Words + Pictures: A Manifesto, Jean Braithwaite
Words + Pictures: A Manifesto, Jean Braithwaite
Creative Writing Faculty Publications
In the second decade of the 21st century, academic comics studies is well established as a serious intellectual subject, but for many non-specialists, including university administrators, a sense of frivolity still attaches to comics. This brief essay braids together personal history and intellectual analysis: 1) it compares the cultural position of comics today to the position of novels in the 19th century; 2) it analyzes the complementary nature of the verbal and visual channels; 3) it argues that neither words nor pictures should be considered primary in a narratology of comics; and 4) that comics are eminently well suited to …
El Arte De "Lágrimas En La Lluvia", Todd K. Mack
El Arte De "Lágrimas En La Lluvia", Todd K. Mack
Alambique.

Peer Punishment Promotes Enforcement Of Bad Social Norms, Klaus Abbink, Lata Gangadharan, Toby Handfield, John Thrasher
Peer Punishment Promotes Enforcement Of Bad Social Norms, Klaus Abbink, Lata Gangadharan, Toby Handfield, John Thrasher
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Social norms are an important element in explaining how humans achieve very high levels of cooperative activity. It is widely observed that, when norms can be enforced by peer punishment, groups are able to resolve social dilemmas in prosocial, cooperative ways. Here we show that punishment can also encourage participation in destructive behaviours that are harmful to group welfare, and that this phenomenon is mediated by a social norm. In a variation of a public goods game, in which the return to investment is negative for both group and individual, we find that the opportunity to punish led to higher …

Female Identity In Baroque Art, Analise Austin
Female Identity In Baroque Art, Analise Austin
Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)
Throughout the Baroque period, and much of art history, women were
portrayed as either saints or sinners, pictures of purity or wicked temptresses.
Women have known little middle ground historically, despite occupying
diverse roles and representing half the world’s population. In the
Baroque, Catholic-dominated period, this polarization prescribed women the
biblically-based roles of either saint or “sinner.” Jusepe de Ribera’s “The Holy
Family with Saints Anne and Catherine of Alexandria” (1648), exemplifies
women’s roles as saint, mother and virgin, depicting each with soft, feminine
energy surrounding baby Jesus. Relation to men bounds Maryóher lack of
intimacy with men, her purity; …

The Merchant Of Venice, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2017-2018 Women Innovators in the Performing Arts
Karin Coonrod “looks for the flash in the actors’ eyes and listens for the music of the audience.” Now this internationally acclaimed director brings her groundbreaking production of Shakespeare’s most controversial play, The Merchant of Venice, to the US. Coonrod first staged this thorny masterpiece in 2016 in its original setting, the Jewish ghetto of Venice, to mark the 500th anniversary of its creation. Five actors of different races, creeds, nationalities, and genders play Shylock, the iconic Jewish moneylender at the center of the play. According to Coonrod, “these five actors, all of them very different, open up the play …

Alma Mater, Mater Exulum. Jesuit Education And Immigration In America: A Moral Framework Rooted In History And Mission, Michael M. Canaris
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Book Description: The current daily experiences of undocumented students as they navigate the processes of entering and then thriving in Jesuit colleges are explored alongside an investigation of the knowledge and attitudes among staff and faculty about undocumented students in their midst, and the institutional response to their presence. Cutting across the fields of U.S. immigration policy, theory and history, religion, law, and education, Undocumented and in College delineates the historical and present-day contexts of immigration, including the role of religious institutions. This unique volume, based on an extensive two-year study (2010-12) of undocumented students at Jesuit colleges in the …
Hindu Students And Their Missionary Teachers: Debating The Relevance Of Rebirth In The Colonial Indian Academy, Nalini Bhushan
Hindu Students And Their Missionary Teachers: Debating The Relevance Of Rebirth In The Colonial Indian Academy, Nalini Bhushan
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
This essay provides a meta-narrative for the philosophical dialogues that took place in colonial India between Scottish missionary philosophers and philosophers of Veda ̄nta on the topic of karma and rebirth. In particular, it offers a reconstruction and analysis of the context and strategy that shaped the content of discussions that were initiated in the pages of the Madras Christian College Magazine in 1909 between Subrahmanya Sastri and AG Hogg and that inspired Radhakrishnan’s response in his dissertation entitled “The Ethics of Vedanta and its Metaphysical Suppositions”. The broad context is provided by a history of missionary presence in India. …
