What Loanwords Tell Us About Spanish (And Spain), Adriana Soto Corominas, Javier De La Rosa, Juan Luis Suárez

CulturePlex Lab Publications

Using one lexicographical tool, the Diccionario Crítico Etimológico Castellano e Hispánico (DECH), and two corpora, the HathiTrust’s digital library and the Google Books Ngrams, we tracked the occurrence of thousands of loanwords in Spanish to describe their use, origin, and historical context. In doing so, we used computational methodologies to parse, lemmatize, group, count, and extract the information of all these tools. Results from parsing the etymologies of the DECH dictionary reveal a strong influence of Greek and French on the Spanish lexicon. The results from tracking the occurrence of loanwords in Spanish reveal a clear trend in the use …

How Does The Psychology Of Loneliness Affect The Desire To Travel Alone?, Zoe M. Myers Feb 2018

How Does The Psychology Of Loneliness Affect The Desire To Travel Alone?, Zoe M. Myers

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Do feelings of loneliness affect an individual’s desire to participate in solo travel? There has been extensive research done on the psychology of loneliness: how it is defined, its effects on a person’s mental health, possible explanations for its causes, and what can be done to resolve the emotion. Regarding solo travel, the act of traveling alone has experienced an immense growth in the past decade. However, there has been little to no research completed regarding an explanation as to why many people still have no desire to travel alone. Do these people typically have a greater sense of loneliness …

Grabbing Back: An Analysis Of Womanism And Cinematic Representation In These Hands, Taija Walker Feb 2018

Grabbing Back: An Analysis Of Womanism And Cinematic Representation In These Hands, Taija Walker

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Flora M’mbugu-Schelling’s 1992 documentary These Hands is a 45-minute film depicting the crushing and processing of rocks by women working at a site in Tanzania. Unlike a typical documentary, there are no interviews conducted nor narrator to provide context for the viewer, so the film is heavily reliant on visuals and diegetic sound in conveying information and themes to the audience. Although These Hands, lacking in plot and narration, seems like a simple film with little substance, it is clear that there is an underlying agenda and an extremely powerful message, both being womanist in nature, that M’mbugu-Schelling reveals …

Dragon Slayers: Remastering And Redefining The Enduring Struggle, Lexine Lynner

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This paper uses a historical perspective to examine the lasting appeal of a particular fairy tale throughout a variety of cultures and time periods. By analyzing the various interpretations of characters within the dragon slayer tale type, we can see the cultural significance of fairy tales throughout history. It examines similarities and differences between three examples of the tale type (Perseus and Andromeda from 8 AD in Greece and Rome, The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok from the 13th Century in Northern Europe, and The Two Brothers from 1857 in Germany), taking into account the differing perspectives and life experiences …

Almost Happy, Kaylee Christenson

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This photograph is an 8x10” print that was taken on 35mm film and developed in the Darkroom. The text on the image was incorporated during the enlarging process, in which a transparency with the handwritten words was fixed on top of the paper that was being exposed. This was a laborious process as it took a lot of trial and error to get just right, but the result is always a worthwhile endeavor.

The Dialectic Of Second-Language Learning: On Becoming An Asl-English Interpreter, Campbell Mcdermid

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

A small group of interpreters was interviewed with regard to their view of learning ASL and becoming bicultural. A model of identity was then postulated based on Hegel’s dialectic (Wheat 2012) of thesis (presuppositions, stereotypes, or theories about ASL and the Deaf community), antithesis (conflicting experiences), and synthesis (new understanding and acceptance). Also utilized were various identity constructs from the literature on bilingualism/ biculturalism, which suggests that identity is ascribed or constructed in relation to others and constantly negotiated (Tropp et al. 1999). Evidence was found of a period of thesis or position, during which some interpreters had no presuppositions …

Remember The Sabbath, A.J. Swoboda Feb 2018

Remember The Sabbath, A.J. Swoboda

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "Microwaves. Smart phones. Cars. Our culture has more time-saving devices, technological conveniences, and cheaper mobility than any point in history. We now live in a 24/7 world in which every good and service is available around the clock at the touch of a button. We have more information at our fingertips and more options at our disposal and yet we are ominously dissatisfied. The rhythms that mark the success-obsessed West have taken their toll on our minds, bodies, relationships, and environment."
