What Collaboration Means To Me: Partnership As Praxis, Rhiannon M. Cates
Collaborative Librarianship
This column offers a reflective and theoretical perspective on the potential of collaboration to function as a tool to resist replicating dynamics of oppression and inequity, and as a strategy to challenge negative aspects of institutional climates and culture in library work.

Cultural Memory In Danger: Sustainable Information, Preservation, And Technology In The Humanities: A Theoretical Approach, Casey D. Hoeve
Collaborative Librarianship
Abstract
Management of library collections is an inherently collaborative process. Spanning multiple generations, materials are selected that support user communities, striving for the optimization of storage and access at the lowest cost.[i] While established partnerships are crucial for the survival of libraries, within any cooperative network, there exist opportunities for divergent practices. Alternative initiatives may have progressive intentions, but competing systems and groups have the potential to disrupt recognized standards and infrastructure, some of which can prove detrimental to information organizations.
Abrupt format changes and technological advancements have altered the way in which materials are currently acquired, accessed, and …

Collaborative Librarianship
Makerspaces present unique possibilities for creative partnerships within libraries, including the opportunity for interdisciplinary use of emerging technologies with archival objects and primary sources. One example of this type of interdisciplinary collaboration is the fabrication of cultural heritage replicas via 3D scanning and printing of historical university objects in academic libraries. Two departments in the University of Idaho Library, Special Collections and Archives (SPEC) and the Making, Innovating, and Learning Laboratory (MILL), partnered on such a project as a way to broaden maker competencies across library departments, leverage interdisciplinary connections between emerging technologies and historic archives, and create innovative outreach …

This manual is a work in progress. It is produced by the Policy Group on Tradeswomen’s Issues (PGTI), a regional collaboration of researchers, government agencies, unions, community-based organizations, developers and contractors committed to increasing access for women and people of color to good paying careers in the construction trades. Our goal is to make our shared efforts and experiences helpful to industry leaders who share our commitment. It is based on best practices developed on major projects that came close, met, or exceeded workforce hiring goals. This manual and additional resources are available online at on the PGTI website at …
The Women Of Guernica: A Compilation Of Interpretations, Heidi Herrera, Dr. Heather Belnap-Jensen
The Women Of Guernica: A Compilation Of Interpretations, Heidi Herrera, Dr. Heather Belnap-Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Although there is a wealth of scholarship on Picasso’s Guernica (1937) (Fig. 1), until recently there has been a distinct lack of analyses completed through feminist methods, an approach essential to a holistic understanding of Guernica. Conducting on-site research at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, I focused on the women of the painting, studying preparatory drawings and works in which Picasso’s representation of women often borders on violent, painting them as monstrous and agonized. The correlation between Picasso’s previous representations of women and Guernica’s harrowing display of women and animals in pain participates within the Spanish artistic tradition in …

Hildegard Von Bingen: A Work Of Virtues, Gina Fowler, Rob Mcfarland
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Researchers seeking historical primary and secondary source documents in a foreign language must often overcome the challenge of finding those resources without actually travelling to their country of origin. The Sophie Digital Library is an online database that was created by BYU faculty to address a very specific aspect of this problem, by gathering and making available works and research specifically related to German-speaking women. Because the Sophie Digital Library enjoys a broad group of users across the world, who rely upon its digital collections, much effort is expended to provide reliable resources and documents related to German-speaking women from …
Digital Analysis Of Norwegian Tourist Journals: Searching For The Ecological Imaginary, Andrew Tate, Dr. Christopher Oscarson
Digital Analysis Of Norwegian Tourist Journals: Searching For The Ecological Imaginary, Andrew Tate, Dr. Christopher Oscarson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I wanted to understand how Norwegians’ perceptions of their own country, particularly with regards to ecology, changed between the years 1868 and 1921. The Norwegian Tourist Association (or Den Norske Turistforening) has been publishing yearbooks since 1868. These publications are packed with articles and poems by various contributors– mostly focused in some way on enjoying nature–along with reports about the organization itself, tourist maps, rules for cabin use, etc.

Understanding Our Early Christian Roots Translating And Publishing A Koine Greek Papyrus, Zakarias Gram, Lincoln H. Blumell
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project was focused on analyzing, transcribing, translating, and publishing an edition of an ancient Greek papyrus housed in Oklahoma City. The experience was both very educating and exciting for me, as I am pursuing a degree in Classics and will continue to work on ancient Greek in graduate school. As such, this was excellent preparation for my future career and will be extremely valuable for graduate school applications.
Orthodoxy And Temple Ritual, Nathan Astel, Michael Mackay
Orthodoxy And Temple Ritual, Nathan Astel, Michael Mackay
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My research was initially aimed at researching the locations and implementation of the temple endowment in Nauvoo. As I began my research concerning the temple endowment, I realized that I was more interested in the theological implications of the endowment and how the endowment ritual has been interpreted in the past. So, I decided to modify my research in order to follow a more interesting and fruitful area of research

Due to advances in medical knowledge the population of older adults struggling with issues of aging like Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and stroke is growing. There is a need for therapeutic interventions to provide adaptive strategies to sustain quality of life, decrease neurologic impairment, and maintain or slow cognitive decline and function due to degenerative neurologic diseases. Musical interventions with adults with cognitive impairments have received increased attention over the past few years, such as the value of personalized music listening in the iPod project for AD; music as a tool to decrease agitation and anxiety in dementia; …

Sea Squad, Liam Geary Baulch
Sea Squad, Liam Geary Baulch
The Goose
The Sea Squad is a band of cheerleaders against climate change. Taking action as a team in formation, they gather momentum, inviting all people to cheer with them, mimicking the infinitely expandable nature of the seas' molecular structure. The work was developed and performed as a bilingual project at Est-Nord-Est in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, Canada, and has since been performed and exhibited internationally. The following poems are some of the chants that Sea Squad use to get a crowd cheering together against climate change.

The Herculaneum Papyri: A Paleographic Approach To The Latin Library, Jordan Rawlings, Roger Macfarlane
The Herculaneum Papyri: A Paleographic Approach To The Latin Library, Jordan Rawlings, Roger Macfarlane
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the 1750’s AD, military engineers commissioned by the Bourbon rulers found many black, chalky chunks while excavating an underground Roman villa. Initially these lumps were thought to be coal or other detritus and were thus handled with little care. Later, some workers noticed that these black lumps were manmade and actually preserved traces of writing. Early attempts at deciphering and unrolling these papyri scrolls proved unfruitful and resulted in the destruction of many papyri. Eventually a meticulous approach applied by Antonio Piaggio, an experienced ancient manuscript and document worker, proved successful. Although it preserved the papyri, Piaggio’s method worked …
Painted Ladies Of Rome: The Role Of Beauty In Defining Female Excellence, Casandra Ball, Michael Pope
Painted Ladies Of Rome: The Role Of Beauty In Defining Female Excellence, Casandra Ball, Michael Pope
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Ancient Rome was a culture obsessed with excellence, and much scholarly ink has been spent identifying and elucidating the intricate matrix of ideal Roman masculinity. Meanwhile, relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to the concept of feminine excellence, or the means by which Roman women attained social or personal value. The purpose of this project was to examine the position of Roman women within greater Roman society, and to identify the standards used to typify ideal Roman womanhood. I posited that adherence to rigid beauty standards was a significant means by which Roman women could contribute symbolic and tangible …

For the past several decades, audio guides, frequently referred to as handheld guides, have become expected aids to the museum visitor’s enjoyment and understanding of the museum experience. At one time such devices were available only in major institutions, but now even smaller, less visited museums and historic sites regularly offer a handheld audio experience for their visitors. The approach to the development of audio guides and their content has altered substantially as our understanding of the museum visitor’s experience has changed. Advances in technology have enabled a range of technical possibilities that may enhance the visitor’s experience by, for …
