Rhapsode Metaphor: Understanding The Student-Teacher Relationship In Philosophy For Children, Ryan Dougherty

This thesis examines some of the different kinds of metaphors employed in our pedagogical practices. By using the Four Pillars of Philosophy for Children, an alternative metaphor for teaching philosophy is put forth as a viable alternative to the traditional options. This is what we can reasonably call the Rhapsode Metaphor.

American commerce, however, was plagued by a number of commercial problems. Solving these commercial problems facilitated an interest in science and the practical arts as engineers, inventors, mechanics, public officials, and everyday tinkerers innovated new apparatuses to preserve, promote, and protect American commerce. My dissertation is a comparative study of the plantation landscape in South Carolina, Barbados, and Virginia between 1670 and 1820 that explores how the built environment (landscape, architecture, and material culture) shaped interactions between enslaved people and free, white workers and slaveholders. Instead of simply the home of the planter class, the plantation house was more than a living space or a work space; it was a workshop for the creation of a distinctly American culture.

This project focuses on the cultural transformation taking place in Spain in the period between 1962 and 1976, examined through the works of filmmaker Jordi Grau (Barcelona, 1930). This research invites the opportunity to assemble a cultural study that includes subjects such as national identity, realist film aesthetics, avant-garde films, and horror films. In addition, it observes some of Grau’s work in conjunction with gender studies and pop culture.

In the collected dialogues of Plato, Plato sets out his arguments on democracy, power, and free-will through Socrates’ interactions with his interlocutors. His understandings of morality and justice suggest that a good and moral person is the foundation for successful societies. In The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and other tales, Tolkien offers a different lens through which to observe philosophical and ethical concepts. Plato’s morality is centered around the organization and the structure of the soul. The soul is ruled by virtues which include justice and knowledge. This dissertation analyses the origin and evolution of the war narrative that was unleashed between the years 1980 and 2000 in Peru against the terrorist groups Shining Path and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA). My thesis is that the internal war novel is a resulting genre whose precursor was the pro-indigenista novels from the last decades of the 20th Century. In searching for a modern nation, Chinese women, in many political and literary works, were portrayed as both the emblem of China’s problems and the crucial solution. Despite growing scholarly interest in the entanglement between Chinese nationalist and feminist discourses, much remains to be explored, especially from the perspective of how Chinese people approached their own past and tradition. This dissertation examines poetry of Daʿd Ḥadād, Sanieh Ṣālḥ, and Ryāḍ Ṣālḥ al- Ḥsīn and the dominant role of place in their poetry. My dissertation is specifically interested in nonconformist modern Syrian poetry, especially women’s poetry and poetry focused on place and space. I approach my analysis from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective and hence will draw on theoretical frameworks from Arabic studies, poetry discourse, and theory of place. This thesis catalogs a portion of the Wigger Collection of British Watercolors at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina. The 48 entries featured here represent a range of watercolorists active in the mid-eighteenth century through the middle of the nineteenth century in Great Britain. Bequeathed to the Museum in 2004, this collection has remained largely un-researched, until now. This catalog begins to document and examine the professional and personal relationships between the artists represented. Flannery O’Connor described herself as “a Catholic peculiarly possessed of a modern consciousness” (HB 90). What makes her such a fascinating author is that she was almost uncannily sensitive to what Charles Taylor has analyzed in his large study A Secular Age as the fraught spiritual cross-currents of late modernity. Decades before Taylor described the modern secular social imaginary as a haunted space, O’Connor wrote in an essay that “if the South is hardly Christ-centered, it is most certainly Christhaunted” (MM 44). When Harvard College built their business school curriculum around case studies and discussion-based classrooms in the early 1900s, it created a radical shift in business school pedagogy throughout the nation due to its ability to prepare students for careers in industry. As case study pedagogy spread to other fields throughout the 20th century, such as medical education and the sciences, these fields extended Harvard's approach in order to create highly effective, field-specific pedagogies. This historical non-fiction novel aims to relate the events concerning the settlement of Floreana Island in the Galápagos Archipelago in the early 1930's by European ex-pats. The events related are entirely based in fact, informed by the accounts of a variety of different sources with personal knowledge to the events. In the early 19th century, the Arkansas River Valley existed as a borderlands region of powerful Indian nations and immigrant Euro-American and Native American settlers. In the resulting contests over settlement, Cherokee chiefs recreated the Arkansas Cherokees' ecological identity from hunters to agrarians to differentiate themselves from their Osage and white rivals. During the 1820s, Cherokee chiefs expanded on their agrarian rhetoric by appropriating American scientific systems in order to stymie white settlement. By the end of the 1820s, Arkansas Cherokee chiefs had infused their arguments of preferred agricultural lands, appropriate survey methods, and accurate cartography into the debates over …

This dissertation analyzes discourses concerning odor within the Atlantic World from approximately 1492 until 1838. Numerous historians and philosophers have described how the Reformation’s emphasis on texts and an increased concentration on visual science during the Enlightenment influenced Western Europeans to heighten the importance of the eye to the detriment of the lower sense of smell. This dissertation begins by thinking about materialist contours of this olfactory decline through a linguistic analysis of sulfur within seventeenth century England. It then proceeds to examine how in the early Americas such a repudiation of the sense of smell did not occur. The …

This work explores the figure of the witch as seen in traditional Galician folklore and in relation to female empowerment and traditional representations of women. It follows two women throughout two distinct timelines (1940s and 1980s) in the region of Galicia, northwest of Spain. The narrative also examines the relationship between social and institutional power, as well as the ways in which folklore can shed light on timeless topics such as gender relations and a community’s interactions with the supernatural.

In part because some historians are ethically opposed to their avocation, sport hunters of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era are an understudied group. As environmental actors, they have been virtually ignored. Based on the biological traits of their quarry, one particular subset of sportsmen, waterfowl hunters, were especially disposed to manipulating the environment in which they hunted. Their efforts to attract migratory waterfowl to privately owned wetlands through habitat management, which started nearly a half-century before federal engineers and biologists undertook similar work on the national wildlife refuges in the 1930s, were pioneering. Elsewhere, Then is a cross-generational road novel that traces the sociopolitical and personal narrative of a family through a musician making her way from Savannah to San Francisco. Traditional road narratives have long depicted the lone female traveller as being subject to violence when stepping outside the domestic sphere, which echoes history's larger and pervasive trend of denying women agency through silence and subjugation—in life, as in stories. The novel interrogates how (and by whom) narratives are created, embellished, changed, and/or discarded through the narrator's temporal and spatial journey.
