Remember My Chains: New Testament Perspectives On Incarceration, Matthew L. Skinner Jul 2018

Remember My Chains: New Testament Perspectives On Incarceration, Matthew L. Skinner

Faculty Publications

Understanding the physical realities and social attitudes concerning incarceration in the ancient world provides a fuller context to the New Testament’s unadorned and ambiguous references to people’s experience of being held in custody. The context is crucial for interpreting biblical passages that commend caring for prisoners, that reaffirm God’s strength and nullify the ignominy associated with incarceration, and that declare God’s power over the means and motives of imperial coercion. Such passages also compel the contemporary church to advocate on behalf of prisoners and to denounce the systems that regularly victimize them.

Queer Lives In Archives: Intelligibility And Forms Of Memory, Gina Watts Jul 2018

Queer Lives In Archives: Intelligibility And Forms Of Memory, Gina Watts

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

Exploring queer archives through a variety of texts and case studies, this paper seeks to understand three primary themes: the departure of traditional archival theory in queer archives, the absence of records and what they might mean for queer history, and a conception of queer time and space contributed to by archival records. Together, these suggest a specific form of intelligibility and memory available to people identifying as queer through the existence of these communal archives, one which reaffirms a history that some were determined to bury and which challenges and expands typical understandings of activism in the archival profession. …

On The (Male) Fringes: How Early Religious Women Remain “Subordinate” In World History Textbooks, Erica M. Southworth

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

Second Wave feminist researchers identified male-dominated curriculum formats in late twentieth century curriculum materials. This study builds off their work and advances the conversation of women’s inclusion by current United States secondary world history textbook content via a feminist lens to determine the extent of women’s agency in the accounts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The purpose was to determine if textbooks portrayed these patriarchal religions as exclusively male, thereby presenting inaccurate portrayals of the religions and the agents involved, which directly violates NCSS Standards. This study used critical discourse analysis to identify patterns of female marginalization and omission, indicating …

Early Latter-Day Saint Martyrs: The Jesse Woods And Armela Shanks Berry Family, Shauna Timpson Johnson Jul 2018

Early Latter-Day Saint Martyrs: The Jesse Woods And Armela Shanks Berry Family, Shauna Timpson Johnson

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

On 10 August 1884, three Mormon missionaries, Elders William S. Berry, Henry B. Thompson, and John H. Gibbs, met at the house of James Condor in Cane Creek, Tennessee, for Sunday worship services. They had just finished singing a hymn when a mob rushed up to Condor’s front gate. Historian B. H. Roberts described the dramatic scene:

Elder Gibbs had just taken up his Bible . . . when a man disguised—which afterward proved to be David Hinson—came in at the front door, crossed the room, took down a shotgun suspended on hooks over the back door, and then took …

Novel Commonplaces: Quotation, Epigraphs, And Literary Authority, Claudia Stokes Jul 2018

Novel Commonplaces: Quotation, Epigraphs, And Literary Authority, Claudia Stokes

English Faculty Research

Until the middle of the nineteenth century, commonplacing was a habitual practice of middle-class US households, undertaken by children and adults alike to record notable quotations and to cultivate their literary taste. Though it declined in popularity with the rise of the scrapbook in the midcentury, commonplacing was for centuries a standard feature of both educational curricula and domestic literacy, with generations of students instructed in the intellectual and moral benefits of selecting and copying passages culled from reading. Commonplace books offer a wealth of vital information about US literary culture, for they not only illuminate eighteenth- and nineteenth-century reading …

The Recreational Landscape Of Weltevreden Since Indonesian Colonization, Evawani Ellisa Jul 2018

The Recreational Landscape Of Weltevreden Since Indonesian Colonization, Evawani Ellisa

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This paper explores the formation of recreational landscapes in Weltevreden (now the central part of Jakarta) during the colonial age. Before the 20th Century, the Dutch colonial government pursued the so-called "liberal policies" that consequently, the colony needed to go beyond the narrow objective of economic gain, by promoting social institution to improve the quality of life. It encompassed governmental, educational, and religious aspects, that bring progress and more opportunities to gain prosperity. Recreations formulated as part of the essential elements of personal development and civilization to reflect the values of the daily life and introduce modernity. The study found …

Changing Perception Of Lgbt People Through Performances - Theater And Television In America And In Japan, Atsushi Fujita

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This paper examines how LGBT representations in popular media have changed people's perception and is eventually changing society. American TV programs and theater have played significant roles in terms of advancement of LGBT issues. I look at three TV shows that made LGBT people visible in American society, and three revival theatrical productions on Broadway that urge us to look back at the history and keep fighting for equality. Compared to the U.S., Japan has a long way to go in terms of LGBT issues. However, social and political changes are happening especially in recent years. I analyze three recent …

Conjure Americana (Relg 93) Syllabus, Yvonne Patricia Chireau Jul 2018

Conjure Americana (Relg 93) Syllabus, Yvonne Patricia Chireau

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

This course rethinks the category of “magic” as a subset of “Religion” by looking at sources and materials from African American spiritual traditions that have historically efface these distinctions. Owen Davies said that “books of magic are magical books.” But in reviewing digital resources and library collections it is clear that there is a dearth of electronically archived sources on this topic, particularly those sources from within the American context. What I want to consider is the idea of the “magical book” as historical object, and even their uses as religious artifacts and ritual items. By studying the intersections between …

The Usage Of The French Definite And Indefinite Articles(การใช้คํานําหน้านามภาษาฝรั่งเศส Article Defini-Indefini), Wannachai Kampeera

Journal of Letters

This article proposes guidelines for the usage of the French definite and indefinite articles. I analyze the problem of using wrong-type articles by Thai learners of French. This difficulty seems to be rooted in the lack of understanding of the meaning of the articles. The survey of books for lea rners of French, written by both Thai and French authors, suggests that most explanations on the use of the articles focus on the "form" and not the "meaning". I thus explain the semantic role of the articles with regard to nouns. I provide guidelines for using the definite and indefinite …

Teaching The Doctrine Of The Family: A South African Example, Khumbulani D. Mdletshe, Michael A. Goodman

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Early in 2015, I visited my aunt’s home. She lives in one of the largest townships in South Africa, an urban residential area with a predominantly black African population. Townships often have higher unemployment, greater poverty, and younger populations than other areas in South Africa. Townships also tend to have higher levels of risk behaviors such as drug abuse, unprotected sex, and crime. This was my first visit to my aunt’s home in five years. As I entered the home, I noticed some young people I had never met. My aunt, who is in her early sixties, began to introduce …

An Analysis Of The Joseph Smith Translation Of 1 Corinthians 15:40, Jared T. Parker, Todd B. Parker

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The Joseph Smith Translation ( JST) of 1 Corinthians 15:40 is significant for the Latter-day Saint (LDS) community because the King James Version (KJV) is closely associated with the LDS doctrine of three degrees of glory in the Resurrection. Of particular interest is that JST 1 Corinthians 15:40 adds two phrases to the KJV,1 in bold below:

Maurice Halperin: From Sooner Subversive To Soviet Spy, Landry Brewer

Faculty Articles & Research

Maurice Halperin was a University of Oklahoma (OU) professor in the late 1930s and early 1940s when the state’s governor and legislature began actively pursuing Communists in higher education. After Halperin fell under suspicion, he left the university for a job with the federal government’s wartime intelligence agency. Still under a cloud of suspicion, Halperin eventually fled the country, never to return. Shortly after the Cold War ended, evidence emerged verifying the allegations made by his accusers that, during the 1930s, Maurice Halperin was a covert Oklahoma Communist who later betrayed his country by committing espionage for the Soviet Union.

A Community's Buddhist Arts Conservation-Based Voluntourism Management: A New Innovation Arousing Community's Conservational Participation, Pannathat Kalaya, Yuthakan Waiapha, Parnprae Chaoprayoon, Metee Medhasith Suksumret

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The purposes of this study aimed to investigate the level of community participation during Buddhist arts conservation-based voluntourism management, and to predict the most influential activities taken from the Buddhist arts conservation based voluntourism management of which aroused their community participation. The duration of establishing the Buddhist arts conservation-based voluntourism program, which lasted for 7 months, was conducted by the application of participatory action research (PAR) with the AIC techniques. Afterwards, three pilot Buddhist arts conservation-based voluntourism programs were all conducted. Both a questionnaire and an in-depth interview were all carried out for investigating research findings. Data collection was gathered …
