In this project I analyze the representation of women in high school American history curriculum. with a specials focus on Illinois in particular where this research was completed. While the study of history has evolved greatly, especially in an educational climate that has recently been questioning the best practices to have students successfully engage with the practice and study of history, a gaping whole remains: the representation of women. Women have become a more fundamental part of history at collegiate levels with gender and social history increasing in importance but our high school students are missing out on a history …

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone
The image of the Crucifixion of Jesus in the Book of Hours provides visual context for remembrance of the Octave of Easter in the liturgical calendar, and it is also the basis for the Passion of Jesus. This essay discusses the Biblical context, characters, and symbols included in the illustration of the Crucifixion in Thielman Kerver's 1507 printing.

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone
Portland State University’s Kerver Book of Hours contains typological images in sets of three. Typological images are more commonly displayed in sets of two consisting of a type and an antitype. Typological thought uses images from the Hebrew Bible placed alongside the images of the New Testament in order to act as a prophecy.By viewing the Hebrew Bible as a prophecy for the New Testament, the church is able to justify the existence of the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew Bible must be preserved in order for it to be interpreted, and the Book of Hours was used as a tool …

Through the use of primary source documents, especially deeds, wills, estate inventories, and historic newspapers, this report attempts to trace the lives of the original group of enslaved men,
women, and children who lived at the Davenport House, including Nancy, Bella, Mary, Deeping, Tom, Ned, Ann, Davy, Isaac, Jacob, Jack, Polly, and Peggy prior to their entry into the Davenport House. There is much to be interpreted from seemingly impersonal information such as location and previous owners, as well as from new resources heretofore unconsulted including burial and jail records, ship manifests, later deed records, and wills. This article provides an overview of the changing role of the library in scholarly publishing and the rising phenomenon of library-press collaboration. It examines, through a literature review and two case studies, how and why the library has taken on this new role in scholarly publishing and created partnerships with university presses. The case studies describe current library-press partnerships from the perspective of institutional context, publishing services, and respective roles and responsibilities. Authors also briefly discuss the possible future of the library-press partnership in scholarly publishing.

Memory And The Realization Of The Nothingness. On A Letter Of Vittorio Sereni To Giuseppe Ungaretti, Stefano Giannini
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
The problematic relationship of Giuseppe Ungaretti (1888-1970) with Alexandria of Egypt – his city of birth – sheds light on the interplay between memory and oblivion in his poetry and prose. The shuttling back and forth between these poles marks the nature of his unfulfilled desire to recreate a lost Alexandrian atmosphere. In Ungaretti’s works, language opacity is coupled with his attempts to represent a city—as he writes—that is suffocated by the sun and whose hidden ancient port is submerged in the depth of the sea. Blinding light and the darkness of the deep waters make the understanding of Ungaretti’s …
