Black Studies Faculty Publications

Recently I conducted a scholarly research project for my Master’s Degree class of study at Bellevue University. I wrote two 2000-word papers on my finding. Both papers analyzed finding from a random survey which included an interview question. The survey asked about voter habits, age, race, and reasons for the participant who are not voting, why not. The results were stimulating and I plan to expand on the study this year. The two papers are available from my website: prestonlovejr.com/blackvotesmatter/case study.

We are a non-profit organization with the goal to resettle refugees into a small-scale community with opportunities of education, employment, and housing. With the focus on cities between a 5,000 to 60,000 population, refugees have the chance to utilize their skill sets to improve and evolve a current community without being strongly labeled as a “refugee.”

Our project is designed to serve as a means for speakers of different languages to communicate using pictorial icons, particularly to serve basic needs such as food and water. At a refugee camp or other first point of contact, a volunteer or aid worker can be wearing a t-shirt, giving away blankets, or using flash cards with the symbols printed on them and the refugee can communicate their needs.

The Golden Age Of Phenomenology At The New School For Social Research, 1954–1973, Lester Embree, Michael D. Barber Sep 2017

The Golden Age Of Phenomenology At The New School For Social Research, 1954–1973, Lester Embree, Michael D. Barber

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This collection focuses on the introduction of phenomenology to the United States by the community of scholars who taught and studied at the New School for Social Research from 1954 through 1973. During those years, Dorion Cairns, Alfred Schutz, and Aron Gurwitsch—all former students of Edmund Husserl—came together in the department of philosophy to establish the first locus of phenomenology scholarship in the country. This founding trio was soon joined by three other prominent scholars in the field: Werner Marx, Thomas M. Seebohm, and J. N. Mohanty. The Husserlian phenomenology that they brought to the New School has subsequently spread …

The Nation Of Gods And Earths: Its Predecessors, Early History, And Influence In Hip Hip Culture, Adrienne Jones Sep 2017

The Nation Of Gods And Earths: Its Predecessors, Early History, And Influence In Hip Hip Culture, Adrienne Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Islamic culture is undoubtedly a facet of African American history. The most commonly thought of black Islamic group is the Nation of Islam (NOI). Scholars have begun to closely examine the NOI’s predecessor and dissent groups. Expanding scholarship beyond well-known NOI figures such as Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan, recent study now assesses the influence of older figures and their organizations. In conjunction with examining these older models, recent study of the NOI also analyzes schismatic groups that formed out of this organization. This thesis reviews the NOI’s influential Islamic and/or black nationalist predecessors, the NOI’s early history …

Snags, Sawyers, And Shifting Opinion: The Usage And Response To Snag Boats And Improvement On The Arkansas River From 1800-1860, Michael Colton Adkisson Sep 2017

Snags, Sawyers, And Shifting Opinion: The Usage And Response To Snag Boats And Improvement On The Arkansas River From 1800-1860, Michael Colton Adkisson

Student Theses and Dissertations

For farmers along the Arkansas River from 1800-1860, river commerce was an extension of Manifest Destiny. Tying into the larger commerce of the Mississippi was a goal that governed Arkansas planter perceptions of U.S. river improvement programs. Programs like Henry Miller Shreve’s snag boats sought to improve the navigability and safety of the western rivers. The result of this desire to construct a salubrious frontier would be the staunch support for U.S. snag boats and federal improvement during the onset of their usage on the Arkansas River, and an equally strong rebuttal when their ineffectual capabilities eventually became clear. The …

Surface Tension, William Tedford Grimmett Sep 2017

Surface Tension, William Tedford Grimmett

Theses and Dissertations

I photograph objects and sites that exhibit translucent and reflective surface properties. These objects and scenes project multiplicities and degrees of transparency and opacity that suggest depth, movement and passing time. I think of these objects and sites as artifacts found in situ. My photographs are affirmations of a constructed, found and realized world that is often unseen or unrecognized. These images are a personal iconography, symbols of a process of awareness and identity that involves combining childhood memories of play and looking with intent as necessary cognitive and emotional processes.

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Died Today. Or, Maybe, Yesterday; I Can't Be Sure..., Christopher R. Fee

English Faculty Publications

50 years on, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead continues to captivate and to entertain audiences with its darkly comic examination of existential themes of life, death, and indecision drawn from the pages, situations, and characters of Hamlet. First produced at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1966, the play opened at the Old Vic in London in 1967, and has been reprised there this season to rave reviews, with none other than Harry Potter in a leading role.

The Apparition Of These Screens In The Crowd, Trey Conatser

Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

To unpack some of our assumptions about attention, learning, and technology in the classroom, CELT's Trey Conatser spoke with Dr. Yuha Jung and Dr. Rachel Shane of the Department of Arts Administration. Jung and Shane have worked with colleagues to integrate technologies into their teaching so that students are more likely to be on task. What follows is an informal exploration of what it means to pay attention and to learn in the context of the contested value of digital technologies.

CELT's Dr. Nicole Martin asked Dr. Davis about his goals for student learning, and how he encourages students to develop skills in historical analysis through virtual world-building.

On Cheating And Prosperity, Trey Conatser Sep 2017

On Cheating And Prosperity, Trey Conatser

Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

At the outset of a new academic year, we'd do well to reflect on how we pitch academic integrity—and the concept of cheating—to our students. Not only does it affect how they see us as teachers and scholars; it also affects in profound ways how we see (or don't see) students as complex human beings. And this asks us to go against our gut reactions to the apparent moral legibility of cheating. If we understand cheating as an evasive concept, and as a product of our institutions, we're much less likely to incentivize it.
