Previous research on adjunct control [4, 7, 12, 13] classifies it as Obligatory Control (OC) due to facts such as the following: the matrix subject can control PRO, but the object cannot (1), and only a sloppy interpretation is available under ellipsis (2). With examples such as (3), however, it has been demonstrated that this is not always the case [10, 18]. Here, PRO may refer to an entity not represented syntactically in the sentence, so these must be instances of Non-Obligatory Control (NOC). Landau [10] argues that NOC of right-adjoined adjuncts is only available under two conditions: the adjunct …

Projects that set out to create a linguistic resource often do so by using a machine learning model that pre-annotates or filters the content that goes through to a human annotator, before going into the final version of the resource. However, available budgets are often limited, and the amount of data that is available exceeds the amount of annotation that can be done. Thus, in order to optimize the benefit from the invested human work, we argue that the decision on which predictive model one should employ depends not only on generalized evaluation metrics, such as accuracy and F-score, but …

The increasingly common use of English nursery rhymes intertextually has impacted upon their transfer into target cultures: entire nursery rhymes, fragments and characters are now found in translational situations. Most of these situations are adaptations of nursery rhymes into other media; and one of the most evident is the use of nursery rhyme characters found in a different context, frequently portrayed visually. Through a reception case study with Spanish students, this report intends to address issues about the relevance of intertextuality in translation, as well as the child’s assumptions in relation to discourse and visual input. This article aims to investigate the application of folktales for cultural tourism management and the role and importance of this folklore data for tourism management in the Central Isan Provinces of Thailand, i.e. Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham and Roi Et. The key concepts used in this study include creative economy, creative folklore, cultural tourism and identity. The study revealed that most folktales used in tourism management were tales and local myths such as fairy tales, legends of the city, local tales and legends of heroes in the provinces. In recent decades, the internet has become our predominant public space and yet the role of art in this space remains largely unthought. This paper argues that graphic art, and in particular digital graphic art, has great power to shape and transform our thinking and experience. But with that power comes an enormous political and ethical responsibility, a responsibility too often ignored by programmers and computer scientists. This paper uses the work of Denis Schmidt and Jacques Taminiaux as important resources for developing a Heideggerian response to this lack.

Music In The Northern Woods: An Archaeological Exploration Of Musical Instrument Remains, Matthew Durocher

Archaeological and historical literature neglects music and sound. The quantity and distribution of musical remains found during archaeological excavations at Coalwood, a Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI) logging camp active from 1901-1912 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, addresses the importance of music to the people that lived there. Musical reed plates from harmonicas, concertinas, and accordions were recovered and examined. These musical remains have traditionally been ignored as a diagnostic artifact, but here, I use them as primary evidence to access the daily lives of people in the northern woods. To do this, I will present how CCI developed Coalwood …

The United States is conspicuously lacking in a large-scale government subsidy program for the arts and has never established a National Theatre. This makes us unique among most developed nations in the world as well as among many developing countries that established national theatres early in their burgeoning histories, and it begs the question: why has government support of the cultural life of the nation never been a priority in the U.S.? “I’Ll Come Back And Break Your Spell”: Narrative Freedom And Genre In The Haunting Of Hill House, Hilarie Ashton

In The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson interplays repression and fear inside a “normal” world, reshaping the modern Gothic novel. In this article, I trace key moments in the text where the perceptions of her complicated protagonist, Eleanor Vance, appear without the mediation of the narrator, via verb tenses, punctuation/formatting choices, and quotation. Many of these moments, I argue, occur in narrative spaces that are more quotidian than Gothic (some not even chilling at all). With the periodic narrative freedom, which I call bare thoughts, this recalibrates the division between imaginary and reality while opening up possibilities for …

A Critical Examination Of Understanding’S Characteristics: Why, In A Sense, Understanding Is Unique, Christopher Becker

Is understanding a unique kind of epistemic state or simply another word for knowledge? Recently, there is a dispute in the literature between those, non-reductionists, who argue that we cannot reduce understanding to knowledge. Sliwa and Khalifa, two reductionists, on the other hand, argue that understanding is basically just another word for knowledge (if we are fairly comparing the two). After considering the dialectic between non-reductionists and reductionists, undogmatically, I argue that Sliwa's arguments in favor of reductionism fail. Sliwa's analytical argument in defense of reductionism is unsuccessful because a special kind of understanding, subjective understanding, can be independent of …

Too Intimate To Speak : Regional Cinemas And Literatures, Victor Fan

In this essay, I look back at a moment in Chinese literature and cinema, the 1930s and 1940s, when writers, filmmakers, and critics were driven by a series of political crises to conceptualize the relationship between “mother language” and “national language” from a very different perspective than Song’s. I do so by scrutinizing film and literary criticisms from this period. A national language, literature, and cinema are not static, unified, and internally coherent entities that naturally subsume their regional counterparts under them. In this essay, I take a close look at three of Jia’s films that have prominently engaged the topic of home in relation to place, identity, and nation: Still Life 三峽好人 (2006), 24 City 24城記 (2008), and A Touch of Sin 天註定 (2013). Set at the turn of the twenty-first century, these films employ various modes of representation concerning the reality of space. 論古代女性形象和地位 : 以《說文解字》女部形容詞為研究中心, Lai Him Po

一個國家的文字往往反映其獨特的思想文化，漢代許慎的《說文解字》作為中國歷史上第一部有系統地考證字源的字書，當中對每個字的解釋都蘊藏了深刻的中國文化。本文以《說文解字》中的「女部」形容詞作為研究範圍。希望透過分析許慎為這些字所下的定義，配合歷史古籍，窺探古代女性的形象和地位，並嘗試探討背後的中國傳統文化思想。本文首先將《說文》「女部」可作為形容詞的字分為褒義及貶義，然後再按意義類別編排分類，其中褒義分為六大類，貶義分為五大類。由於《說文》「女部」中可以用來形容不同事物的字眾多，故本文只會抽取一部份來進行研究，詳細字義分類及解釋可參考附錄。

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการวิจัยดนตรีพิณตามแนวคิดพุทธศาสนาจากธรรมะเรื่องทางสายกลาง เพื่อนำไปสู่การสร้างสรรค์ทางดุริยางคศิลป์ไทย โดยค้นคว้าจากพระไตรปิฎกและหลักฐานต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งการสัมภาษณ์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านหลักธรรม ดนตรีและการสร้างสรรค์ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า หลักธรรมทางสายกลาง "ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา" นั้น ปรากฏการใช้คุณสมบัติดนตรี "พิณ" เป็นสื่อในการอธิบายธรรมะ โดยข้อมูลดนตรีพิณสื่อถึง 3 นัยคือ (1) พิณในทางพุทธศาสนาจัดเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งการก่อให้เกิดปัญญา (2) พิณในทางความเชื่อจัดเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งเทพคนธรรพ์ (3) พิณในทางดนตรีเป็นลักษณะที่แสดงถึงคุณค่า ความงาม ความไพเราะ เอกสารและหลักฐานต่าง ๆ พบว่า เครื่องดนตรีพิณ "กระจับปี่" จัดอยู่ในประเภทพิณคอยาวเรียกชื่อตามแบบพิณลิวท์ที่ปรากฏในยุคหลังพระเวท ส่วนข้อมูลดนตรีพิณในพระไตรปิฎกพบว่า (1) ด้านความหมาย พิณมีนัยแห่งหลักธรรมโดยอุปมาจากสายและเสียงของพิณ (2) ด้านลักษณะพิณ ปรากฏรูปแบบฮาร์ป ลิวท์และโบว์ (3) ด้านบทบาทหน้าที่พบว่าพิณเป็นเครื่องทำทำนองและเครื่องทำเสียงโดรน ใช้ประกอบการขับร้อง ผลงานการประพันธ์เพลงในครั้งนี้เป็นเพลงตับเรื่องแบ่งทำนองออกเป็น 3 ส่วนคือ พุทธคุณ ธรรมคุณและสังฆคุณ โดยใช้กลวิธีการประพันธ์ตามขนบด้วยทำนองต้นรากที่มาจากบทสวดบาลีและฉันท์ในคัมภีร์วุตโตทัย อันมีความหมายสอดคล้องกับเรื่องราวทางสายกลาง รวมทั้งการใช้แนวคิดเสียงโดรน การประสานเสียงแนวนอน การใช้คำร้องบาลี การประพันธ์หน้าทับใหม่ ตลอดจนการสอดแทรกและรักษานัยแห่งหลักธรรมของทำนองต้นรากอย่างเคร่งครัด อันเป็นลักษณะพิเศษที่ปรากฏในผลงานสร้างสรรค์ครั้งนี้
