More Than Meets The Eye: Special Effects And The Fantastic Transmedia Franchise, Bob Rehak
More Than Meets The Eye: Special Effects And The Fantastic Transmedia Franchise, Bob Rehak
Film & Media Studies Faculty Works
From comic book universes crowded with soaring superheroes and shattering skyscrapers to cosmic empires set in far-off galaxies, today’s fantasy blockbusters depend on visual effects. Bringing science fiction from the studio to your screen, through film, television, or video games, these special effects power our entertainment industry. More Than Meets the Eye delves into the world of fantastic media franchises to trace the ways in which special effects over the last 50 years have become central not just to transmedia storytelling but to worldbuilding, performance, and genre in contemporary blockbuster entertainment. More Than Meets the Eye maps the ways in …
Sovereignty Versus Sectarianism: Contested Norms And The Logic Of Regional Conflict In The Greater Levant, Steven Heydemann, Emelie Chace-Danahue
Sovereignty Versus Sectarianism: Contested Norms And The Logic Of Regional Conflict In The Greater Levant, Steven Heydemann, Emelie Chace-Danahue
Middle East Studies: Faculty Publications
The Middle East is experiencing an extended period of turmoil and violent conflict. Two main explanations exist to account for heightened levels of conflict and competition. The first attributes current conditions to the intensification of sectarian polarization in the Arab east; regional dynamics are best explained by identity politics, which serve as instruments of sectarian regimes. The second attributes current conditions to state weakness; states in the Arab east are fragile, lacking effective institutions and suffering from a deficit of legitimacy, allowing state elites to govern in ways that exacerbate social cleavages. We view both these arguments as insufficient to …

Mauritian Literature Versus The Cambridge International Education System, Iman Gareeboo
Mauritian Literature Versus The Cambridge International Education System, Iman Gareeboo
Honors Program Theses
The motivating issue that drove me to compare Mauritian literature and the public literary education system is my fascination at the fact that the school system is British while the majority of popular Mauritian literature is written in French, with a burgeoning subgroup of works written in Mauritian Kreol. I cannot explain the divide, and many Mauritian students do study French language and (limited) literature, but I seek to show that Mauritians should be interested in their own literature and that they should actively question their British education.
More Than A Game: Baseball And Southern Textile Communities 1880-1935, Aaron Perch
More Than A Game: Baseball And Southern Textile Communities 1880-1935, Aaron Perch
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
While labor unrest itself is no stranger to American history, the strikes across the Piedmont textile industry in 1934 present a curious case. Throughout the conflict, a sizeable portion of the workers remained loyal to their companies and those who protested returned to the factories within a short period, often to the same management and conditions. Historians Daniel Singal and Trent Watts – in attempting to explain the workers’ willingness to return to work – have offered that the textile industry deliberately recreated the South’s traditional master-slave labor relationship. They suggest that mill management’s paternalistic efforts and persistent attempts to …
The Correlation Of Classical, Jazz, And Pop Music To A Reduction Of Dental Anxiety Experienced By Adult Patients, Heather Wright
The Correlation Of Classical, Jazz, And Pop Music To A Reduction Of Dental Anxiety Experienced By Adult Patients, Heather Wright
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This study explored whether passive music listening caused a decrease in dental anxiety experienced by adult dental hygiene patients and whether there was a difference between genres of music: classical, jazz or pop. This study also looked at the effect of song familiarity and patient music preference on any decrease in anxiety. I worked with sixty adult patients, who were randomly assigned to listen to classical, jazz, pop, or no music at all. Each patient took a dental anxiety survey before and after their teeth cleaning. These surveys were based on the Modified Corah Dental Anxiety Scale. Music was selected …
The Art Of The Tweet: How To Change Political Rhetoric In 140 Characters Or Less, Alice Byrd
The Art Of The Tweet: How To Change Political Rhetoric In 140 Characters Or Less, Alice Byrd
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Excerpt from Literature Review
The Internet age has seen a huge shift in the way that candidates communicate their political rhetoric, because there has been a huge shift in how voters consume that rhetoric. Twitter and Facebook are now some of the vehicles by which voters consume political rhetoric. Twitter and Facebook are home to lots of non-political content, but many members of the politically engaged community have flocked to both social networking sites to create politically engaged social networks. The emergence of social media as an important information source within the electorate has fundamentally changed not only the way …

The Sovereign Signifier: Agamben And The Nonhuman - Chapter, Paul Eisenstein
Faculty Books
This book initiates the discussion between psychoanalysis and recent humanist and social scientific interest in a fundamental contemporary topic – the nonhuman. The authors question where we situate the subject (as distinct from the human) in current critical investigations of a nonanthropoentric universe.

Black Wax(Ing): On Gil Scott-Heron And The Walking Interlude, Derrais Carter
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
The film opens in an unidentified wax museum. The camera pans from right to left, zooming in on key Black historical figures who have been memorialized in wax. W.E.B. Du Bois, Marian Anderson, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, and Duke Ellington stand out. The final wax figure, a Black man, sits with an empty card box in his right hand and a lit cigarette in his left. The film’s narrator appears: a slim, afroed Black man. He sits to the right of the figure. The only living person in a room full of bodies, he reaches over to grab the …
Wise Or Foolish: Women In Mormon Biblical Narrative Art, Jennifer Champoux
Wise Or Foolish: Women In Mormon Biblical Narrative Art, Jennifer Champoux
BYU Studies
Visual imagery is an inescapable element of religion. Even those groups that generally avoid figural imagery, such as those in Judaism and Islam, have visual objects with religious significance.1 In fact, as David Morgan, professor of religious studies and art history at Duke University, has argued, it is often the religions that avoid figurative imagery that end up with the richest material culture.2 To some extent, this is true for Mormonism. Although Mormons believe art can beautify a space, visual art is not tied to actual ritual practice. Chapels, for example, where the sacrament ordinance is performed, are built with …

I wept for Armando Palomo at his viewing lunch. I don't know what set me off. Maybe it was the weight of my steady indifference over the years, or the thought that had things been reversed and it been my viewing, he'd have been too busy consoling my family, stirring the mood to a warm reverence, to reckon with the reasons for our losing touch. But whatever hard truth the crying had flushed out of me was soon lost to my embarrassment at the thought that others at the table had taken my tears to mean that Armando and I …

China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn
China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn
BYU Asian Studies Student Journal
On 8 May 2002, shocking images of five North Korean refugees at a Japanese consulate in northeast China were captured. Although two members of the party—both men—successfully made it inside the consulate, two women and a child were dragged away from the gate of their safe haven by Chinese police (Gittings 2002). All five individuals were eventually detained—and though their fates remain unknown, it is likely they were immediately deported to North Korea, possibly the worst outcome for any North Korean defector.
