Claude Debussy's Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune [Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun] opens with an unaccompanied flute solo that famously tests breath control, tone production, and capacity for musical expression. All aspiring flutists must master this solo, because it is frequently requested on orchestral and collegiate auditions. To aid flutists in their preparation, many notable pedagogues and performers have provided written and verbal commentary with suggestions for crafting a successful performance; however, it is unclear whether or not actual performances reflect these teachings. Agustin Barrios's guitar music has become increasingly popular over the last forty years. After his death, a revival of interest in his compositions began in the 1970s, motivated by a series of publications and recordings of his music by important guitar performers at that time. The most important of these recordings came from the Australian guitar performer John Williams, who was interviewed in 1976 by ABC Television Australia for a film about the Paraguayan composer. The next year, Williams recorded a collection of fifteen works in his album John Williams-Barrios: John Williams Plays the Music of Agustín Barrios Mangoré. …

In this dissertation, I analyzed Max Neuhaus’s (1939-2009) and R. Murray Schafer’s (b. 1932) commentary and work regarding noise, its control, and its relationship with the environment from the 1960 to the 1980s. Both Neuhaus and Schafer as well as those more directly involved with noise abatement research and policy were responding to the challenges and possibilities that noise posed in the latter twentieth century. In this project, I delved into these substantial links and argued that responding to and engaging with noise abatement policies was a key impetus to much of their work, which scholarship has yet to critically …

Since 2004, the body of literature dedicated to information literacy in music has expanded, reflecting themes of definitions and standards of information literacy, the role of information literacy in accreditation and assessment, instructional relationships with faculty and students, and online instruction. In addition, the literature also explored themes of information ethics, embedded librarians, unconventional instructional modes, and the implications of user behavior for information literacy. This literature review and selected bibliography traces these themes across 57 writings, published or in-press, highlighting potential application of some of the ideas in these writings as well as potential for further exploration.

This dissertation compares the improvisational style of notable tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III when performing a jazz standard, as well as an original composition. As with other contemporary artists, there is little to no pre-existing literature discussing Smith despite his frequent collaboration with jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard, Eric Harland, Roy Haynes, Jason Moran, and Christian McBride, as well as contemporaries Christian Scott, Ambrose Akinmusire and Kendrick Scott. The music of Wayne Shorter is renowned for its harmonic complexity, mainly due to Shorter’s application of “conventional jazz compositional ideas… in unconventional ways” (Ritchie, 2008, p. 15). While Shorter’s melodies are often based on a pentatonic scale and relatively simple and lyrical such as in “Deluge” from the album Juju (Shorter, 1964a) and “Oriental Folk Song” from Night Dreamer (Shorter, 1964b), the accompanying harmony he writes is often complex and unusual. Traditionally, men have dominated jazz music in terms of participation and professional acknowledgement, but even in present times, female instrumentalists remain under-represented in jazz performance and education. Various studies such as Kathleen M. McKeage’s Gender and Participation in Undergraduate Jazz Ensembles: A National Survey and Erin L. Wehr’s Understanding the Experiences of Women in Jazz: A Suggested Model, have produced statistics that illustrate the low participation of female instrumentalists in jazz, and have also provided social-psychological theories to explain why these patterns continue to prevail.

Despite their enduring popularity as concert works, Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies have never won favour with the critics. Played in a literal, score-bound fashion these works can indeed offer little more than fodder for the performing pony. Nevertheless, through performances that successfully capture the spirit of this music—many of which are captured on early recordings—these works are vibrant, powerful, and stirring.

This dissertation examines the manner in which postminimalist compositional techniques such as phasing, polymeter, etc., can be used to aid the creation of music for dance. Music presented with dance generally serves at least two crucial roles: providing the dancers with a framework and impetus to aid movement; and reflecting the concept and meaning, where applicable, of the choreography. Cook, Prichard, Spivak, and Berns (2018) find that dogs’ levels of trait aggression are positively correlated with their amygdala activation when observing their caregivers giving a food to a fake dog. The authors conclude that this may provide neural evidence in dogs for the experience of jealousy, an emotion that some psychologists consider to be unique to humans. Here we explain the difference between the emotions of jealousy and envy, suggesting some ideas for future experiments that may help disentangle the experience of jealousy from that of envy in dogs. This thesis examines the career of the Australian guitarist John Williams and his impact upon the culture of the classical guitar. Williams has been a celebrated guitarist for more than six decades and has performed and recorded extensively during that period. He has made a remarkably varied contribution to guitar culture, performing in a wide variety of different styles, highlighting the guitar’s unique strength as a versatile and adaptable instrument. 文字是文化的載體，也負著文化承傳的責任。透過文字研究，人們能夠了解古代社會發展的面貌。自古以來，水與人類的生活息息相關，也對古代文明產生重要影響。因此，古人創造了不少與水有關的文字用作日常生活的記錄。這些文字可反映古人和水之間的互動，並能呈現中國古代社會的面貌。本文以東漢許慎（58－147）所編的《說文解字》水部字例為研究對象，透過研究字義並引用相關史料及文獻作佐證，了解中國古代人類對水的認知，以及水對古代社會及文化發展的影響。

本文會先分析《說文解字》水部字的構字方式，並以其字義作分類整理。然後會從《說文解字》水部選取部份字例，解釋它們在《說文解字》中所記錄的字義，並以相關的文獻資料作補充，從中了解水與中國古代社會的關係。本文會就三個主題作分析和討論，以了解水對人類古代社會發展與生活的重要性。第一、古人對地理面貌的掌握和了解，以及水利工程的興建。第二、水在古代經濟活動如農業、紡織業等所發揮的功用。第三、古代人如何使用水去改善生活及所產生的文化意義。

漢人許慎所著的《說文解字》為中國現存最早亦最完整的字書，許慎以「六書」、「省形」、「省聲」、「亦聲字」等概念為九千多個漢字的形音義作解析，其中「省形字」與「省聲字」並稱為「省變字」。從清代以來研究省聲字的學者很多，亦因而衍生出不少學說及理論，但對於省形字的分析卻未有跟上這樣的步伐，更有學者全面地否認省形字的存在 ，但大多的學者對於省形字都抱有肯定卻存疑的態度。大多數的學者對省形字的研究都環繞著將省形字重新歸納入「六書」中，但對於省形字所擁有的系統性及科學性卻沒有一個完整的說明，本文將就《說文解字》中「省形」說的系統作一淺述，包括省形字的內部系統和外部系統以及省形字出現的原因，以此來說明「省形說」的客觀性。

中國人對「鬼」字一般比較忌諱，但廣東話中，「鬼」字的用法卻多不勝數，除了有豐富的與「鬼」字搭配而成的俗語和詞彙外，在日常的口語中，「鬼」字的使用也十分普遍。在香港，「鬼」字的使用好像是一種語言習慣，不少香港人在說話時都會不自覺地在句子中加上「鬼」字。其中，有一些「鬼」字的用法更是廣東話獨有的，極具特色。因此，本文將會從「鬼」的基本義入手，進而分析「鬼」字在廣東話中的詞類轉變，以及「鬼」字在不同句子中的語法特色。

本文將集中討論「鬼」字在口語句子中的使用情況。本文會以詞類作為劃分，從名詞、副詞和助詞，羅列出「鬼」字會出現在香港粵語中那些句子結構，並從中分析「鬼」字的語法意義和功能，以及探討「鬼」字在不同詞類之間的關係。為確保所討論的「鬼」字用法是常見於香港的新聞和日常的溝通中，本文討論「鬼」字在不同的句子結構時，會附以多條相應的例句供參考，語料的來源主要是本地報章的報導內文的句子，也有少部分源自日常生活中的口頭例句。

成語大多起源於古代，是構成漢語詞彙體系中重要的一環。至今，我們還經常利用他們來行文造句。雖然大部分成語只是由四字形式，但其結構凝固、文字精煉、概括性強的獨特性，使成語具備歷久不衰的生命力。

相信不少人對成語的今義都很熟悉，但對於個別成語的出處、本義、甚至其語義的演變過程及原因，很多人只是一知半解。故此，本文以《詩經》成語的演變為題目，從歷時性的角度探析成語從雛形發展至今的意義轉變，全面地掌握成語的意義，有助我們更恰當地運用成語。

《詩經》是中國文學發展史上最早出現的詩集。從內容的角度來看，詩歌題材豐富，從各方面反映周代社會的生活面貌。從語言的角度來看，詩歌文字精煉優美，表現出上古詩歌活潑生動的一面。在漢語詞彙系統中，不少成語就是源自《詩經》，故此本文將以《詩經》為研究對象。

任何一種語言的發展都有其背後的原因，因此本文也會嘗試分析成語意義的演變與社會、心理、和語言自身的關係。

被神化的異僧 : 從《濟公全傳》分析濟公形象及其背後意蘊, Wan Ting Wong

濟公是中國家傳戶曉的人物，說起濟公，大多人的第一印象都是瘋瘋癲癲的。他衣著破舊、行為反常、酒肉不離身，是一個不守佛門戒律的和尚。然而，這位不受佛門認可的和尚卻在凡間混得如魚得水，不少高官顯貴都尊稱他一聲「聖僧」，而百姓更是視他如「活佛」。濟公看似是一個普通的和尚，但他卻擁有神通、仙藥，破爛的衣衫是降魔伏妖的神器。濟公身上充滿神秘色彩，亦具有極大的研究空間。本文以清代郭小亭《濟公全傳》（全稱《評演濟公傳》）為研究重心，分析濟公在作品中的不同形象，及與社會、佛教的關係。

本論文主要分為四部分：第一章為導言。第二章分析濟公的文本形象及其表達的社會意義，當中他的形象將會以丐、俠、藥、癲、聖五方面逐一剖析。第三章闡釋濟公和傳統佛教、民間宗教的關係。第四章則為全文總結。
