Photo Reference Library The Creation Of A Desperately Needed Figure Drawing Reference Library For Design And Art Students, Gregory Bean, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The idea for this project arose from the need to provide BYU Design and Art Students with an appropriate photo reference for life drawing. Solid drawing skills have always been the foundation for most visual arts. For hundreds of years, artists have learned those skills by spending countless hours drawing the human figure. Even during times when figurative art was overshadowed by more abstract forms, BYU continued the traditional teaching methods in order to help young artists gain the skills needed for more figurative pursuits like animation and illustration. That tradition continues today; however, unlike most art schools, BYU does …
Woodwind Instrument Repair, Emily Brown, Ray Smith
Woodwind Instrument Repair, Emily Brown, Ray Smith
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Over the past year I was given the opportunity to heavily research the repair of woodwind instruments and it was funded by an Orca grant. For 6 weeks I learned from woodwind repair experts at Summerhay’s music store in Murray, Utah. We would work together for about four hours per week and I would observe and receive instruction from them. I then used what I learned during my internship with Summerhay’s at my job in the Instrument Office at BYU by helping repair BYU instruments.
The Relationship Of Music And [Emotion]: An Experiment In Areas Of Brain Activity, Caleb Cuzner, Steve Ricks, Neal Bangerter
The Relationship Of Music And [Emotion]: An Experiment In Areas Of Brain Activity, Caleb Cuzner, Steve Ricks, Neal Bangerter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In order to study the relationship between music and color in areas of brain activity, I proposed to have participants’ brains scanned by an MRI machine while seeing different colors and listening to contrasting music samples. After learning that aural and visual response use completely different areas of the brain, the study was modified to instead connect emotions to music, since emotional response to music can be mapped in the brain. Based on the resulting data, I wrote a composition to be played by DuoX, a group in Amsterdam. This composition was written in segments, and the performers chose which …
The Gamelan And The Piano: Instruments For Cultural Exchange, Zach Froelich, Jermey Grimshaw
The Gamelan And The Piano: Instruments For Cultural Exchange, Zach Froelich, Jermey Grimshaw
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project began with a simple idea; what elements are important in representing other culture’s music and do we overlook certain elements because of our cultural biases? I wanted to see what would happen if I merged the quintessentially Western instrument, the piano, with the Balinese gamelan. This had been explored by previous composers who have made transcriptions of Balinese music for piano and have taken Balinese musical forms and composed new pieces for western instruments but they had ignored aspects of Balinese music that the Balinese consider extremely important. Balinese instruments are very carefully tuned using a scale that …

“I Want To Be Who I Am”: Stories Of Rejecting Binary Gender, Ana Balius
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Historically, in academic literature—sociological and otherwise—surrounding the daily lives of LGBT+ people, people who reject binary gender are very marginally represented. In this study, I specifically seek to understand the way my participants articulate their sense of their gender identities through the stories they tell of their experiences. This study attempts to answer the following questions: What are the stories of gender identity construction for people who reject binary gender? How do they understand the ways they are held accountable to binary gender in the day-to-day? How do they perceive and make meaning of gender in their lives? Through ten …

An Analytical Study On Ministerial Organizations Status In The Historiography Of Ravandi, Reza Bitarafan, Fereydoon Allahyari, Ali Akbar Kajbaf
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The ministry organization as a symbol of Iranian sreaming is the important element in Iranian historiography. Santo Tomás Apóstol De Abiquiú Church, Abiquiú, New Mexico - Burial Register Extractions 1777-1827, Samuel Sisneros
University Libraries Staff Publications
This dataset was created as part of a recovery project of several New Mexico Catholic Church registers that were missing since 1933 or perhaps earlier. The registers contain entries of parishioners being baptized, married and receiving burial rites at the church of Santo Tomás Apóstol de Abiquiú, Abiquiú, New Mexico. The Center for Southwest Research (CSWR) at UNM digitized the registers, at which time a surrogate microfilm copy was made and the originals were transferred to the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The microfilm edition has been catalogued in the UNM library system. Extractions of the registers were …
Taiwanese Comedies Under The Shadow Of The Chinese Market, James N. Udden
Taiwanese Comedies Under The Shadow Of The Chinese Market, James N. Udden
Cinema & Media Studies Faculty Publications
Comedy is arguably the most local of genres. Tropical Fish (1995) is a Taiwanese comedy that made no effort to disguise its local flavour, and was largely unseen outside of Taiwan. Recent Taiwanese comedies such as You Are the Apple of My Eye (2011), The Wonderful Wedding (2015) and Our Times (2015) have achieved not only success in Taiwan, but also unprecedented box office in the mainland Chinese market. Compared to Tropical Fish, all three films also seemingly tone down the local flavour to varying degrees. This is due to the irresistible pull of recent opportunities posed by the …

Mountaineers Patrol Races At Snoqualmie Pass: A Grand Tradition Revisited, John W. Lundin
Mountaineers Patrol Races At Snoqualmie Pass: A Grand Tradition Revisited, John W. Lundin
Works by Local Authors
In February 2014, the Mountaineers recreated one of the club’s grand traditions by holding the first Patrol Race since 1941, an 18.5 mile cross-country event along the crest of the Cascades between its two lodges, Snoqualmie Lodge and Meany Ski Hut at Martin near Stampede Pass. The race was variously reported to be 18, 18.5 or 20 miles long. From 1930 to 1941, three man patrol teams competed in the event that was based on military patrol races which were common in Europe. Initially the race was just for club members, but beginning in 1936, Open Patrol Races were held …

Seattle’S Municipal Ski Park At Snoqualmie Summit 1934-1940, John W. Lundin
Works by Local Authors
The Seattle Park Board opened its Municipal Ski Park at Snoqualmie Summit in January 1934, on U.S. Forest Service land, and operated it as a park facility through the ski season of 1940. This was likely the only municipally owned and operated ski area in the country at the time. The Ski Park was made possible by the availability of federal funds under programs adopted by the Roosevelt Administration to put people back to work in the Great Depression, and reflects how skiing had grown in popularity in the Northwest by the early 1930s.

A Narrative And Performative Methodology For Understanding Adolescent Cancer Stories, Patrick Mcelearney
A Narrative And Performative Methodology For Understanding Adolescent Cancer Stories, Patrick Mcelearney
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The field of health communication places considerable attention on coping with cancer, typically using social scientific approaches to investigate uncertainty, information, and/or social networks. Social scientific models of coping with adolescent cancer often measure how behaviors seek to manage cancer’s uncontrollability and/or uncertainty; however, how adolescents cope with cancer has been unclear. Short-term studies show adolescents typically and atypically cope. Long-term studies show a significant portion of survivors exhibit post-traumatic stress. The narrative and performative turns expose the role narratives and performatives play in shaping human subjects as meaning makers rather than merely information sharers. A narrative subject reframes cancer’s …

Early Skiing On Snoqualmie Pass: The Opening Of The Milwaukee Ski Bowl In The Winter Of 1938 Changed Local Skiing, John W. Lundin
Works by Local Authors
The late 1930s were exciting times for Pacific Northwest skiers. The opening of the country’s first destination ski resort in Sun Valley, Idaho in 1936, by the Union Pacific Railroad, where the chair lift was invented and first installed, changed the ski industry forever and the area attracted skiers from all over the world. Seattle newspapers regularly reported on local skiers traveling by train to Sun Valley to enjoy the attractions if this international resort.
Western Washington skiing was organized around private ski clubs, and ski racing competitions were held most weekends in many areas accessible by car, including Mount …
Review Of Religion And Nationalism In Southeast Asia, Michael S. Barr
Review Of Religion And Nationalism In Southeast Asia, Michael S. Barr
Reviews
It is a sign of how much the field of social sciences has changed that a new book interrogating the linkages and relationships between religion and nationalism sits in a crowded field. A couple of decades ago, scholars like Peter van der Veer and Mark Jeurgensmeyer had the religious part of the field to themselves, even as historians and other area studies scholars shook their heads, wondering at this blind spot in international relations scholarship. Even more recently it was still fashionable to look forward to the death of nations and nationalism at the hands of regionalism, globalization, and cosmopolitanism.

The Role Of Bilingualism On Affix Borrowing: The Case Of Nominal And Verbal Derivation In Chimalaba, Hamisi Amani, Abel Y. Mreta
The Role Of Bilingualism On Affix Borrowing: The Case Of Nominal And Verbal Derivation In Chimalaba, Hamisi Amani, Abel Y. Mreta
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper describes an interesting case of the role of bilingualism on affix borrowing from Kiswahili into Chimalaba. The data were collected through interviews, previous collected corpora, native narratives and targeted elicitations. Thomason’s (2001), Borrowing Scale (BS) and the Principle of Functional Explanation (PFE) guided the analysis. The BS predicts the level of intensity of contact with possible socio-historical factors for borrowing of particular structural features, whereas the PFE through a Multi-Causation Model (MCM) specifies the interplay of factors in promoting structural borrowing in a hierarchy. The findings indicate that bilingualism plays an intermediary role in promoting affix borrowing in …
An Investigation Of Performance In National English Language Examinations In Tanzania: A Curriculum Processes Perspective, Gastor Mapunda
An Investigation Of Performance In National English Language Examinations In Tanzania: A Curriculum Processes Perspective, Gastor Mapunda
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper is a result of observations of teachers, employers and language researchers that many Tanzanian students who are at the ordinary level of secondary education have not been doing well in their national English language examinations. The results became worse in the 2012 examinations. The current study focused on curricula processes, namely syllabus preparation, teacher preparedness for handling syllabus demands, examination processes, and how all these are coordinated. Using semi-structured interview, questionnaire, and documentary review methods, the findings reveal that there are inefficiencies when it comes to engaging some important stakeholders such as teachers, parents, and learners. Additionally, the …

The Writer And Africa’S Post-Colonial Crisis: Ideology, Language And Representation In Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong’O’S A Grain Of Wheat, Nicholas Kamau-Goro
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This article attempts a re-reading of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s A Grain of Wheat within the broader context of Africa’s cultural history. Faced with the reality of the failure of the post-colonial state to deliver on the promises of independence, the author is confronted with a dilemma: how does he transcend the disillusion and sense of despair engendered by this failure? To answer this question, I read the novel through the prism of post colonial theory to illustrate how Ngũgĩ’s attempts to mediate Africa’s post-colonial crisis precipitates a review of his ideological stances leading to a jettisoning of the liberal humanist …

Over the course of 2,000 years, theologians have accreted mountains of writings on every aspect of the Christian faith. While even devoted students of Christian doctrine likely will not have time to scale all of the peaks in a single academic lifetime, they cannot afford to skip completely over one of the highest summits: the documents of the “teaching arm” of the Catholic Church, the Magisterium, which safeguards the deposit of faith and interprets controversies in light of it. Those approaching doctrinal matters, such as the atonement and the virgin birth, from a Protestant perspective may find it beneficial to …
