Students And Digital Projects At Wmu: Working And Learning Together, Marianne Swierenga Jun 2018

Students And Digital Projects At Wmu: Working And Learning Together, Marianne Swierenga

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Western Michigan University Libraries uses undergraduate and graduate students in many stages of their digital projects, from finding aid creation and translation, to scanning and editing digital images. Using the recent digitization and description of a WWI German soldier’s scrapbook, we will examine how students are incorporated into the overall workflow, often bringing needed skills to the project and gaining valuable hands-on experience with archival materials, scanning equipment and software, and metadata creation.

Habsburg’S Last War: The Filmic Memory (1918 To The Present), Hannes Leidinger Jun 2018

Habsburg’S Last War: The Filmic Memory (1918 To The Present), Hannes Leidinger

Habsburg's Last War: The Filmic Memory (1918 to the Present)

A divergent survey of scholarship on World War I cinema produced in succession countries of the Habsburg Empire. This untapped body of film records a contentious phase in world history, from the perspective of an often misunderstood, yet pivotal, region. The volume gathers scholarly essays exploring the intersections between the political, historical, and aesthetic, as expressed in the region’s various “moving pictures,” with sustained attention to the relationship between artistic representation and collective memory.

The Veterans' Lethal Memory Of Battle: The Turmoil Of Moral Injury, Nouf Arige Jun 2018

The Veterans' Lethal Memory Of Battle: The Turmoil Of Moral Injury, Nouf Arige

Student Theses

After the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, returning veterans battle a severe form of moral trauma that is recently recognized by psychologists and analysts as “moral injury”. This moral and psychological wound has a deep impact on these veterans who return home emotionally wrecked, changed and in need for urgent care, emotional support and medical intervention. The term “moral injury” has social, emotional and psychological effects on returning veterans, and it has its distinct qualities from PTSD. Despite the mediocre academic debate about the existence of the term or its prevalence among veterans, enough evidence has been provided to elicit the …

A Performance Guide To New Studies For Clarinet By Louis Desantis, Samuel Schreiber

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Louis DeSantis (1893-1940) was a prominent Italian-American clarinetist during the twentieth century. His musical training began in Naples and after immigrating to America in 1912, he held principal clarinet positions with the Chicago Civic Opera Company (1914-1917), St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (1925-1926), Cleveland Orchestra (1926-1929), Philadelphia Orchestra (1930) and the CBS Symphony Orchestra (1931-1940).

Louis DeSantis’s New Studies for Clarinet offers the clarinetist a chance to further familiarize himself with selected orchestral excerpts while also exploring the beautiful aspects of the Italian “bel canto” singing style. The orchestral excerpts come from Ambroise Thomas’s Mignon, Franz Liszt’s Second Hungarian Rhapsody …

James Joyce: I. Am. A. Discover Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space.

James Joyce (Ulysses,p.31).

In Ulysses, on the morning of the 16th June 1904, Stephen Dedalus is striding on Sandymount strand, thinking about time and place as he moves. Later in the day, Leopold Bloom writes I. AM. A.with a stick in the sand on the same Sandymount strand. His scrubbed words will wash away with the tide but remain forever in the novel.

Using geotracking, I recreated the same ephemeral I. AM. …

Diamante, Robert, Wendy Chapkis

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Robert Diamante is a photographer from an Italian America family from New Jersey. He also has a graduate degree in theology. At an early age, he began to doubt religious dogma. He came out as gay in 10th grade and stood up against homophobic taunting by successfully physically defending himself. He briefly had a girlfriend in high school who remains one of his best friends. He moved to NYC and attended Pratt University before transferring to the Portland School of Art (now MECA) where his interests in art and theology combined in a body of work based on Catholic …
