The use of mindfulness-based interventions in health, education, and psychology have dramatically increased in the last two decades. Art, as a reflection of the internal and external processes, is one of the key features of humanity. However, art as a mindfulness-based intervention remains underrepresented and under-researched in the mindfulness literature. This is surprising given the role of art across culture, religion, and philosophy. Art is used to explore concepts of self and self-refection, as well as to train attention and awareness. Art is also used to explore relationships and engage in meaning-making. There is little evidence of why art was …

ละครซ้อนละคร (play-within-a-play) เป็นกลวิธีการประพันธ์ที่ปรากฎในบทละครสันสกฤตเรื่องปริยทรรศิกา (Priyadrska) และพาลรามายณะ (Balaramayana) นักวรรณคดีสันสกฤตจำกัดความละครซ้อนในละครสันสกฤตแตกต่างกัน วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มุ่งศึกษาลักษณะเฉพาะของละครซ้อนละคนในละครสันสกฤตทั้งสองเรื่อง พร้อมทั้งศึกษาบทบาทและความสำคัญที่ละครซ้อนแต่ละเรื่องมีต่อละครเรื่องหลัก ผลการศึกษาพบว่า มีคำอธิบาย "ละครซ้อนละคร" ในทฤษฎีการละครสันสกฤตเรื่อง สาหิตยทรรปณะ (Sahityadarpana) เรียกว่า ครรภางกะ (garbhanka) คือ ละครเล็กที่แทรกอยู่ในละครใหญ่อีกเรื่องหนึ่ง มีบทเกริ่นนำ เนื่อเรื่อง และตอนจบของตนเอง จากนิยายดังกล่าวนำมาวิเคราะห์ละครซ้อนละครในปริยทรรศิกาและพาลรามายณะ ได้ผลว่า ละครทั้งสองเรื่องมีบทเกริ่นนำของตนเอง เรื่องปริทรรศิกามีนายโรงแนะนำละครซ้อนชื่อ "อุทัยนจริต" (Udayanacarita) เนื้อเรื่องแสดงความรักระหว่างพระเจ้าอุทัยน์ (วัตสราช) กับเทวีวาสวทัตตา แต่พระเจ้าอุทัยน์ที่ปลอมตนมาเล่นละครเป็นตนเองพลอดรักกับนางเอกจนเทวีวาสวทัตตาไม่อาจทนดูละครต่อได้จึ่งสั่งให้หยุดเล่น ละคนซ้อนเรื่องนี้จึ่งไม่มีตอนจบ ส่วนละครซ้อนละครในพาลรามายณะ ชื่อว่า "สีตาสวยัมวระ" (Sitasvayamvara) การเลือกคู่ของนางสีดา มีบทเกริ่นนำ เนื้อเรื่องเป็นการประลองยกธนูพระศิวะ พระรามสามารถยกได้พร้อมหักธนูและจัดพิธีอภิเษกสมรส ในเรื่องนี้มีบทอวยพรตอนจบเรื่อง ซึ่งสอดคล้องตามคำอธิบายในสาหิตยทรรปณะ บทบาทและความสำคัญของละครซ้อนต่อละครเรื่องหลัก ในบริบทของการพัฒนาปมเรื่อง ทำให้เรื่องเข้มข้นขึ้น ส่วนในบริบทการพัฒนารสและภาวะ ละครซ้อนเสริมให้ผู้ชมรับรู้รสซ้อนกัน แบ่งเป็นสองขั้น คือ รสของผู้ชมในละคร (ตัวละครที่เล่นเป็นผู้ชม) และรสของผู้ชมภายนอก (ผู้ชมจริง)

Summers discusses Buganda's 1941 Nnamasole crisis following the Christian marriage of Irene Namaganda, Buganda's queen mother who was pregnant with her slightly older lover. Namaganda's Christian marriage was powerfully scandalous, profoundly violating expectations associated with marriage and royal office. The scandal produced a political crisis that toppled Buganda's prime minister, pushed his senior allies from power, deposed the queen mother, exiled her husband, and changed Buganda's political landscape. The scandal launched a new era of public mobilization and protest that took Buganda's politics beyond the realm of deals between the oligarchy and British elites, and into public gossip, newspapers and …

Pocahontas Looks Back And Then Looks Elsewhere: The Entangled Gaze In Contemporary Indigenous Art, Monika Siebert

In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, various genres of visual art in North America feature Indigenous subjects looking from the canvas or the screen at the viewers to interpellate them as implicated in the gaze framing the artwork. In this article, I provide an historical genealogy of this returned gaze, starting with Simon van de Passe’s 1616 engraving, Matoaka als Lady Rebecca. I show how subsequent depictions of Pocahontas depart from the reciprocal gaze of de Passe’s portrait and how contemporary art returns to this theme of the returned gaze, using Shelley Niro’s video work The Shirt (2003) …

The imbrication of issues of nation, class, gender, and religion necessitates a critical revision of the so-called secular postcolonial modernity embraced by Indian nationalists, including musicologists. The life and struggle of Roshan Ara Begum—Pakistan's first and, to date, arguably greatest singer of classical music—is an instructive example of the complex intertwining of agency, resistance, and resignation in Muslim-identified Pakistan and Hindu-identified India.

Health disparities have mostly affected African Americans who are poor, uninsured, under insured and unemployed. This population of African Americans seek spiritual solace and social counseling from their pastors, and church-based health promotion (CBHP) offers the opportunity to reach millions of the U. S. Black population. The lack of studies on female African American pastors implementing congregational health promotion activities influenced this study. This qualitative study helped in understanding the experiences, perspectives, and influences of 13 female African American Christian pastors on health-related issues within their congregation. Employee engagement is a significant problem for leaders in most organizations today. Though many reasons are given for the growing number of disengaged employees, little is understood about what role spirituality in the workplace may play into employee engagement. Humanocracy theory guided the study on three aspects of workplace spirituality, employee engagement, and meaningfulness of work. An online survey combining elements of a Spiritual Well-being Scale, the Work and Meaning Inventory, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale was administered to 325 human resource managers. Researchers have found that African American men are one of the most marginalized, targeted, and disenfranchised groups of people. In the past, African American men were less likely to attend psychotherapy compared to other ethnicities. Barriers to treatment includes the following: distrust in the mental health system, self-reliant behaviors, religious ideologies, cultural stigmas, and the ideology of what it means to be a man and an African American man in America. Cross-National Variation In The Social Origins And Religious Consequences Of Religious Non-Affiliation, Philip Schwadel

I argue that the social implications of religious non-affiliation vary across cultural contexts, leading to differences across nations in both who is likely to be unaffiliated and the religious consequences of such non-affiliation. I test these propositions by examining cross-national variation in associations with non-affiliation using multilevel models and cross-sectional survey data from almost 70,000 respondents in 52 nations. The results indicate that: 1) both individual characteristics (gender, age, and marital status) and nation-level attributes (GDP, communism, and regulation of religion) strongly predict religious non-affiliation; 2) differences in non-affiliation by individual-level attributes—women vs. men, old vs. young, and married vs. …

Arguments for fish sentience have difficulty with the philosophical zombie problem. Progress in AI has shown that complex learning, pain behavior, and pain as a motivational drive can be emulated by robots without any internal subjective experience. Therefore, demonstrating these abilities in fish does not necessarily demonstrate that fish are sentient. Further evidence for fish sentience may come from optogenetic studies of neural networks in zebrafish. Such studies may show that zebrafish have neural network patterns similar to those that correlate with sentience in humans. This research examines Thomas Jefferson’s original draft of the Declaration of Independence. Ostensibly written for the simple purpose of justifying the American separation from Great Britain, the Declaration nevertheless utilizes persuasive techniques and narrative themes that are not necessary to the rhetorical goal of justification. Of particular interest is Jefferson’s curious choice to base his argument for independence around the theme of enslavement. In order to uncover Jefferson’s possible reasons for doing so, the original draft of the Declaration is examined using a combination of three methods of rhetorical criticism: analysis of the rhetorical situation, close textual analysis, and Dramatistic …

This article describes those county histories and the people who wrote them, and it concludes that these books "tell us as much about the historians (and their audiences) as about the past they described."
