dealing with workplace sexual harassment and in cases in which women who have been abused by their spouses for extended periods attack or kill their abusers in non-confrontational settings.

Primal Matter, Lucas Allen Bush May 2018

Primal Matter, Lucas Allen Bush

LSU Master's Theses

Abstract

Primal Matter is a physical representation of the intuitive process, through two and three dimensional forms. The pieces convey motion and tension while telling the story of their own creation. Working instinctively has always fascinated me, in the way of allowing our subconscious mind to make decisions in the place of preconceived planning. My work is heavily influenced by Intuition and the transformation of energy. I am constantly searching for the underlying image or object through scraps of wood and pieces of charcoal, and this body of work is the visible evidence. It explores the curiosity of our unknown …
