Florentine Bookbinding And Restoration, Emily Erin Purcell May 2016

Florentine Bookbinding And Restoration, Emily Erin Purcell

Senior Theses

Florence, Italy is a hub for art and literature. These two disciplines come together in the tradition of bookbinding, which is alive and well in Florence. A city that appreciates its own rich culture, Florence maintains many traditional practices and crafts, such as bookbinding and metalworking. The Florentines preserve more than just practices, though. The numerous museums in Florence work to physically protect and store pieces of art, artifacts, and documents. All of this preservation was challenged in 1966, with the flood of Florence’s Arno River. The flood destroyed countless manuscripts, books, and pieces of art. With this devastation, a …

Metaphorically Mapping Literature Onto Music: An Analytical Guide, Aubrey Elizabeth Leaman May 2016

Metaphorically Mapping Literature Onto Music: An Analytical Guide, Aubrey Elizabeth Leaman

Senior Theses

Music and literature are both inherently narrative structures. Because of this, when the paraphrase of a musical aspect is similar to the paraphrase of a literary aspect, that literary aspect, whether it is a character or action, can be metaphorically mapped onto the music at that point. Like any mode of interpretation the theorist must be careful to remain true to the music, but conscientious metaphorical mappings provide a creatively stimulating approach to both literature and music that can engender an even deeper understanding of the music itself. There are many precedents to this approach. Renowned theorists including Lawrence Kramer, …

Am I Creative?, Michael Patrick Duggan May 2016

Am I Creative?, Michael Patrick Duggan

Senior Theses

This thesis is an exploration of what it means to be creative and what it takes to start new creative projects. The overall goal of the project was to capture the process of taking on something new, and following it through to the end. I also want to show the audience the reward and gratification that can come from trying something new and completing it. My hope is that people will see my documentary and want to do something similar, inspiring them to go out and find the ways that they can live a creative life.

Plays And Punks; Or, Aphra Behn And The Restoration Woman, Amanda J. Thompson May 2016

Plays And Punks; Or, Aphra Behn And The Restoration Woman, Amanda J. Thompson

Theses & Honors Papers

In many ways, the Restoration Period in England (1660-1700) is defined by its interest in sexuality. Following the Interregnum (1649-1660), sexuality became a mechanism to distinguish royalists from the “puritanical followers” of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), particularly through the emergence of the libertine (Novak 56). Libertinism “made the senses a primary source of knowledge,” which challenged “conventional morality” through ritualistic fornication, drunkenness, and adultery (Staves 20). Men, like John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester (1647-1680) wrote bawdy poetry celebrating their sexual conquests. Libertines were also regularly featured in Restoration drama, with playwrights like William Wycherley (1640-1716) and George Etherege (1636-1692) …

Pieces: An Inquiry In Family Stories, Southern Identity And Creative Nonfiction Writing, Morgan Elaine Lundy May 2016

Pieces: An Inquiry In Family Stories, Southern Identity And Creative Nonfiction Writing, Morgan Elaine Lundy

Senior Theses

This thesis project is, at heart, a creative nonfiction writing project—and one that evolved and changed over the course of its development. Ultimately it consists of two main parts: a 60 page oral history-based artist book, and an accompanying 14 page process paper which details my creative process as well as challenges, influences and insights. Drawing together smaller stylistic “pieces”—oral stories turned poems, pictures, documents, design elements, my own prose reflections through the repurposed mechanism of photo captions—the final text emerges as both a larger narrative and an embodiment of a culture of language greater than its smaller parts. Logistically, …

A Comparison Of Irish Flute And Classical Flute Training, Allison Marjorie Layton May 2016

A Comparison Of Irish Flute And Classical Flute Training, Allison Marjorie Layton

Senior Theses

For my Senior Thesis Project, I learned to play the traditional Irish flute while I was in Ireland for a semester. I initially thought that there would be no better time or place to learn a new instrument than if I was surrounded by its culture for four months. I went in to the project already knowing how to play the classical silver flute, but knew that the traditional Irish flute was different. I found that the biggest differences were between the instruments themselves and how the two final performance goals of each affected the training in almost every step …

The Inuit Vs. The Steamboat: Human Exhibitionism And Popular Concerns About The Effects Of The Market Revolution In The Early Republic, Ryan Bachman May 2016

The Inuit Vs. The Steamboat: Human Exhibitionism And Popular Concerns About The Effects Of The Market Revolution In The Early Republic, Ryan Bachman

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In the early nineteenth century, a new form of human exhibitionism spread through eastern American cities. While public displays featuring live human beings had existed since the colonial era, these new shows specifically focused on Native Americans. This paper examines one such show, the Inuit Exhibition of 1820-1821, as a case study of this phenomena. Primarily through the use of contemporary newspaper accounts, this project argues that shows like the Inuit Exhibition occurred within a cultural context that legitimized the practice of human exhibitionism as a genuine, post-Enlightenment method of educating citizens about the natural world. Furthermore, so-called “Indian Exhibitions” …

Richmond's Urban Crisis: Racial Transition During The Civil Rights Era, 1960-1977, Marvin T. Chiles May 2016

Richmond's Urban Crisis: Racial Transition During The Civil Rights Era, 1960-1977, Marvin T. Chiles

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Between 1960 and 1977, Richmond, Virginia, experienced a tremendous racial shift in its overall population. The shift from majority white to majority black brought about the city’s first black majority city council, black mayor, and majority black school district with a black superintendent. How and why this racial transition happened is the focus of this work. Richmond’s racial transition was a part of Civil Rights legislation destabilizing the sociopolitical landscape. As federal Civil Rights legislation was intended to create a post-racial America, in Richmond, blacks and whites ensured the opposite. Both races combined class interest, past racial norms, and future …

Isis Rhetoric: A War Of Online Videos, Kathryn Mcdearis May 2016

Isis Rhetoric: A War Of Online Videos, Kathryn Mcdearis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In an attempt to combat ISIS recruitment videos, the United States Department of State (USDS) developed the Think Again, Turn Away social media campaign featuring videos attempting to persuade viewers to resist the message of ISIS. In the article “U.S. government: A war of online video propaganda,” authors William Allendorfer and Susan Herring (2015) analyze the textual rhetoric of the ISIS video series Flames of War in comparison to eight Think Again, Turn Away videos. To add to Allendorfer and Herring’s (2015) textual analysis, this study uses the framework of scholar David Blakesley’s (2004) four elements of film rhetoric ( …

Examining Humor As A Rheotrical Tool: A Case Study On The Read, Edrees Nawabi May 2016

Examining Humor As A Rheotrical Tool: A Case Study On The Read, Edrees Nawabi

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

As race relations reach their worst state since the early 1990s, the Black American community has resorted to new and savvy rhetorical moves to communicate their point of view. This thesis takes on the podcast, The Read, in order to examine how humor is used as a rhetorical tool within the Black American community. Using a case study method, this research takes on a close examination of the five most popular episodes of The Read that aired between August 2015 and December 2015. The three philosophical theories of humor, superiority, relief, and incongruity, are coded within eleven controversial topics …

De Iniustitia Belli: Violence Against Civilians In The Thirty Years War, Joseph Berg May 2016

De Iniustitia Belli: Violence Against Civilians In The Thirty Years War, Joseph Berg

Honors Thesis

The Thirty Years War stands as one of the most cataclysmic events of German history — and one of the most contentiously remembered. Beginning during the war and encouraged down to our own century, writers and scholars have recorded the Thirty Years War as either a string of wanton destructions or an event far less horrible than the many extant eyewitness testimonies to its horrors. This dispute has obscured the realities of death and suffering. In 17th century warfare, plunder and scavenging were appropriate behavior for a conquering army — within certain bounds. While it would be simplistic and grossly …

The Highway To Hell In The City Of Angels: The Automobile And Its Role In Influencing The Transportation Infrastructure Of Post-World War Ii Los Angeles, William Ronald Rehbock May 2016

The Highway To Hell In The City Of Angels: The Automobile And Its Role In Influencing The Transportation Infrastructure Of Post-World War Ii Los Angeles, William Ronald Rehbock

Honors Thesis

In this paper I am analyzing the automobile as the driving force behind the development of the freeway system in Los Angeles during the Post-World War II period. My research was driven by the following questions. To what extent did the popularity and accessibility of the automobile in the United States govern the way cities such as Los Angeles grow and develop? To what extent did the car’s presence as a status symbol impact this trend? In this paper I argue that Los Angeles exists as it does today primarily as a result of its development during the automotive age …

Cultivation, Erudition, Edification, Ariel Lee May 2016

Cultivation, Erudition, Edification, Ariel Lee

be Still

Cultivation, Erudition, Edification is an exercise of self-portraiture. Few careers are as all encompassing, and all consuming as that as a physician. Becoming a physician is a metamorphosis, it changes who you are and becomes an intrinsic part of who you become. As a medical student, I am measured first by my intellect, and then by my communication skills, social competence and responsibility. In a way, I am somewhat disembodied by my profession. Everyday life comes with a mask on your face, bulky scrubs obscuring your gender and the epochal white coat spilling over with notes, books and instruments. Gender …

Throughout the history of human existence the ability of the female form to bear offspring has remained a marvel of medicine and science prying the boundaries of our creator. This black and white silhouette of the female form with child gives us a positive and powerful statement. From this comes life, which fuels our mind and powers to help create, preserve, and maintain the health of the human form and fight disease.

Classical India provided a unique juxtaposition of art and life. One would readily see monasteries which extolled the values of asceticism and celibacy yet would display female sculptures that exuded sensuality. Such presentations are not hedonistic, but instead present the female form at its most divine and graceful. The tribhanga position was the epitome of this philosophy accentuating the curves and elegance of the sacred female.

Art offers me an avenue to decompress from school life and to use the knowledge I have gained in innovative ways. As a healthcare practitioner, I want to use this passion to develop new …

My Body Is Mine: Yet For A Time It Was Yours, Isabel Thompson

My body is mine, yet for time it was yours. I was made for you - my form created to be your habitat, all aspects of my being working in unison to support your growth and development. You grew and grew, becoming your own person within the liminal space of my womb. On the shoreline of a new life, breathing in and out like the waves washed upon the sand. You are of me, of us, yet separate, your own unique being. I housed you, gave you food and warmth through my body. Flesh of my flesh, blood of my …

This is a painting of a girl names Cintya from Huancayo, Peru. I went to Peru on a medical mission trip with the Foundation for the International Medical Relief of Children in 2012. Cintya was in an orphanage called Rosario that houses victims of sexual abuse. Another girl at the orphanage had gone around the orphanage taking pictures and this painting depicts one on those pictures. I’m not sure what it is about the photo, but I just love the expression on her face and she has a natural, relaxed happiness that can only come from a close friend taking …
