Whether humans alone experience complex emotions like jealousy or envy remains hotly debated, partly because of the difficulty of measuring them without a verbal report. Cook, Berns and colleagues use functional brain imaging to identify in dogs neural responses very similar to those evoked by jealousy in humans. When dogs see their caregiver reward a facsimile dog, their amygdala is activated and the strength of this response predicts aggressive behavior — just as jealousy leads to aggression in humans. Emotions are difficult to assess, even in humans. The attribution of jealousy in an animal like a dog is especially difficult because performance of a particular behavior in the context of another animal receiving a reward may not be easily distinguishable from intra-species competition or simply a response to a contextual cue for the availability of reward. The authors provide distinguishing evidence in the form of fMRI data to show that in the presence of a “fake” dog being fed, there is bilateral activation in the amygdala, an area associated with anxiety, anger, fear, and even jealousy in humans.

Pianist Lennie Tristano is regarded as one of the most original voices in jazz history. His uncompromising adherence to artistic ideals led to both great innovation and obscurity, limiting his impact on future generations of musicians. Until recently, his music has been largely overlooked by musicians and academics alike. Coinciding with a revival in interest in Tristano and his music by modern jazz musicians, this dissertation seeks to investigate the transferability of several aspects of Tristano’s rhythmic, harmonic and phrasing vocabulary to modern jazz improvisation. Nate Wood is a highly acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who pushes the boundaries of drumming in a contemporary jazz setting. Wood is well known for his playing with Tigran Hamasyan, Wayne Krantz Trio and Kneebody. This study focused on the orchestration approach of Wood within the context of Tigran Hamasyan’s original compositions. Wood’s drumming was analysed through transcription and interview to further gain insight into his drumming concepts.

These findings contribute to knowledge on contemporary jazz drumming and specifically Wood’s playing, which has not been the topic of a research paper before. Analysis of Wood’s drum parts and improvisation within drumming frameworks …

This work explores the contradictions contained in the French ideals of democracy and their application to blacks in Africa and the French Caribbean. From the philosophical eruptions of French democratic ideals during the 18th century through the flux and reflux between Republican aspirations and monarchy during the 19th century that followed the proclamation of the Rights of Man of 1789 and the subsequent enshrinement of the Republic, France’s concomitant dehumanization of Blacks through the practice of slavery and colonialism has been a matter of hypocrisy. Through a hermeneutic approach, I interpreted Leslie Greenberg’s Emotion-focused therapy: Coaching clients to work through their feelings (2^nd ed), a popular and widely used theory in psychotherapy. As a practitioner with humanistic foundations, this was also an opportunity for the author to understand his own unexamined values as a therapist. When speaking their heritage language, heritage speakers typically sound much like other “native speakers.” However, recent studies have found that heritage speakers (HSs) are highly variable and produce a range of more and less “native-like” phonetic features. In an effort to stimulate productive new research in this area, this article addresses some of the methodological challenges of heritage language phonetics research, namely dealing with high variability and identifying the best predictors of that variability. In 1950s, two fourteenth-century tombstones with Latin inscriptions were discovered in Yangzhou, China. Both tombstones were made for an Italian merchant family. The tombstones bear Christian iconography such as the Last Judgment, the Virgin and Child and the martyrdom of St. Catherine of Alexandria, while non-western details are represented as well, including the Mongol garments, Chinese furniture and Islamic and Nestorian gravestones. My research considers the dynamic matrices of various religious and ethnic groups, which concomitantly arrived in Yuan China under an overarching control of the Mongol Empire. This paper focuses on contemporary South African photographer Zanele Muholi’s (b. 1972) extensive photographic archival project, Faces and Phases, which documents South Africa’s black queer community. The series exists not only as a book published in 2014, but as an exhibition that has been shown globally. In the introduction to their book of the Faces and Phases series Muholi states their goal as “[articulating] the collective pain [black lesbians] as a community experience” (emphasis mine). The purpose of this research project is to investigate the relationship between biographical films and the context in which they were produced through a focus on media representation of Frederic Chopin. This project traces the evolution of the Islamic Deobandi madrassas from their creation during the British colonial period in India to present day Pakistan and Afghanistan. The goal is to argue that these madrassas turned to militancy due to regional political factors. This is done by examining the madrassas in three periods; the British colonial period, the Soviet-Afghan War period, and the years when the Taliban were in power in Afghanistan. The study of sex work in late nineteenth-century Paris provides an illustration of the political upheaval of the Commune, as well as its continuing acceptance of the bourgeois moralism that linked sex work to moral and political corruption. I will study the cases of several Communardes who were directly or indirectly affected by the rhetoric of sex work and sexual immorality because of their involvement in the Commune.
