Martin is a stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad at the east portal of its tunnel under Stampede Pass, going through the Cascade Mountains, named for the nearby Martin Creek. Since the 1920s, Northwest skiers took the Northern Pacific Railroad to Martin to take advantage of the deep snow that fell there. The story of skiing at Martin is virtually unknown these days, and Martin is one of the Lost Ski Areas of Washington.

This dissertation is an interdisciplinary exploration of Highway 66 heritage in order to understand what makes the historic American route distinctive in the contemporary capitalist scenario. Although deterioration of the road is evident, it continues to epitomize an historic American infrastructure as well as a fascinating conceptualization of the United States in the American imagination and in the international consciousness. Historical evidence indicates that the formation of Highway 66 largely depended on a conjuncture of political, cultural, and socio-economic factors under capitalism and institutional forces and ideological principles of Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism. In this capstone project, I advocate for adding makerspaces to art museum education programming. I review the foundational educational concepts of a makerspace which help explain why it is a modern strategy to increasing visitor learning. This includes John Dewey’s theories of experience and education, Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory, George Hein’s studies of museum visitor behavior, and the physiological science of learning. I then propose four key terms essential for visitor learning, and explain how makerspaces successfully incorporate them. In 2001 the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) published The AAM Guide to Provenance Research. However, in the past seventeen years there have been several new developments in the provenanceresearchfield, and an updated guide has yet to be released. I propose that several changes be made to create an updated version. For this project, I tested this guide in two ways: first, to see how our understanding of provenance has changed since 2001 and second, to use a case study to assess whether the recommended basic research guide and principles still apply to today.

This thesis focuses on the fashion plates in Godey’s Lady’s Book and the way the publisher of Godey’s, Louis Godey, and the editor, Sarah Hale, engaged with the fashion plates. The format of Godey’s combined fashion plates, domestic advice, and literature; it defined the genre of women’s magazines for almost half a century. Godey’s Lady’s Book was established by Louis Godey in 1830. In 1837 he hired Sarah Hale as literary editor. This partnership lasted for forty years until they both retired from the magazine in 1877. Throughout the forty years Louis Godey and Sarah Hale worked together, the fashion …

Barthélemy Trille Labarre (1758–1797) was a French guitarist and composer active at the end of the eighteenth century, when the five-course guitar was still the instrument of choice for many French guitarists. Trille Labarre's Nouvelle méthode pour la guitare, Op. 7, is impressive in its scope and its attention to detail, in comparison to other methods of the eighteenth century, but copies of it are extremely rare. Many of Trille Labarre’s other works also have survived in few or unique copies.

While Trille Labarre may be mentioned briefly in later biographical dictionaries, he is totally absent from most of …

In “Unsettling Geographies: Primitivist Utopias in Queer American Literature from Walt Whitman to Willa Cather,” I argue that the colonial discourse of primitivism played a central role in the queer literary imaginaries of both canonical and non-canonical U.S. authors. Building on the work of historians of sexuality who trace the complex development of the twentieth-century homo-/hetero- binary, I show how literary works produced in this historical moment—roughly 1860 to 1925—explored and in some instances even advocated alternative queer modes of citizenship and erotic imagination and practice.
