Reasonable Exceptions: Supreme Court Rhetoric And The Right To Privacy, Lindsay Susan Head Mar 2018

Reasonable Exceptions: Supreme Court Rhetoric And The Right To Privacy, Lindsay Susan Head

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Reasonable Exceptions excavates and elaborates the rhetorical, contextual, and ideological underpinnings of the right to privacy. Originating in writing, as a single sentence drafted in 1791, the Fourth Amendment has been one of the most adaptable and unstable concepts in American culture. This project explores the fluctuating ways in which Americans have understood the rights it confers and connects to the ethics of rhetoric and writing practices in a variety of ways. It focus on three seminal Supreme Court opinions, examining their use of precedent and their strategic engagement with contemporaneous technological, social, and political changes: Katz v. United States …

None Of Us Faces Judgment Alone: ‘Zurbarán’S Jacob And His Twelve Sons’ At The Frick, Griffin Oleynick Mar 2018

None Of Us Faces Judgment Alone: ‘Zurbarán’S Jacob And His Twelve Sons’ At The Frick, Griffin Oleynick

Catholic Studies Faculty Publications

Our turning to God during Lent, and our experience of new life at Easter, either happens together, as part of a family of faith, or not at all.

A new exhibition of Spanish paintings by the Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), “Jacob and His Twelve Sons: Paintings from Auckland Castle,” on view through April 22 at the Frick Collection in New York City, provides a refreshing reminder of this dynamic by bringing us into conversation with our religious ancestors, the Old Testament Patriarchs.

Collecting The Past: Using A Private Collection Of Artifacts To Assess Prehistoric Occupation Of The Chipola River Valley In Northwest Florida, Kelsey Kreiser Mar 2018

Collecting The Past: Using A Private Collection Of Artifacts To Assess Prehistoric Occupation Of The Chipola River Valley In Northwest Florida, Kelsey Kreiser

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Chipola River Valley in northwest Florida is an area of extensive occupation by pre-contact peoples, dating as far back as the Paleo-Indian time period (approximately 11,000 BC). With such a rich archaeological history, it has enticed many local divers to explore river bottoms and collect artifacts. I worked with one local collector to study over 700 projectile points found in the Chipola River. The collector has taken great care to protect and preserve these points and, in many cases, documented the GPS coordinates from where they were collected. Using the GPS coordinates and ArcMap, I have been able to …

The Forgotten : Child Soldiers, Sam Fee Mar 2018

The Forgotten : Child Soldiers, Sam Fee

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Child soldiers have been slowly forgotten about by the public over the last century. There are only a few groups of people are trying to fight for these children. As a visual artist, I created a painting, my work entitled Invisible Children utilizes acrylic and wildfire blacklight paint to symbolize the underreported presence of children in global conflict, the hidden image represents the light we need to shine on these issues.

#Makingroom: A Study Of Twitter's Influence On The Social Justice Advocacy Of Women Of Color, Alissa Duong Mar 2018

#Makingroom: A Study Of Twitter's Influence On The Social Justice Advocacy Of Women Of Color, Alissa Duong

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Abstract

This qualitative study looks to discover the effects Twitter has on the social justice advocacy of women of color. Recent studies show that using social media leads to increased political activeness and social justice advocacy. This study examines the relationship between Twitter, women of color, and their social justice advocacy. To test these relationships, secondary research and in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with three prominent women of color in the social justice advocacy community on Twitter. The use of social media, specifically Twitter, allows women of all colors to join and share their experiences, build camaraderie, feel validated, and …

The Impact Of Immigration On Cold War Modernization Efforts: A Case Study Of South Korea, Shannon Hayes Mar 2018

The Impact Of Immigration On Cold War Modernization Efforts: A Case Study Of South Korea, Shannon Hayes

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

This paper explores the intersection of American foreign and domestic policies during the Cold War. The United States sought to foster political and economic alliances in the developing world in the 1950s and 1960s by employing a new foreign policy initiative: modernization theory. Governmental officials and non-state actors carried out these policies in areas of the globe considered the most susceptible to communist influences because of cultural practices and economic realities. However, even while American policymakers sought to modernize political and economic systems, the nation’s own immigration policies may have worked against these efforts. This paper will explore the impact …

The Privilege Of Home: A 400 Year Family History Of Immigration And Inhabitation On Native Land, Kristine Mahler Mar 2018

The Privilege Of Home: A 400 Year Family History Of Immigration And Inhabitation On Native Land, Kristine Mahler

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

This presentation culls together the extensive text-based, place-based, and experience-based research I completed on the history of immigration and inhabitation on native land from 1620 through 2018 through the specific lens of my ancestors: French settlers who lived in Kébec’s St. Lawrence Valley and immigrated to western Wisconsin around 1865, eventually settling in northern Minnesota. As I researched my ancestry alongside the history of white settlement and forced native resettlement in these regions, I recognized a pattern of repeated inhabitation—traced through baptismal, marriage, and death certificates—by my family onto recently-vacated native land.

In my text-based research, I was riveted by …

Let The Other Be Me - The Theo-Political Predicament And The Arab In Shin Shalom’S Early Writings, Haim Otto Rechnitzer Mar 2018

Let The Other Be Me - The Theo-Political Predicament And The Arab In Shin Shalom’S Early Writings, Haim Otto Rechnitzer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Let the Other be Me - The Theo-Political Predicament and the Arab in Shin Shalom's Early Writings" Haim O. Rechnitzer explores the theo-political predicament as reflected in the writings of poet, playwright and novelist Shin Shalom (Parczew Poland 1904–Haifa, Israel 1980). Particular attention is given to writings composed during the intensification of violence between Arabs and Jews in Mandatory Palestine from the early 1920s through the Arab revolt of 1936-39. This period is also a volatile period in Shalom's life; Aliya (Zionist immigration to the Land of Israel) with a Hasidic Zionist group, leaving the Hasidic settlement …

Black Us Army Bands And Their Bandmasters In World War I, Peter M. Lefferts Mar 2018

Black Us Army Bands And Their Bandmasters In World War I, Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

This essay sketches the story of the bands and bandmasters of the twenty seven new black army regiments which served in the U.S. Army in World War I. The new bands underwent rapid mobilization and demobilization with their regiments over 1917-1919. They were for the most part unconnected by personnel or traditions to the long-established bands of the four black regular U.S. Army regiments that preceded them and that continued to serve outside Europe during and after the Great War. Pressed to find sufficient numbers of willing and able black band leaders for these new regiments, the Army turned to …
