Blackdom: Interpreting The Hidden History Of New Mexico's Black Town, Austin J. Miller May 2018

Blackdom: Interpreting The Hidden History Of New Mexico's Black Town, Austin J. Miller

History ETDs

This master’s thesis recovers the history of Blackdom, New Mexico. Founded by an African American family from Georgia, Blackdom is a ghost town that existed in the early decades of the twentieth century near Roswell, New Mexico. Blackdom was initially imagined as both a refuge from the hostilities of Jim Crow society and as a for-profit enterprise. Entanglement in land-fraud scandals hindered the town’s early development, but Blackdom eventually grew to nearly three hundred residents, with its own school, Baptist church, post office, and general store. Blackdom settlers practiced a variety of agricultural methods, including dry farming and irrigation from …

Cathartic Concentration: Meditation And Altered States In Apuleius' Metamorphoses, Benjamin L. John May 2018

Cathartic Concentration: Meditation And Altered States In Apuleius' Metamorphoses, Benjamin L. John

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In this thesis, I offer my reading of Apuleius’ novel, the Metamorphoses, or the Golden Ass. Modern scholars are divided on whether we should read the novel as a genuine expression of religio-philosophical sentiment or a satire of religious devotion. My goal is to show that these are not mutually exclusive readings, but two positions from which to consider the idea of spiritual transcendence.

The first chapter explores the way that Apuleius uses light imagery to characterize the religious experience of the novel’s protagonist, Lucius, by analyzing similar phenomena in contemporary and modern descriptions of altered states of …

Gladstonian Liberalism: A Catalyst For Social Representation And Democratic Reform In Victorian Britain, Jason Belcher May 2018

Gladstonian Liberalism: A Catalyst For Social Representation And Democratic Reform In Victorian Britain, Jason Belcher

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to discuss the significance of William Gladstone and his political administration which demonstrated a unique approach to social representation in nineteenth-century Britain. Most of the research for this thesis focused on historians who examine both the variable nature of the term democracy in Victorian Britain as well as Gladstone’s bureaucratic achievements as an MP. A large portion of the thesis employs information extracted from nineteenth-century British newspapers to convey the firsthand viewpoints of Britain’s political administration. Secondly, a plethora of modern perspectives provide varying outlooks on Gladstonian Liberalism as a gradually progressive form of …

African American Women And The Women's Suffrage Movement In Knoxville, Tn, Ashley B. Farrington May 2018

African American Women And The Women's Suffrage Movement In Knoxville, Tn, Ashley B. Farrington

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and despite the fact that white women often discriminated against them, African American women across the United States worked to obtain voting rights for all women. Nationally, black women used the African American club movement and their experiences in church benevolent societies to advocate for women’s suffrage. In some cases, however, a widespread and thriving club movement did not lead to suffrage activities. In Knoxville, Tennessee, there is no evidence that the clubwomen participated in the suffrage movement. This thesis outlines the specific social conditions that caused to black clubwomen’s lack of …

Public Opinion & U.S. Foreign Policy: Investigating The Impact Of Political Television Dramas On Audience Perceptions Of Current U.S. Foreign Policy Engagement And Effectiveness, Lynzee Flores May 2018

Public Opinion & U.S. Foreign Policy: Investigating The Impact Of Political Television Dramas On Audience Perceptions Of Current U.S. Foreign Policy Engagement And Effectiveness, Lynzee Flores

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Political TV dramas have become increasingly popular with audiences as a source of entertainment after the 2016 presidential election, particularly programs depicting the functions of the executive branch of government (CenturyLink, 2017).

This research investigates how political TV dramas, as compared to network news coverage of U.S. foreign policy events, influence the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of U.S. audience viewers.

Using agenda-setting as the theoretical frame, this study employs a quantitative experimental design in order to measure participants’ pre- and post- attitudes on two variables; perceived issue familiarity and perceived issue importance of U.S. foreign policy events and U.S. diplomacy …

Explaining The Obvious: Privileged Hermeneutics And The Irony Of Explicitly Literal Interpretation, Joshua Alkire May 2018

Explaining The Obvious: Privileged Hermeneutics And The Irony Of Explicitly Literal Interpretation, Joshua Alkire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine why so many uses of the word literal (whether taken from everyday contemporary speech or the works of well-respected ancient writers) seem at odds with the word’s theoretical definition and to explore the implications of this disparity for those who privilege a literal interpretation of Scripture. The examples will show that the meaning of literal was not altered at a particular point in time, nor is it altered on an ongoing basis by a small subset of particularly idiosyncratic individuals. Rather, the word is predisposed to behave strangely the moment it is …

A Shift In Silence, Bailey Idom May 2018

A Shift In Silence, Bailey Idom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Shift in Silence is a body of work that emerged because of a key shift in my life. Using the formal components of line, shape, and value, I create a space representing an intimate moment in time. Physically, the medium can be any material, but I process all of this as an expression of line. Each piece shares the commonality of lines and lineage, while the layering embodies the record of my relationships from the past that directly affect the present. The abstraction and unpredictability within my own relationships require openness and vulnerability. This honest dialogue sustains and informs …

Safe Haven, Korey Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Safe Haven is a body of work that reflects my interest in different cultures that have similarities to my personal background. Recreating familiar symbols, colors, textures, and finishes, I create wearable sculptures that communicate memories based upon historic imagery from areas that have impacted my life. By being able to clasp a necklace or pin a brooch on, the viewer physically engages with the work. This interaction resembles my own experiences within the areas I traveled and artists that I have met. With the combination of different metalworking techniques and personal experiences, I am able to developed work that adorns …

Borges Y La Cosmovisión Indígena, Sean S. Sell May 2018

Borges Y La Cosmovisión Indígena, Sean S. Sell

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

Despite living in South America, Borges rarely turned his attention to the original inhabitants of his land. In the few pieces that address indigenous people and their epistemologies, he, like most writers of European descent, does so from the colonizers’ perspective. Yet he is perceptive enough to acknowledge that his perspective is not the only one, and that native people’s ways of seeing the world may be equally complex and sophisticated as his own. This paper will examine four of Borges’ works in which he considers indigenous people’s viewpoints, culminating in “La escritura del dios”, which is perhaps Borges’ only …

Escribir La Pesadilla: Dávila Y Tario, Entre Lo Fantástico Y El Terror. Dos Ejemplos En La Literatura Mexicana Del Medio Siglo, Adriana Álvarez Rivera May 2018

Las Montañas Desheredadas: Lo Fantástico Y Las Hurdes (Luis Buñuel, 1933) Como Docuficción, Mario Sánchez Gumiel May 2018

Breve Panorama Del Discurso Teórico Sobre El Género Fantástico, Licet García Simón May 2018

Boys, Balls, And The Blues: The Erasure Of Genderqueer Bodies, Austin Mcgrath May 2018

Boys, Balls, And The Blues: The Erasure Of Genderqueer Bodies, Austin Mcgrath

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

The goal of this essay is to re-explore the concept of gender in its relation to genderqueer and nonbinary identities. Before its examination of the gender reveal party, this essay examines male and female, masculine and feminine, and man and woman, carefully critiquing and distinguishing biological sex from gender expression and gender identity using a Queer theoretical framework to contextualize these distinctions in relation to queer identities. Through a modern contextualization, linguistic analysis, and a critical media examination of gender reveal images and footage, this essay acknowledges and analyzes the heteronormative structures that reinforce gender binaries. It challenges the deployment …

A Man Went Looking For America And Couldn't Find It Anywhere: The Wanderer In On The Road And Easy Rider, Taylor Camara May 2018

A Man Went Looking For America And Couldn't Find It Anywhere: The Wanderer In On The Road And Easy Rider, Taylor Camara

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This paper analyzes the archetype of the wanderer as a cultural phenomenon in 1960s America starting with Jack Kerouac's On the Road as an embodiment of the Beat Generation and ending with Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider (1969) as an embodiment of sixties counterculture. Through this progression, On the Road's projection of the wanderer is found within the hobohero as a dissident nomadic figure, and Easy Rider's as a cosmic cowboy- a countercultural twist on an American icon. By analyzing these figures, the contradictory nature between rebellion and tradition meet as hobo-hero and cosmic cowboy reject societal norms in the search …
