Belief And Practice: Spiritual Imperatives For The Adventist Teacher, Joel Luc Raveloharimisy

Faculty Publications

"The apostle Paul’s advice to Timothy also provides a clear message for teachers in relation to living a spiritual life: “Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:16, NASB).6 For that purpose, I want to present two ways teachers can strengthen their walk with God so they can have confidence about their salvation and represent God effectively and efficiently to their students. This model is based on a principle found in spiritual-leadership literature. …

Entrepreneurial Church Planting, Jay Moon Jul 2017

Entrepreneurial Church Planting, Jay Moon

Great Commission Research Journal

Entrepreneurial church planting (ECP) explores innovative approaches for church planting in the marketplace. This article describes how entrepreneurial church plants leverage the networking and value creation provided by business in order to form communities of Christ followers among unchurched people. Biblical, theological, historical, and missiological support is provided to guide ECP planters. Four contemporary examples provide a paradigm of church planters that are typically suited for this approach to include the artist, social scientist, evangelist, and builder. These examples demonstrate the potential of ECP to break out of limited contexts and plant churches in larger networks of relationships in the …

Des Féminismes Du Sud Dans Bilqiss De Saphia Azzeddine, C. Calargé, Alexandra Gueydan-Turek

French & Francophone Studies Faculty Works

In the current social climate of an increasingly normalized Islamophobia, representations of Islam and Muslim women are as problematic as ever. This is partly due to the risk run by any cultural production dealing with the patriarchy and women's oppression in the Arab-muslim world of being instrumentalized. Accordingly, any such production must be considered alongside questions of its intended consumption or its possible complicity with the dominant order. With this in mind, the article examines Saphia Azzeddine's last novel, Bilqiss. It analyzes the literary strategies the author deploys in order to counter expectations about Muslim women from Western readers, and …

Critical Discourse Analysis Of Discursive Reproduction Of Identities In The Thai Undergraduates' Home For Children With Disabilities Website Project: Critical Analysis Of Lexical Selection, Melada Sudajit-Apa

PASAA

Analyzing discourses can shed light on language as a social semiotic system, the construction of identity and the operations of ideology and power. The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, it aims to unveil Thai fourth-year English-major students' utilization of lexical choices with connotations that enact the identities of the Baan Nontapum Foundation (BNF) or Home for Children with Disabilities, in their website project. Secondly, the study was conducted to further explore how and why those discursive strategies were utilized to construe the BNF and disability identities through the participants' lexical selection. In this study, the social model of …

The Role Of Frequency On The Acquisition Of L2 English Infinitive And Gerund Complements By L1 Thai Learners, Raksina Keawchaum, Nattama Pongpairoj Jul 2017

The Role Of Frequency On The Acquisition Of L2 English Infinitive And Gerund Complements By L1 Thai Learners, Raksina Keawchaum, Nattama Pongpairoj

PASAA

This study investigated how frequency influenced acquisition of L2 English infinitive and gerund complements among L1 Thai learners. Participants were separated into low and high proficiency groups based on their CU-TEP scores. Each group consisted of 30 participants. Data were collected using the Word Selection Task (WST) and the Grammaticality Judgement Test (GJT). Initial findings revealed that L1 Thai learners acquired infinitive complements before gerund complements. This could probably be explained by the usage-based theory, specifically, the concept of type frequency. It was assumed that learners acquired infinitive complements first because they were considered a high type frequency construction, and …

The participants generally appreciated the contributory …

More Heads Are Better Than One: Peer Editing In A Translation Classroom Of Efl Learners, Sakolkarn Insai, Tongtip Poonlarp Jul 2017

More Heads Are Better Than One: Peer Editing In A Translation Classroom Of Efl Learners, Sakolkarn Insai, Tongtip Poonlarp

PASAA

During the process of translation, students need to learn how to detect and correct errors in their translation drafts, and collaboration among themselves is one possible way to do this. As Pym (2003) has explained, translation is a process of problem-solving; translators must be able to decide which choices are more or less appropriate for the specified purpose of translation. Therefore, it is necessary for the teacher to create a learning environment that facilitates the students, not only to learn how to solve the problems, but also to be exposed to other possible solutions of those problems. This paper aims …

The present study was conducted to fill the research gap by examining the current practices of teachers in teaching reading and how the teachers handle and organize reading comprehension. This study employed a descriptive and interpretive case study design that was analyzed through qualitative methods. On a multifaceted basis, this paper explores the challenges experienced by native and non-native English language teachers (NESTs and NNESTs) in a tertiary-level EFL setting in Turkey. Adopting a qualitative case study design, the data were gathered from five NESTs through interviews and from five NNESTs through hand-written accounts based on the template for challenges in ELT (TCELT), and analysed through deductive thematic analysis. The findings showed that the NESTs and NNESTs perceive similar as well as different challenges in the language preparatory program where they are co-teaching. Student-related and institutional parameters accounted for the NNESTs' problems, whereas on the …

PASAA

In recognition of the growing volume of communication between people from different cultural backgrounds around the globe presently, this study was conducted to investigate Thai EFL teachers' perceptions toward intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in three dimensions: (i) their understanding of ICC; (ii) their views on how to integrate ICC into English language teaching; and (iii) their perceptions of ICC's contributions to learners' English communicative competence. Evidentiality, Questions And The Reflection Principle In Tibetan: What Do Children Learn When They Learn About Evidentiality?, Jill De Villiers, Jay L. Garfield Jul 2017

Evidentiality, Questions And The Reflection Principle In Tibetan: What Do Children Learn When They Learn About Evidentiality?, Jill De Villiers, Jay L. Garfield

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Evidentials fall in the borderland between traditional semantics and pragmatics. A situation semantics for evidentials helps to explain their puzzling developmental pathway in children. Drawing on our work in Tibetan, we argue that there is no necessity for a child to master Theory of Mind, that is, awareness of others' mental states, in order to make or to understand assertions that carry evidential force. The meaning of evidentials does not make reference to states of knowledge of persons, but rather encodes relations between discourse, evidence and evaluation situations. On the other hand, when a Tibetan speaker asks a question, the …

The Evolution Of An Enduring Expertise: Understanding Irish Economists In Irish Public Discourse In The Great Recession, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke Jul 2017

The Evolution Of An Enduring Expertise: Understanding Irish Economists In Irish Public Discourse In The Great Recession, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke

Other

This work focuses on the institutional and social contexts of Irish economists’ prominence in public discourse in Ireland during the Great Recession. While examining performative aspects of experts’ legitimacy is important, understanding the wider societal context of how particular professional expertise is recognised is also vital (Collins & Evans 2007). The economics profession generally is characterised by strong hierarchy and dense integration (Fourcade, 2009; Mirowski & Plehwe, 2009; Pautz, 2014), we explore such phenomena in the Irish context. The Irish context is of interest more generally as a prominent PIIGS country in the Eurozone crisis, as a small peripheral state …

Bringing Stories To Life By Sharing Archival Material, Christina M. Noto

Student Publications

Last summer I researched the experiences of women at Gettysburg College during the pivotal decade 1965-1975 with the support of a college grant, the Koble Fellowship, a ten-week humanities based faculty-mentored research project. I tracked women's experiences at the college during this period and designed a digital scholarship project to share their stories. As a history major and as a feminist, a project about the history of women and their activism on campus nicely complemented by interests. (excerpt)

The paper also goes into how Voldemort's inability to feel love, paired with his fear of dying, have pushed his quest for immortality (using Horcruxes). Harry's mastery …

Road To The Restoration Of The Ohrid Archbishopric, Dejan Borisov

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The restoration of the abolished Ohrid Archbishopric did not begin with the processes at the end of the World War II, but immediately after its abolition in the eighteenth century. The restoration of the Ohrid Archbishopric as the Macedonian Orthodox Church is in full accordance with the church tradition and practices established by the other local Orthodox churches in the process of obtaining their autocephaly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Church Life In Macedonia During World War Ii, Mikhail Vitalyevich Shkarovsky

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article is devoted to the history of church life in Macedonia during the occupation from 1941 to 1944, which contributed to the initiation of the organization of the autocephalous Macedonian Orthodox Church. This process was prompted both by the spiritual administration of the Bulgarian Church and the communist government. The growth of the Macedonian Church occurred immediately after World War II with the communist government of Yugoslavia’s active support since they were interested in diminishing the influence of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The Thousand-Year Spiritual Tradition Of Lesnovo Monastery In Macedonia, Ilija Velev Jul 2017

The Thousand-Year Spiritual Tradition Of Lesnovo Monastery In Macedonia, Ilija Velev

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Through the rich Christian tradition in Macedonia from the early Christian, medieval and up to the modern period numerous churches and monasteries were built, where all forms of development of spiritual and cultural life took place. A historically remarkable location is Lesnovo Monastery, which has survived until today during almost one thousand years of spiritual and cultural tradition in Macedonia. The oldest indirect and legendary sources point to the conclusion that the original construction of the monastic church in Lesnovo should be moved to the period of the eleventh century, when from 1018 onwards, after the fall of Samuil's Slavic …

Two Models Of Inspiration?: The Challenge Of The Old Testament Narratives, Bernard White Jul 2017

Two Models Of Inspiration?: The Challenge Of The Old Testament Narratives, Bernard White

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"...it is not that the “two-model” view is wrong in seeking to show that inspiration was not always functioning in the same way in the biblical authors. It is simply that it is inadequate: the research model cannot be applied wholesale to the non-prophetic books, even to narratives alone. Short of declaring many of the OT narratives to be fiction, it therefore seems necessary to posit that certain of them, or sections of them, were supernaturally revealed to the authors. The prophetic model, in other words, is far more widespread a phenomenon of Scripture than the “two-model” view would suggest. …

Atonement In Revelation—Part I: Love, Substitution, Liberation, Doxology, Larry L. Lichtenwalter Jul 2017

Atonement In Revelation—Part I: Love, Substitution, Liberation, Doxology, Larry L. Lichtenwalter

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"Two broad understandings of what atonement signifies in Revelation compete for primacy: 1) whether atonement in Revelation “signifies primarily a sacrificial death that expiates sin and puts humanity right with God”;17 or 2) whether it refers to “the larger cosmological significance of Christ’s death as it relates to the overcoming of evil and the working out of God’s purposes on earth.”18 The former would see atonement as substitutionary19 and thus relating to realities of human sin and the need for personal redemption. This includes both objective and subjective aspects of atonement. The latter would be revelatory, relating primarily to questions …

Miracles And Natural Law: Are They Compatible?, Glauber S. Araujo Jul 2017

Miracles And Natural Law: Are They Compatible?, Glauber S. Araujo

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"We have tried here to bring together the contribution of many who saw the incoherence in Hume’s violation theory and have proposed a different view of the universe, where the natural and the supernatural cooperate with each other, maintaining the possibility of miracles. By avoiding Hume’s proposition, they were able to present a worldview of a universe open to divine action, turning the belief in miracles into a reasonable option. Miracles, although naturally impossible, do not need to be understood as opposing natural laws, but can be interpreted as events in nature produced by a supernatural cause, having a spiritual …

Ellen White, Health, And The Third Angel’S Message: Part 2: Minimizing Non-Communicable Diseases, Warren A. Shipton Jul 2017

Ellen White, Health, And The Third Angel’S Message: Part 2: Minimizing Non-Communicable Diseases, Warren A. Shipton

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"There have been remarkable changes in causes of human diseases identified in the last 150 years. Following the discovery of antibiotics and their widespread adoption since mid-last century and other advances in the field of microbiology, the incidence of contagious diseases has declined. Now the world is facing the danger of epidemics of non-communicable diseases that are related to life-style choices. Societies have invited and experienced these diseases for a long time, but they are now ravaging our health. In the times when Ellen White wrote, she laid a firm foundation for maintenance of physical health by anchoring her advice …

Race, The Condition Of Neo-Liberalism, Vikash Singh Jul 2017

Race, The Condition Of Neo-Liberalism, Vikash Singh

Department of Sociology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This article addresses the social and historical relation between Chicago School neo-liberalism and contemporary racism, and its connections with the formations of racism in classical liberalism and its colonial character. I show the pragmatic and discursive operations of neo-racism in the context of this shift to a neo-liberal discourse, drawing particularly on Michel Foucault’s seminars, Society Must be Defended, and Birth of Bio-politics. Insofar as “race” cannot be understood as a discrete category outside its social, economic, moral, and political embeddedness in liberalism, I argue that methodological individualism and expectations of high-specialization constrain the theorization of race in U.S. scholarship. …
