วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาปัญหาในทฤษฎีประชาธิปไตยแบบร่วมไตร่ตรองในแง่ของความเสมอภาคเป็นสำคัญ โดยการศึกษาถึงข้อสนับสนุนและข้อโต้แย้งของกระบวนการร่วมไตร่ตรองที่อาจสร้างผลกระทบต่อสังคมประชาธิปไตย จากการศึกษาพบว่าความเชื่อที่ว่ากระบวนการร่วมไตร่ตรองนั้นเป็นกระบวนการที่เปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนได้มีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมทางการเมืองมากที่สุดนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่ถูกต้อง กระบวนการร่วมไตร่ตรองเองมีกลไกบางประการในที่สร้างเงื่อนไขในการผูกขาดอำนาจซึ่งไม่เป็นผลดีต่อประชาธิปไตย มีข้อเสนอหนึ่งที่มองว่ากระบวนการร่วมไตร่ตรองเป็นกระบวนการที่สมควรหลีกเลี่ยงเพื่อรักษาความเป็นประชาธิปไตยในอุดมคติ หากแต่ผู้เขียนมีความเห็นว่ากระบวนการร่วมไตร่ตรองที่มีความพยายามในการสร้างกระบวนการที่ใช้เหตุผลในฐานของความเสมอภาคและเสรีภาพนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่สมควรแก่การรักษามากกว่าละทิ้งออกจากสังคม โดยแนวคิดรูปแบบการร่วมไตร่ตรองอ้างอิงถึงแนวคิดของ แอนโทนี่ ไซมอน ลาเดน

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์วรรณกรรมแนวฮีโรอิกแฟนตาซีชุด เดอะ มอร์ทอล อินสตรูเมนตส์ ของคาสซานดรา แคลร์ ซึ่งเป็นวรรณกรรมนำเสนอการวิจารณ์แนวคิดที่ปรากฏในพระคัมภีร์ไบเบิล คือการกีดกันด้านเผ่าพันธุ์ ชนชั้น และเพศ อันเป็นแนวคิดที่นำมาสู่การสร้างความรุนแรงในสังคม โดยการใช้ลักษณะของแฟนตาซีสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการวิจารณ์แนวคิดดังกล่าวได้ชัดเจนขึ้น ผลการศึกษาพบว่า วรรณกรรมชุด เดอะ มอร์ทอล อินสตรูเมนตส์ สร้างโลกสมมติเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงการกีดกันและการใช้ความรุนแรงด้านเผ่าพันธุ์ ชนชั้น และเพศ ผ่านตัวละครหลากหลายเผ่าพันธุ์ที่มีสถานะเป็นตัวแทนของคนในสังคม ซึ่งความรุนแรงจากการกีดกันดังกล่าวสร้างบาดแผลทั้งทางกายและจิตใจให้แก่คนในสังคม ซึ่งเป็นบาดแผลจากการสูญเสียคนในครอบครัวและการสูญเสียตัวตน ขณะเดียวกัน วรรณกรรมชุดดังกล่าวยังแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของการเยียวยาบาดแผล อาทิ การเรียนรู้ที่จะยอมรับตัวตนของตนเอง การมอบความรัก ความอบอุ่นแก่คนในคนครอบครัว การสร้างความเข้าใจถึงความแตกต่างในสังคมเพื่อสนับสนุนการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างเท่าเทียมและยอมรับความแตกต่าง

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประเด็นเรื่องเรือนร่างที่ปรากฏในอาชญนิยายร่วมสมัยแนวฆาตกรต่อเนื่องของประเทศอเมริกาและญี่ปุ่นตั้งแต่ปีคริสต์ศักราช 2000 ถึงปัจจุบัน อาชญนิยายของอเมริกาที่คัดสรรมาศึกษาได้แก่เรื่องเดอะ เดธ คอลเลคเตอร์ส์ (The Death Collectors, 2006) ของแจ็ค เคอร์เลย์ (Jack Kerley) มือเพชฌฆาต (The Executioner, 2010) ของคริส คาร์เตอร์ (Chris Carter) และซีรีส์เรื่องฮันนิบาล ปี 1 (Hannibal Season 1, 2013) ของไบรอัน ฟุลเลอร์ (Bryan Fuller) ส่วนอาชญนิยายของญี่ปุ่นได้แก่เรื่องโกธ คดีตัดข้อมือ (2005) ของโอสึอิจิ ราตรีสีเลือด (2008) ของฮนดะ เท็ตสึยะ เลสซัน ออฟ ดิ อีวิล (Lesson of the Evil, 2012) ของมิอิเคะ ทาคาชิ และมิวเซียมเล่ม 1-3 (Museum: The serial killer is laughing in the rain, 2014) ของเรียวสุเกะ โทโมเอะ จากการศึกษาพบว่าตัวบทคัดสรรทั้ง 7 เรื่องได้บรรยายถึงเรือนร่างของตัวละครฆาตกร นักสืบและเหยื่ออย่างละเอียด โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการบรรยายถึงเรือนร่างของเหยื่อนั้นเผยให้เห็นร่างกายที่ถูกกระทำความรุนแรงอย่างน่าสะพรึงกลัวและน่าขยะแขยง ซึ่งแตกต่างจากอาชญนิยายในอดีตที่มักไม่นำเสนอเรือนร่างในลักษณะดังกล่าว การนำเสนอเรือนร่างที่น่ากลัวและน่าขยะแขยงในตัวบทคัดสรรนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการผสมผสานระหว่างลักษณะของอาชญนิยายกับลักษณะของวรรณกรรมแนวโกธิค ซึ่งชี้ให้เห็นประเด็นเกี่ยวกับเรือนร่าง 3 ประเด็นหลักด้วยกัน ได้แก่ประเด็นเรื่องสังคมเมือง ศาสนา และการบริโภค การศึกษาเรือนร่างใน 3 ประเด็นดังกล่าวนี้เผยให้เห็นความคล้ายคลึงกันระหว่างตัวบทของอเมริกาและญี่ปุ่น กล่าวคือตัวบทของทั้งสองประเทศนำเสนอประเด็นเรื่อง "การล่วงล้ำ" (Transgression) ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงการทลายเส้นแบ่งและกรอบเกณฑ์ต่าง ๆ อันเป็นแนวคิดสำคัญอย่างหนึ่งที่มักถูกกล่าวถึงในอาชญนิยาย และเปิดเผยให้เห็น "ความไร้ระเบียบ" (Chaos) อันเป็นลักษณะอย่างหนึ่งของวรรณกรรมแนวโกธิค โดยการล่วงล้ำดังกล่าวแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ด้านด้วยกันได้แก่ การล่วงล้ำระหว่างเพศชายกับหญิง การล่วงล้ำระหว่างภายนอกกับภายในเรือนร่าง และการล่วงล้ำกฎเกณฑ์ของสังคม ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงมุมมองเกี่ยวกับเรือนร่างในสังคมอเมริกาและญี่ปุ่นที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปจากอดีต

การปรับแก้สีภาพถ่ายรอยโรคที่ผิวหนังด้วยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทาโดยใช้แผ่นสีมาตรฐาน, วิศิษฏ์ สมบัติถาวรกุล

งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาอิทธิพลของการตั้งสมดุลแสงขาวในกล้องดิจิทัลต่อความแตกต่างสีภาพถ่ายรอยโรคผิวหนัง ศึกษาผลของการปรับแก้สีด้วยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทาและศึกษาผลการวินิจฉัยของแพทย์ต่อความถูกต้องของสีภาพถ่ายรอยโรคผิวหนังที่ผ่านการปรับแก้สีด้วยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทา กระบวนการวิจัยเริ่มจากสร้างแผ่นสีขึ้นตามแผ่นสีมาตรฐาน X-Rite ColorChecker Classic‎ เพื่อใช้เป็นสีอ้างอิง แล้วใช้กล้องดิจิทัลถ่ายภาพแผ่นสีอ้างอิงนี้โดยตั้งสมดุลแสงขาวแบบ อัตโนมัติ ฟลูออเรสเซนต์ เดย์ไลท์ แฟลช และกำหนดเอง ภายใต้แหล่งแสง 3 ชนิดคือ ฟลูออเรสเซนต์ แฟลชสตูดิโอ และริงแฟลช จากนั้นจึงวิเคราะห์ความแตกต่างสีที่ได้แล้วนำภาพทั้งหมดที่ได้มาปรับแก้สีด้วยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทาโดยใช้แผ่นสีอ้างอิง หลังจากนั้นจึงหาค่าความแตกต่างสีระหว่างภาพก่อนปรับแก้สีกับหลังปรับแก้สี ต่อจากนั้นจึงถ่ายภาพรอยโรคผิวหนังคู่กับแผ่นสีอ้างอิงจำนวน 62 ภาพแล้วนำภาพที่ได้มาปรับแก้สีด้วยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทาต่อจากนั้นให้แพทย์ผิวหนังประเมินภาพโดยมองจากจอคอมพิวเตอร์ที่คาริเบทแล้ว จากผลการทดลองการปรับตั้งสมดุลแสงขาวในกล้องเป็นแบบอัตโนมัติจะให้ผลดีที่สุดและเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับการปรับแก้สีภาพถ่ายโดยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทาแล้วพบว่าได้ค่าความแตกต่างสีเฉลี่ยก่อนปรับแก้เท่ากับ 4.08 หลังจากทำการปรับสมดุลสีเทาได้ค่าความแตกต่างสีเฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 3.67 และจากที่แพทย์ผิวหนังส่วนใหญ่ประเมินภาพได้ให้คะแนนความถูกต้องของสีกับภาพที่ผ่านการปรับแก้สีด้วยการควบคุมสมดุลสีเทา 4.00 คะแนนและภาพที่ไม่ผ่านการปรับแก้สี 3.45 คะแนน

ความสามารถในการเข้าถึงด้านการมองเห็นในที่ทำการไปรษณีย์ของไทยสำหรับคนสายตาเลือนราง, อภิมุข ซุยยะกิจ

กลุ่มคนสายตาเลือนรางมีการมองเห็นด้อยประสิทธิภาพกว่าคนสายตาปกติอย่างมาก ทำให้ขาดความสะดวกและความปลอดภัยในการทำกิจกรรมประจำวันทั้งภายในและภายนอกอาคาร งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อหารูปแบบ ขนาด และสีของลูกศรบอกทิศทางที่เห็นได้ชัดและสื่อความหมายได้ชัดเจนสำหรับผู้ที่มีการมองเห็นเลือนราง เพื่อนำไปใช้ในที่ทำการไปรษณีย์ไทย งานวิจัยได้ออกแบบลูกศร 8 แบบ ให้ผู้สังเกตที่มีสายตาปกติสวมใส่แว่นตาจำลองการมองเห็นเลือนราง 3 ชนิด ได้แก่ การมองเห็นแบบลานสายตาแคบ (NV) ที่ให้ค่าลานสายตา 10 องศา การมองเห็นแบบตามัว (BL) และการมองเห็นเลือนรางเนื่องมาจากหลอดเลือดจอประสาทตาอุดตัน (OLS) ที่ให้ค่าสายตา 0.04 ขั้นแรกให้ผู้สังเกตจำนวน 20 คนเลือกแบบลูกศรที่สังเกตได้ชัดเจนและสื่อสารบอกทิศทางได้ดีที่สุด โดยได้ลูกศรแบบที่ 1 จากนั้นนำลูกศรที่ได้มาปรับการนำเสนอด้วยสีแดง สีเขียว สีน้ำเงินและสีเหลือง ตามที่ระบุในมาตรฐานผลิตภัณฑ์อุตสาหกรรมสีและเครื่องหมายเพื่อความปลอดภัย เลขที่ มอก. 635-2554 และออกแบบให้เป็นพอสิทิฟ และเนกาทิฟ และนำไปหาขนาดที่เหมาะสมที่ทำให้คนสายตาเลือนรางทั้ง 3 แบบมองเห็นได้ชัดเจน พบว่ามีขนาด 5.5 องศาเมื่อมองห่างจากภาพลูกศร 1 เมตร จากนั้นเพิ่มจำนวนแบบโดยเพิ่มขอบเครื่องหมายลูกศรรวม 8 แบบให้ผู้สังเกตระบุทิศทางและบันทึกเวลาตอบสนอง ผลที่ได้ถูกนำไปจำลองวางบนภาพที่ถ่ายจากที่ทำการไปรษณีย์จริง ตรวจสอบระยะเวลาการตอบสนองของลูกศรเปรียบเทียบกันระหว่างในกลุ่มผู้สังเกตที่สายตามีความคมชัดน้อยกว่า 0.05 กับสายตาปกติที่สวมแว่นตาจำลอง และกลุ่มผู้สังเกตที่มีสายตาเลือนรางกับสายตาปกติที่สวมแว่นตาจำลอง ซึ่งพบว่าผู้สังเกตสายตาเลือนรางมีการตอบสนองต่อลูกศรไวกว่าผู้สังเกตสายตาปกติที่สวมแว่นตาจำลองและ ผู้สังเกตสายตามีความคมชัดน้อยกว่า 0.05 ตามลำดับ โดยผู้สังเกตสายตาเลือนรางตอบสนองต่อกลุ่มลูกศรสีน้ำเงินได้ดีกว่าลูกศรในกลุ่มสีอื่น

The Anti-Imperialism Of Ottobah Cugoano: Slavery, Abolition, And Colonialism In Thoughts And Sentiments On The Evil Of Slavery, Tacuma Peters

This article argues that the work of Ottobah Cugoano provides readers with a robust anti-imperial analysis of European modernity. For Cugoano, slavery and colonialism are coeval and mutually constitutive processes. I argue that Cugoano’s Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery which has been accepted as a tract of radical abolitionism should also be interpreted as an anti-imperial text. I contend that we must attend to the global scope of Cugoano’s anti-imperialism which includes critiques of European colonialism in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as provides recommendations for radical changes in the relationship between Europe and …

Speech varies widely in the American South, but the region is argued to share features including monophthongization of upgliding diphthongs, convergence of certain front vowels via raising and lowering, and back-vowel fronting. We investigate the influence of speaker sex and ethnicity on vowel production using data from the Digital Archive of Southern Speech. This corpus of 64 linguistic interviews (372 hours, recorded 1968–1983) offers large amounts of data from individual speakers, whose semi-spontaneous nature reveals a more realistic portrait of phonetic variability than is typically available. This research explores the lived experiences of South Asians college students. This research, through a qualitative study that is rooted in the philosophy of phenomenology, explores the essence South Asians’ identity formation. Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with South Asian college students. The data analysis was under a phenomenological lens that centered the lived experiences and the essence of these experiences in the results. Throughout history, skin manipulation was primarily practiced for cultural, tribal, or religious purposes. In the contemporary landscape, skin manipulation has been objectified and commercialized. This is exemplified through bio-upholstery, foreign materials under our skin and changing the skin structure.

This paper examines the role of enslaved craftsmen in Charleston cabinetmaking shops during the late-eighteenth century and how wealthy Charlestonians’ desire fashionable goods fueled the demand for this labor force. The first chapter examines the rise of the wealthy Charlestonians and the origins of their taste for fashionable goods. The second chapter explores the increased use of enslaved craftsmen in Charleston cabinetmaking shops during the last half of the eighteenth century and how they affected the production of fashionable cabinet goods.

Do inventions that exist only on paper have less credibility than functional technologies? How has the meaning and significance of audiovisual media and technology changed over time? This dissertation examines historiography and methodology for media history, arguing for an interdisciplinary approach. It addresses methodological issues in media history—media in transition, media archaeology, and film history—through an examination of television’s speculative era. Through the lens of the horror film and the fairy tale, this thesis explores the notion of the grotesque as a boundary phenomenon—a negotiation of what is self and what is other. As such, it locates the function that the monstrous and the grotesque have in the formation of a personal and social identity. In asking why we take pleasure in the perverse, I explore how permutations of guilt, victimhood, and desire can be actively rewritten, in order to construct a stable sense of self.

It seems that all forms of pain, quotidian and monumental, are catalogued in the same muted and inaccessible space in our memory. In my installation Wiped Clean, I question whether human capacity to externalize physical trauma is aided by a the physical design of our institutions.
