Creating 3d Smear Frames For Animation, Matthew R. Drury May 2016

Creating 3d Smear Frames For Animation, Matthew R. Drury

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the transition between 2D and 3D animation animators tried to be able to replicate all of the styles and techniques in 3D that they utilized in 2D. Motion blur eventually came to replace a popular 2D technique known as a smear frame. A smear frame is much more than a path of motion or a blur though, it has a style that cannot be replicated with such methods. I present a creative project with the intent on creating 3D smear frames in a self-made character rig. In order to achieve this I will be designing, modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, …

Transforming The Mundane: Juxtaposing Maria Friedman’S "High Society" With George Cukor’S "The Philadelphia Story" As An Emphasis On The Importance Of Theatre, Dana T. Speight Ms. May 2016

Transforming The Mundane: Juxtaposing Maria Friedman’S "High Society" With George Cukor’S "The Philadelphia Story" As An Emphasis On The Importance Of Theatre, Dana T. Speight Ms.

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The subjects of film and theatre belong to an extensive hierarchical debate that has remained prominent within the realm of performing arts since the introduction of cinema in the late nineteenth century. A plethora of scholars choose to argue in favor of the former, suggesting that film surpasses theatre as superior in both aesthetics and overall execution of naturalism; however, the argument is purely subjective and cannot be applied to all films and their corresponding plays. As a counterclaim, theatre continues to thrive as a prominent source of artistic entertainment globally, not only offering a contemporary twist to preexisting texts, …

Applied Anatomy In Music: Body Mapping For Trumpeters, Micah Holt May 2016

Applied Anatomy In Music: Body Mapping For Trumpeters, Micah Holt

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Musicians must move in order to produce sound. The body is the vehicle for movement, therefore, understanding the body structure can provide more effortless and efficient music making. The conceptual creators of Body Mapping, Barbara and William Conable, define a body map as, “One’s self-representation in one’s own brain.” Body Mapping provides a relatively new somatic approach to musical pedagogy. A number of existing dissertations and articles discuss the specific application of Body Mapping to keyboard, voice and woodwind instruments. Currently, however, very few resources have integrated Body Mapping into brass pedagogy. With this document I intend to provide a …

Yiddish Diction In Singing, Carrie Suzanne Schuster-Wachsberger May 2016

Yiddish Diction In Singing, Carrie Suzanne Schuster-Wachsberger

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The standard for classical singers in the United States to be trained in the singing diction of the German, Italian, and English languages. This sung diction varies from the spoken diction for those languages and is therefore important for singers to study in classes dedicated to singing language pronunciation. Literature is also available for the instruction in the singing diction of numerous other languages including Latin, Spanish, Czech, Russian, and Hebrew. While there is a vast scope of languages represented by vocal diction guides, there is no available singing diction guide for Yiddish songs, despite the spectrum of classical vocal …

Heaven On Their Minds, Rebecca Kate Robison May 2016

Heaven On Their Minds, Rebecca Kate Robison

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Heaven on Their Minds is a novel written from the first-person perspective of teenage

protagonist Melody O’Malley. The plot details Melody’s attempt, along with two close friends, to undermine their conservative Christian theater camp’s summer production of Godspell via the edgier songs and theology of Jesus Christ Superstar. Though ostensibly a satire of the Evangelical Christian community, Melody’s insecurities are the true heart of the novel--her fraught relationship with her best friends, her concerns about her post-high school future, and her ill-advised crush on the most prominent RFC (Robot for Christ) in the camp, a crush that has terrible consequences …

Love On - The Life Of A Suicide Survivor: A Performance Autoethnographic Study, Patricia R. Wheeler May 2016

Love On - The Life Of A Suicide Survivor: A Performance Autoethnographic Study, Patricia R. Wheeler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Suicide touches the lives of millions of people each year in this country alone, yet conversations about suicide loss and survival after a loss remain taboo and often do not happen. The story I performed for this performance autoethnographic study centers on my life as a survivor of suicide. It provides a starting point for dialog regarding trauma, grief, and suicide loss. The narrative was constructed directly following the sudden death of my father, which had a direct effect on my ability to produce artistic work. The development, staging and performance of the story were altered to account for the …

Recalculating: Navigating In Mediated Spaces, Jessica Tzu-Ying Huang May 2016

Recalculating: Navigating In Mediated Spaces, Jessica Tzu-Ying Huang

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the navigable surface of media interfaces as a site of engagement and experimentation – for creating experiences that highlight or subvert the spatial and temporal orientations to which we have become accustomed. An interface often erases the traces of its functioning between user and content, however I am interested in probing this exchange of relations. I look at the threshold as a site, exposing and what happens when the mediation is made visible. Screen and page become performative spaces for enacting perceptions of time, gesture, tactility, scale, and for formal outcomes to arise.

Form, Content, And Form As Content, Bon Hae Koo May 2016

Form, Content, And Form As Content, Bon Hae Koo

Masters Theses

Form, Content, and Form as Content demonstrates form as a tool of communication used to explore the role of aesthetics, play, and order in giving form to design. This thesis maps the journey of an aesthetic critic who makes visible and explicit the structures and symbolic meaning valued in the graphic forms we experience.

The practice draws upon the properties of the kaleidoscope, rearranging form to produce new content that questions the reliability of standards, from corporate ranking to color palette trending. Bearing witness to culture, I closely observe and highlight identities and trends that command high stakes in culture. …

Over Several Networks: Designing Intimate Technologies, Sarah Jean Recht May 2016

Over Several Networks: Designing Intimate Technologies, Sarah Jean Recht

Masters Theses

Digital dualism, a term coined by Nathan Jurgenson in 2012, suggests that there is a divide between physical off-line and digital on-line realities. With the influence of social media on how people network there is a shift in how we understand this play between realities. Jurgenson believes that the divide is, in fact, a fallacy. Boundaries between the physical and digital are fluid and overlapping. We are working out a new spatial paradigm and system of exchange.

This thesis takes as its focus how our bodies are interpreted and reformed continuously in relation to the network and the discourse. Putting …

Intertwined Pluralities: Designing In The Third Space, Sarah Mohammaddi May 2016

Intertwined Pluralities: Designing In The Third Space, Sarah Mohammaddi

Masters Theses

I designed my thesis book to reflect the inquiry at hand—a non-linear, fragmented narrative that can be observed in multiple perspectives. I welcome viewers to read in a traditional manner, following the Contents page as displayed, or engage in a new read of the material by navigating the book using the Live Index.

Yellow pages on the left side display a collection of running quotes from Homi Bhabha's most recent lecture, Translation and Displacement where he spoke of the role of the translator within a multi-centered culture. These quotes can be read in sequential order or in relationship to the …

Graffiti Art And Professional Communication: Where Art And Communication Conventions Converge And Diverge, Rebekah Miner May 2016

Graffiti Art And Professional Communication: Where Art And Communication Conventions Converge And Diverge, Rebekah Miner

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This thesis describes professionals in the areas of art and professional communication and their text and interview discussions of the professional presence of graffiti art influence in social media, marketing, and advertising. A review of these interviews coupled with field research creates a third space of professional communication where graffiti art becomes it's own genre of art and communication when used professionally. I will describe the contexts of art, professional communication, and graffiti art; their differences and discourse from professional interviewees on the subject, and the explanation of a new third space-or genre-of professional communication through graffiti art.

A Triangular Bargain: Narration And Power In Margaret Atwood’S The Blind Assassin And Alias Grace, Alyssa Michelle Quinn May 2016

A Triangular Bargain: Narration And Power In Margaret Atwood’S The Blind Assassin And Alias Grace, Alyssa Michelle Quinn

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This thesis analyzes reader-writer relationships in two novels by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin and Alias Grace. The plots of both these novels revolve around scenes of storytelling, in which tensions arise between the narrator and her audience. In The Blind Assassin, the elderly protagonist tells her granddaughter the truth about their family's past in an effort to achieve redemption. In Alias Grace, a convicted murderess tells her story to a psychiatrist who hopes to prove either her guilt or innocence. In my thesis, I examine how each of these narrative relationships reflects the relative …

Under Cover: An Exploration Of Book Cover Design And Reader Perception Of The Text, Maria Williams May 2016

Under Cover: An Exploration Of Book Cover Design And Reader Perception Of The Text, Maria Williams

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I am double majoring in graphic design and English and in doing so, am interested in studying the view of book cover design in both disciplines. This is partly a continuation of an Honors contract I did with Bob Winward in Fall 2015 when I designed multiple book covers. In this contract, a major aspect that determined whether a cover design was successful or not was whether the design was "true" to the text in the book. A literary critic, as opposed to a graphic designer who creates the cover, is given a book (and therefore a cover) and thus …

A Book Of Conversations: Trauma, Representation, And Reconstruction In Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, Rachel Telfer May 2016

A Book Of Conversations: Trauma, Representation, And Reconstruction In Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, Rachel Telfer

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

For over 150 years, critics and readers have struggled to understand the meaning of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Through Alice, Carroll asserts that a focus on conversations in Wonderland will illuminate the use, or value, of his novel. The conversations between Alice and other characters reveal that Alice experiences a breakdown of her reality that mirrors the symptoms of trauma. Thus, looking through Alice's deconstructive process through the lens of trauma can provide insight into the value of Carroll's novel. Yet the novel does not describe a known source of trauma. Instead of emphasizing the traumatic event …

Burlesque Of The Herbivore: Ovid's Comic Pythagoras In Met. 15, Alex M. Tarbet May 2016

Burlesque Of The Herbivore: Ovid's Comic Pythagoras In Met. 15, Alex M. Tarbet

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Pythagoras' speech at the climax of Metamorphoses (15.60-478) has frustrated all attempts to pin it down. To many it seems playfully vacuous, a harmless intellectual exhibition. Mack, for instance, calls it "vehement and impassioned...but signifying little." Solodow argues that it does not have "any special significance in itself nor lends any to the poem as a whole." Little sees only "superficial correspondence with [Ovid's] subject matter." Particularly troublesome is its culminating injunction to "empty the mouth of meats and choose harmless foods " (ora vacent epulis alimentaque mitia carpant! 478), which seems not only out of place in the …

Understanding The Mormon War Of 1838, Tabitha Merkley May 2016

Understanding The Mormon War Of 1838, Tabitha Merkley

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For my thesis I decided to do a literature review about the 1838 Mormon War in Missouri. The Mormons started settling in Missouri in 1831 because Joseph Smith told his followers that Jackson County was set aside as the place where they would establish Zion. Almost right away there were conflicts between the Missourians and the Mormons. The Missourians were suspicious of the Mormons and their beliefs because the Mormons had told Missourians that God was going to take the land away from the Missourians and give the land to the Mormons. As a result of these suspicions, the Mormons …

Movements, Music, And Meaning: A Comparative Analysis Of Cultural Narratives In Vietnam Era And Post-9/11 Anti-War Music, Jonathan Nathaniel Redman May 2016

Movements, Music, And Meaning: A Comparative Analysis Of Cultural Narratives In Vietnam Era And Post-9/11 Anti-War Music, Jonathan Nathaniel Redman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the presence of widely circulating cultural narratives in the lyrics of approximately eighty anti-war songs from the Vietnam and post-9/11 eras. Unlike prior movements and music research, this thesis privileges culture over movements and views movements as cultural antennae both picking up on trends and cultural narratives, and broadcasting their own altered cultural meanings back into the “cultural airways.” It sees music as a cultural medium which acquires cultural meanings from its surroundings, alters those meanings, synthesizes new ones, and perpetuates old ones. Drawing on comparative and narrative analysis approaches informed by grounded theory techniques, this thesis …

In my hometown, Auburn, NY, heroin has taken the lives of many members of the community and continues to threaten lives every day. While this issue has brought great tragedy, it has also revealed something significant …

New Testament Biblical Apocrypha And The Exclusion Of Apocalypses From The Canon, Vincent Marino May 2016

New Testament Biblical Apocrypha And The Exclusion Of Apocalypses From The Canon, Vincent Marino

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The criteria for canonicity which led to the inclusion of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament call into question the exclusion of other apocryphal apocalypses and revelatory treatises. Biblical apocrypha is defined as texts that were at one time a part of the biblical canon but no longer are, or texts that were never a part of the biblical canon at all but are widely known and valued. Examples of writings that collectively make up the apocrypha are gospels, gnostic texts, acts, epistles, apocalypses, fragments, lost works, …

The Book Thief: Through The Eyes Of Death, Alysa Mapes

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Introduction

In Brian Percival’s film, The Book Thief, an ominous narrator pops in and out throughout the movie narrating the protagonist, Liesel's, tragic life story. It is not until the dreary end of the film that we find out the narrator's true identity, Death. It is only appropriate the film and novel would have such a narrator, as Liesel's life has been rattled by death on many circumstances. Many film reviews and essays do not believe Death to be an appropriate narrator. These reviewers feel that Death as a …
