On Belief : Aims, Norms, And Functions, Christopher John Atkinson
On Belief : Aims, Norms, And Functions, Christopher John Atkinson
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
In this thesis, I explore answers to three central questions: (i) what are beliefs, (ii) why do we have them, and (iii) how should we interpret doxastic correctness, the principle that it is correct to believe that p if and only if p? The first question has a long history in philosophy of mind, and in various forms can be dated at least as far back as David Hume. For that reason, I refer to the problem as Hume’s Problem. As I interpret the question, the main difficulty with accounting for what beliefs are, is in distinguishing them from forms …

Social Identity Theory And Public Opinion Towards Immigration, Maurice Mangum, Ray Block Jr.
Social Identity Theory And Public Opinion Towards Immigration, Maurice Mangum, Ray Block Jr.
Political Science Faculty Publications
Several scholars have called upon social identity theory to investigate the relationship between an American national identity and American public opinion on immigration. Lacking a uniform measure of American identity, by and large, scholars find that a two-dimensional conception of American identity influences these opinions. Our review suggests that the extant measures of American identity do not fully account for the various aspects of social identity theory. We capture more fully the different components of social identity theory. By doing so, we find that American identity has five dimensions. Therefore, in this analysis, we advance a more comprehensive measure of …
Using Multilingual Literature To Enhance Multilingual Students’ Experiences In Second Language Writing Classes: An Innovative Classroom Practice, Ekaterina Arshavskaya
Using Multilingual Literature To Enhance Multilingual Students’ Experiences In Second Language Writing Classes: An Innovative Classroom Practice, Ekaterina Arshavskaya
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Research on second language writing instruction consistently shows low levels of student engagement (Lee, 2012) in writing classes. In order to address this challenge, researchers have argued for the need to introduce various forms of expressive writing (Bilton & Sivasubramaniam, 2009), including student interpretive practice with texts (Kramsch, 1997).
Another common problem associated with second language writing instruction is lack of connection between writing and reading activities. Prominent language educators have long recognized the benefits of connecting reading and writing activities with English learners (Krashen, 1992). According to Krashen (1992), we learn to write through reading. To resolve these multiple …

The spiritual practice of Islam is considered one of the three major monotheistic religions. Islam is the second largest religion in the world with 1.6 billion followers; about 3.5 million of those live in the U.S.1 The number of Muslims in the U.S. is projected to double by 2030.1 Additionally, the number of adults age 65 and older in the U.S. is projected to double from 46 million today to over 98 million by 2060.2 As the U.S. population ages, many healthcare workers are often too overwhelmed to handle the varying and intricate social, economic, familial, spiritual, and cultural needs …
Review: The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights And The Challenge Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan
Review: The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights And The Challenge Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan
Religion Faculty Publications
Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, the language of human rights has become a lingua franca among many jurists, philosophers, and theologians. But over the same period of time, the universalist aspirations of human rights language have also attracted myriad critics, both religious and secular. For these critics, the language of human rights isn’t sufficiently common to identify, discuss, and adjudicate moral and political issues. In The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Challenge of Religion, the rightly influential human rights scholar Johannes Morsink develops an argument that …

Language As Communication Vs. Language As Art: J.R.R. Tolkien And Early 20th-Century Radical Linguistic Experimentation, Dimitra Fimi
Language As Communication Vs. Language As Art: J.R.R. Tolkien And Early 20th-Century Radical Linguistic Experimentation, Dimitra Fimi
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article situates Tolkien’s “A Secret Vice” (and its accompanying notes and papers) within the cultural and intellectual milieu of the early 20th century. It claims that at the heart of Tolkien’s exploration in this material is the question of language as communication vs. language as art. It argues that Tolkien’s language invention navigates the (perceived) binary between a utilitarian aim for language invention (contemporary International Auxiliary Languages) vs. an aesthetic linguistic pursuit (contemporary Modernist and other avant-garde linguistic experimentation), by choosing a third (middle) way. It examines Tolkien's linguistic invention alongside the work of Sapir, Jespersen, Joyce, Stein, and …

Reviving The Past: The Battle Flag In The Confederate Memorial Period, Olivia Ortman
Reviving The Past: The Battle Flag In The Confederate Memorial Period, Olivia Ortman
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
In the years immediately following the Civil War, the Confederate battle flag mostly disappeared from public view. In their diaries, Southerners wrote about hiding flags and other Confederate symbols for fear of Union retaliation. In most cases, Southerners intuitively understood that these symbols were now taboo, but occasionally, they stated that Union troops explicitly forbade displays of the battle flag. Some Southerners did still flaunt the flag as a means of defiance against Union troops, as mentioned in my last post, but most people quietly tucked it away. A mere five years after the war ended, though, the flag …

Library Staff Research and Scholarship
Digital Humanities, Libraries, and Partnerships brings forward ideas and reflections that stay fresh beyond the changing technological landscape. The book encapsulates a cultural shift for libraries and librarians and presents a collection of authors who reflect on the collaborations they have formed around digital humanities work. Authors examine a range of issues, including labor equity, digital infrastructure, digital pedagogy, and community partnerships. Readers will find kinship in the complexities of the partnerships described in this book, and become more equipped to conceptualize their own paths and partnerships.

MPP Published Research
"This is Giorgio's Israel last book, which appeared only a few weeks after his untimely death, in September 2015. For many reasons, it can be considered as his intellectual legacy, since it comes back, in a new and organic way, to many of the research topics to which he devoted his life and his many publications, which include several papers in Historia Mathematica. One of these papers, co-authored with M. Menghini, appeared in vol. 25/4, 1998 and was devoted to Poincaré's and Enriques's opposite views on qualitative analysis, which is a theme also dealt with in this book (pp. 117–122)."
