The Ecological Crisis: Questioning Christianity’S Contribution, Jessica Bolak
The Ecological Crisis: Questioning Christianity’S Contribution, Jessica Bolak
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Introduction
Distinguished academic, Lynn White, claims that the Judeo-Christian religions are to blame for the ecological crisis and uses interpretations from the Bible to support his argument. He believes these religions have a harmful impact on the relationship between humans and nature. In this paper I will examine White’s claims specifically against Christianity, and refute them by providing multiple perspectives from varying scholars to substantiate my argument."
Global Warming And Religion, Erin Tiede
Global Warming And Religion, Erin Tiede
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Introduction
John A. Grim and Mary Evelyn Tucker argue that it is the responsibility for religious people and organizations to combat the environmental crises, including global warming. David C. Barker and David H. Bearce, however, describe the end-times belief that some Christians follow which leads many to disregard the current effects of the ecological crises. I will support the views of Grim and Tucker as well as discuss the current responses toward the ecological crises."
The Building Blocks Of My Faith, Sabina Clark
The Building Blocks Of My Faith, Sabina Clark
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"From the time I was an infant, my family has been immersed in the Catholic Church and its faith. Our Church, St. Mary’s, always left me in awe with the sun shining through the stained glass windows and the larger than life statues of religious pioneers smiling down upon me. I was baptized, confirmed, and attended Sunday school at St. Mary’s and I believe that this strongly molded me into the person I am today. By also attending a Catholic school for eleven years, I feel as though this …
A Note On The Jewish Tanak And The Christian Old Testament, John W. Fadden
A Note On The Jewish Tanak And The Christian Old Testament, John W. Fadden
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"In my introductory courses it is not uncommon for students to assume that Jews and Christians share the Old Testament. These students are surprised when I state that Jews have their own canon that is often called the Tanak and that Christians are the ones with the canon called the Old Testament.1 While the canons may contain the same books, the practices and meanings of these communities in relation to the books result in two distinct canons."
Irving Singer (1925-2015), Tim Madigan
Irving Singer (1925-2015), Tim Madigan
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"The noted philosopher and Santayana scholar Irving Singer, author of the magisterial three-volume work The Nature of Love, died on February 1, 2015, aged 89. Singer was born in Brooklyn on December 24, 1925, and served in World War II. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard in 1948, under the G.I. Bill. The following year he wed Josephine Fisk, an opera singer with whom he had four children. They spent a year at Oxford (1949-1950), during which time Singer read The Last Puritan and in 1950 took a …

How Can Different People All Fight The Same Battle If They Seem To Have Nothing In Common, Ray Rosier
How Can Different People All Fight The Same Battle If They Seem To Have Nothing In Common, Ray Rosier
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Modern day America is a reflection of many different histories. All different, unique, and significant, yet they all belong to us whether we are directly affected or not. The trials different groups of people face today are the same trials once faced by the millions of Americans who preceded us. Today’s women and men can fight together for rights that are much more than skin deep and connect them all regardless of race. How can different people all fight the same battle if they seem to have nothing in …
Geologists And The British Raj, 1870-1910, Aja B. Tolman
Geologists And The British Raj, 1870-1910, Aja B. Tolman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The British Raj (1858-1947) hired geologists from both India and Great Britain to find valuable resources in India, such as coal. The geologists worked to convince the government to enact policy changes regarding museum ownership, conservation, railway construction, education, and industrialization. But the geologists had different goals based on whether they were Indian or European. The Indian geologists wanted India’s independence from Britain, so their education and industrial policy proposals were geared towards making India self-sufficient and globally competitive. The British geologists’ goal was to enrich the empire. The British were able to convince the government to accept most of …
West Point Of The West: A History Of The Department Of Military Science At Utah State University, Camon Davison
West Point Of The West: A History Of The Department Of Military Science At Utah State University, Camon Davison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Department of the Military Science at Utah State University was created in 1898 and is the oldest department at USU. Until the mid-1950s it was mandatory that all male students be enrolled in Military training at the school and, if they so decided, would finish up the last two years of military training to become officers in the United States Military. This program is known as ROTC. Fully implemented at USU in 1916 the ROTC program continued to grow and would help fund the growth of campus during the 1920’s and 30’s. Following World War II the program became …
From Crisis To Crisis: A Big Data, Antenarrative Analysis Of How Social Media Users Make Meaning During And After Crisis Events, Adam R. Bair
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Crisis events are now common, ranging from computer errors, which might cause only minor inconvenience, to floods, which can cause loss of life and significant property damage. Such events can affect people’s ability to pay bills, trust food sources, or deal with events that could impact the environment and lives for decades. Understanding how crisis information is presented to audiences, how these audiences interpret and respond to a crisis will help researchers develop new approaches to improve communication among and with people affected by crisis.
To understand how individuals make sense of crisis events, I applied David Boje’s theories and …
Europa's Bane Ethnic Conflict And Economics On The Czechoslovak Path From Nationalism To Communism, 1848-1948, Mathias Fuelling
Europa's Bane Ethnic Conflict And Economics On The Czechoslovak Path From Nationalism To Communism, 1848-1948, Mathias Fuelling
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ethnic conflict and its relationship with economics is a difficult subject to understand, both for moral and historical reasons. This thesis was written with a mind to the effects of these forces on the functioning of political systems. Through study of the Habsburg empire it was discovered that industrialization and competition over economic opportunities drove speakers of different languages to establish themselves as distinct ethnic communities who held conflict between each other as a virtue. This conflict and the creation of a nationalist narrative by communities of Czechs and Germans contributed to the breakup of the Habsburg empire. Conceptions of …
What In A Good Cause Men May Both Dare And Venture, Karen Schwarze
What In A Good Cause Men May Both Dare And Venture, Karen Schwarze
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this thesis, I present a short story in the historical fiction genre. I researched the plight of Bavarian schoolteachers during the 1848 revolution and integrated this historical information into the story. The Cultural Minister at the time, Karl von Abel, had instituted strict measures against schoolteachers. For example, they were forbidden to read certain books (a key element in the story), attend taverns, and meet outside of regulated teachers conferences. Teachers also were denied civil servant status, which meant that no pension was available to them.
In my short story, the main character, Franz Schuler, must decide whether or …
The Bat And The Spider: A Folkloristic Analysis Of Comic Book Narratives, Wesley Colin Van De Water
The Bat And The Spider: A Folkloristic Analysis Of Comic Book Narratives, Wesley Colin Van De Water
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis examines the folkloric evolution of superhero narratives over the past century. Utilizing theories from folklorists such as Lord Raglan, Vladimir Propp, Joseph Campbell, Barre Toelken, and Alan Dundes, it examines the core qualities prized by folklorists, and how these same elements can be found in superhero narratives, despite their mass produced nature and place amidst American popular culture. It examines classic hero tale structures, as well as the folkloric theories of dynamism and conservatism. The main argument is that these narratives are folkloric in nature, and that the discipline of folklore would benefit from their study.
The Art Of Devotion: Style, Culture, And Practice In Mid-Nineteenth-Century Kashmir, Nina Cavazos
The Art Of Devotion: Style, Culture, And Practice In Mid-Nineteenth-Century Kashmir, Nina Cavazos
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Largely produced in the Kashmir Valley during the mid-nineteenth century, gutkas are pocket-sized anthologies of texts, hymns, and prayers that a Hindu would recite in a sacred place in the home, usually near an altar. In the past, these objects have been relegated to the periphery of art historical discourse due to scholarly discriminations against their unrefined, "folk" characteristics. However, despite the lack of academic interest, a critical study of gutka culture provides the ideal viewpoint from which to explore South Asian art history, cultural history, and historical Hindu practices. Although these objects were often left unsigned by their illiterate …
Considering The Crossroads Of Distance Education: The Experiences Of Instructors As They Transitioned To Online Or Blended Courses, David D. Hoffman
Considering The Crossroads Of Distance Education: The Experiences Of Instructors As They Transitioned To Online Or Blended Courses, David D. Hoffman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the short history of online education research, researchers studying teacher experiences regularly relied on anecdotal examples or small samples. In this research, we sought to support and enhance previous findings concerning the best practices in online education by performing randomly sampled, nationwide survey of online and blended course instructors. The survey inquired about demographics (such as age, race, and gender), professional position (i.e. tenured professor), institution, department, and their initial and current feelings about teaching online education. It questioned if the respondents studied online as students, what resources administrators provided, their audience, length of instructional experience, and personal behaviors …
"Reasonably Bright Girls": Theorizing Women's Agency In Technological Systems Of Power, Emily January Petersen
"Reasonably Bright Girls": Theorizing Women's Agency In Technological Systems Of Power, Emily January Petersen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A woman’s experience in the workplace is an inductive process into a technological, hierarchical, and often male-dominated system. This study examines how female practitioners in technical and professional communication confront the technological system of the workplace. I trace the forces that contribute to the hierarchy and power struggles women face, I present how they claim authority and agency within such hierarchical and technological systems, and I show how these experiences can lead to activism and advocacy. In addition, my findings suggest that some women leave the workplace altogether in favor of less structured and more innovative ways of communicating about …
A Watchman On The Walls: Ezekiel And Reaction To Invasion In Anglo-Saxon England, Max K. Brinson
A Watchman On The Walls: Ezekiel And Reaction To Invasion In Anglo-Saxon England, Max K. Brinson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the Viking Age, the Christian Anglo-Saxons in England found warnings and solace in the biblical text of Ezekiel. In this text, the God of Israel delivers a dual warning: first, the sins of the people call upon themselves divine wrath; second, it is incumbent upon God’s messenger to warn the people of their extreme danger, or else find their blood on his hands. This thesis examines how the Anglo-Saxon applied Ezekiel’s warnings to their own cultural crisis. It begins with the early development of this philosophy by the Britons in the 500s, its adoption by the Anglo-Saxons, Irish, and …
Journey, Darren Alan Rainey
Journey, Darren Alan Rainey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Journey is not about a particular journey, it is more about images or moments from within a journey. The interpretation for what this means is left up to the performers and listeners; however, I view this as one person not particularly achieving what they set out to achieve. It all began with a rough start, moments of happiness, playfulness, contempt and contemplation, but in the end it wasn't the expected outcome of the journey. The work plays between moments of vigor, aggitation, playfulness, light-heartedness, comfort and relaxation. Expression markings are described above each area of the work. These descriptions help …
Bolling V. Sharpe And Beyond: The Unfinished And Untold History Of School Desegregation In Washington, D.C., Bryce Celotto
Bolling V. Sharpe And Beyond: The Unfinished And Untold History Of School Desegregation In Washington, D.C., Bryce Celotto
Honors College Theses
While the Brown V. Board of Education case is constantly referenced when discussing educational equity and desegregation, Bolling v. Sharpe stands as another important education civil rights case and is perhaps more telling of the story of education in the United States. Bolling V. Sharpe was argued and decided in the United States Supreme Court over the course of 1952 to 1954. Similar to Brown v. Board in terms of intent, Bolling v. Sharpe aimed to desegregate public schools in Washington, D.C. in order to give African-American students equal access to a high quality public education on par with that …
The Impact Of A Supplemental Reading Intervention On The Literacy Skills Of English Language Learners And Native English-Speaking First Grade Children, Theresa Marie Dussling
The Impact Of A Supplemental Reading Intervention On The Literacy Skills Of English Language Learners And Native English-Speaking First Grade Children, Theresa Marie Dussling
Dissertations - ALL
A growing body of research has shown that interventions originally developed to help monolingual students with early reading skills offer the type of instruction necessary and effective for English language learners as well. While the research on effective early reading interventions for English language learners is expanding, the majority of the research focuses on students whose native language is Spanish. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a supplemental reading program that emphasizes phoneme awareness and phonics with small groups of both native English-speakers and ELLs whose first language is not Spanish. This study utilized …
Whose Honey, Whose Hive?: Genre And Rhetorical Agency In The U.S. Colony Collapse Disorder, W. Kurt Stavenhagen
Whose Honey, Whose Hive?: Genre And Rhetorical Agency In The U.S. Colony Collapse Disorder, W. Kurt Stavenhagen
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation analyzes the rhetoric surrounding the environmental crisis of the honey bee Colony Collapse Disorder, commonly known as CCD. Since 2007, the United States has lost on average a third of its honey bee colonies each year to CCD. The crisis has potentially serious environmental consequences. Without honey bee pollination services, over $14 billion worth of crops in the United States alone are in jeopardy. Drawing on environmental rhetoric, genre theory, and agricultural rhetorics, I offer a rhetorical analysis and genre analysis of the narratives surrounding CCD from select popular press newspaper articles, documentaries, nonfiction works, and personal interviews …
Illustrations Of Child Anxiety, Erica G. O'Connell
Illustrations Of Child Anxiety, Erica G. O'Connell
Senior Honors Projects
I have found through my experience at The University of Rhode Island that two things are lacking; attention to the arts, and conversation about mental illness. Books are not only used as an educational tool for literacy among children but also as a way to introduce challenging topics. Combining my two majors, Art and Psychology, I aimed to create a real life tool that exposes children to the topic of mental health. The targeted age group for this book is between 4 through 6 years. By introducing this conversation to children at an appropriate level of learning, my hope is …
Representing Propaganda: Anti-Tyrannical Art Of The Greek, Roman, And French Populist Agendas, Katherine Norgard
Representing Propaganda: Anti-Tyrannical Art Of The Greek, Roman, And French Populist Agendas, Katherine Norgard
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
History is often shaped to fit certain agendas. Regular, flawed individuals become heroes and martyrs. The truth is often more complicated, as proven by the fact that Harmodios and Aristogeiton gained their fame by publicly slaughtering a well-liked ruler for encroaching on their pederastic relationship, Brutus gained his fame by murdering Julius Caesar for getting too close to his mother (and sister), and Jean-Paul Marat was exalted and worshiped for violence-inciting journalism.
Harmodios, Brutus, and Jean Paul Marat all serve as symbols of equalitarianism. Their public portrayals were crafted to be symbols that fit the [needs of] revolutionary agendas. As …
History Of Housewives In First-Year Composition And Effects On Students, Pay, And Pedagogy, Vera Lynn Lentini
History Of Housewives In First-Year Composition And Effects On Students, Pay, And Pedagogy, Vera Lynn Lentini
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis paper reviews the history of women in the field of composition as a discipline, paying particular attention to the evolution of the role of the writing instructor. Today, first-year composition classrooms are staffed by a mostly contingent and female workforce, which is an ethical problem for writing programs and English departments. As in the larger workforce, service-oriented careers like teaching tend to be underpaid and characterized by deference to the experts, who are in the position of authority. While this scheme seems to have functioned for housewives and breadwinners in the 1950s, in today’s dual-earner couple it is …
