David Alfaro Siqueiros’S Pivotal Endeavor: Realizing The “Manifiesto De New York” In The Siqueiros Experimental Workshop Of 1936, Emily Schlemowitz
Theses and Dissertations
The Siqueiros Experimental Workshop, initiated by David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896–1974) in 1936, is often considered a pivotal moment for the artist. This thesis unveils new documentation about the Workshop, illuminating heretofore-unobserved aspects of the group’s governance, political aims, and theoretical framework put forth by Siqueiros in his critical “Manifiesto de New York.”

On The Role Of Sublimation In The Works Of Gabriele Reuter, Maria Skene-Björkman
On The Role Of Sublimation In The Works Of Gabriele Reuter, Maria Skene-Björkman
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In my thesis I discuss the relationship between Nietzsche’s concept of amor fati (love of fate) and Lacan’s understanding of sublimation through the lens of selected works by Gabriele Reuter. I argue that Reuter deploys an understanding of will power that draws on the Nietzschean concept of amor fati, which ultimately serves the function of sublimation as discussed by Lacan. In their respective efforts at establishing their own identities, the female protagonists in Reuter’s novels have to learn to overcome their sufferings, and in doing so they transform the process of identity formation into a life-affirming enterprise in the spirit …

Autobiography In Disarray: Setouchi Jakuchō’S Use Of Biography As Self-Expression In Beauty In Disarray, Sara M. Newsome
Autobiography In Disarray: Setouchi Jakuchō’S Use Of Biography As Self-Expression In Beauty In Disarray, Sara M. Newsome
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to analyze Setouchi Jakuchō’s biographical novel Beauty in Disarray (美は乱調にあり, 1966), through the lens of biographical writing as the author’s self-expression. Beauty in Disarray follows Seitō member Itō Noe from her adolescence in the spring of 1911 into her adulthood and ends abruptly with the “Hikage Teahouse Incident” in 1916, when Ōsugi Sakae, who would later go on to marry Itō, is stabbed by a jealous Kamichika Ichiko, another figured tied heavily to Seitō. Aside from the main character of Itō Noe, Beauty in Disarray also features several important members of Seitō and …
Catullan Obscenity And Modern English Translation, Tori Frances Lee
Catullan Obscenity And Modern English Translation, Tori Frances Lee
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the ways Catullus uses obscenity in his poetry, and how modern translators captures those effects when translating obscenity into English. I first define obscenity by creating four categories of words that all have to do with taboo topics and exist only in certain contexts, outside of polite company: obscenities, technical terms, circumlocutions, and euphemisms. The first chapter analyzes Poems 16, 37, and 97, Catullus's most obscene, to show that the poet uses profanity as a literary device that gains its strength from its juxtaposition with non-obscene words. The second chapter looks at seven English translations written post-1970 …
American Undergraduates Undone: Social And Intellectual Dysfunction On Campus, Noelle P. Jones
American Undergraduates Undone: Social And Intellectual Dysfunction On Campus, Noelle P. Jones
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The pivotal, formative years of typical undergraduates, ages 18-22, represent a time when students mold their distinctive identities, social personalities, and intellects more intensively than during any other period of their lives. Developmental theorists Arthur W. Chickering and Linda Reisser call this process “journeying toward individuation—the discovery and refinement of one’s unique way of being—and also toward communion with other individuals and groups, including the larger national and global society” (35). In today’s college climate, students flummox and astound parents, professors, and researchers due to their individual immaturity and disengagement with learning. Although these complaints identify nothing new in America, …
Imagination, Emotion, And Adolescent Socialization In German Literature From Romanticism To 1901, Brooke Shafar
Imagination, Emotion, And Adolescent Socialization In German Literature From Romanticism To 1901, Brooke Shafar
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the representation of imagination, emotion, and adolescent socialization in German literature of the nineteenth century, in both canonical and popular texts, beginning with the work of E. T. A. Hoffmann in the early part of the century and ending with Thomas Manns Buddenbrooks in 1901. I examine my topic through a number of lenses. The dissertation is divided into two parts, each with two chapters. In the first part, I show how these representations of character imagination and emotion are variously tied to historical questions of adolescence and socialization that appear in the literature of the period. …
Make Love And War: Chinese Popular Romance In Greater East Asia, 1937-1945, Chun-Yu Lu
Make Love And War: Chinese Popular Romance In Greater East Asia, 1937-1945, Chun-Yu Lu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation examines Chinese popular romances produced and consumed in the Japanese colonized and occupied regions, including Taiwan, Manchukuo, and Shanghai, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. I investigate the complex relationships between emotion, representation, and consumption vis--vis wartime discourses and sociopolitical turmoil. Through extensive archival research in Taiwan, China and Japan, I (re)discovered and reevaluated five important wartime popular romance writers and their works. In addition to fiction, sequels, film and stage play adaptations, Japanese translation and readers/viewers responses all together create the cultural phenomena of the popular romance genre. In this dissertation I ask the following questions: How are …
The Composite Score: Indiewood Film Music At The Turn Of The Twenty-First Century, Jennifer Lauren Psujek
The Composite Score: Indiewood Film Music At The Turn Of The Twenty-First Century, Jennifer Lauren Psujek
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation attempts to move away from the original orchestral/compiled score binary still common in film music scholarship. To open up the analysis of film scores in ways that more accurately reflect late twentieth century Hollywood practice, four films (Eyes Wide Shut [Stanley Kubrick, 1999], Magnolia [P.T. Anderson, 1999], Fight Club [David Fincher, 1999], and Moulin Rouge! [Baz Luhrmann, 2001] are examined. Each film uses a combination of pre-existing and original music where each type plays an equally important narrative, structural, and emotional role in the film. I create a new category in film music studies by calling this scoring …
The Long-Playing Ellington: Analyzing Composition And Collaboration In The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Darren Lacour
The Long-Playing Ellington: Analyzing Composition And Collaboration In The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Darren Lacour
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines four albums released by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra in the LP era, highlighting the intertwined roles composition and collaboration play in the realization of the sonic products. The first chapter analyzes 1951s Masterpieces by Ellington, the bands first 12-inch LP and one of the first jazz albums to explore the possibilities of the long-playing record as a medium. I balance discussion of Ellingtons compositional techniques in The Tattooed Bride, an eleven-minute concert work, with an examination of interaction as it occurs on the extended arrangements of three standards that constitute the albums remaining tracks. Chapter 2 …
“A Wretched Idealist”: Tragedy In “Love Must Not Be Forgotten”, Daijuan Gao
“A Wretched Idealist”: Tragedy In “Love Must Not Be Forgotten”, Daijuan Gao
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Since its publication in 1979 and the ensuing controversy it evoked about the morality of an extramarital love affair (albeit platonic), Zhang Jie’s short story, “Love Must Not Be Forgotten” has continued to captivate readers and literary scholars. While the values of Zhang’s story, with its challenges to traditional ethics and its provocation of female consciousness, have been acknowledged by critics and commentators, examination of the aesthetics of the story’s tragic effect has thus far remained marginal. “Love” engendered pity and fear in readers, particularly during the time following the Cultural Revolution when the lives of Chinese people were firmly …
Music As Medicine: An Evocative Bi-Autoethnography Of Surviving Divorce, Annabella Sok Kuan Fung
Music As Medicine: An Evocative Bi-Autoethnography Of Surviving Divorce, Annabella Sok Kuan Fung
The Qualitative Report
As a musician-researcher of Chinese musicians’ journeys, I was confronted with stories that led me to interrogate my own worldviews. As my identity shifted in this experiential process, I became an autoethnographer by serendipity. Autoethnography is storytelling that blurs the boundaries between humanities and sciences, expressing lived experience in novel and literary forms, depicting stories and including authors’ critical reflection on their lives and writing process, with the purpose of transforming self and society. This evocative autoethnography explores the phenomenon of divorce, in reference to my personal experience and another musician’s lived experience interpreted through my understanding as a participant-researcher. …
Wilde's Final Act, Justine Ilissa Sha
Wilde's Final Act, Justine Ilissa Sha
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis examines Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis, the prison-written letter to his ex-lover, as a work created with the signature Wildean dramatic conventions of composition, style, the writing process, and formal structure of which make up Wilde’s theatrical plays “Lady Windermere’s Fan” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.” This shows how De Profundis was written not as an autobiographical work, a love letter, or a portrait of a tormented, imprisoned mind, but as a performance: paradoxical play in the same style as his dramatic repertoire, and desperately intended for publication. First, the Wilde’s dramatic writing process is examined. Then, using …
A Daring Voice: Confessional Poetry Of The 1970s From Argentina And The United States, Julia Eva Leverone
A Daring Voice: Confessional Poetry Of The 1970s From Argentina And The United States, Julia Eva Leverone
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Daring to confront difficult socio-political realities on the page, Argentine and United States poets writing in the late 1960s and early 1970s strove against systems of silence. Implementing direct and indirect poetics, each set of poets embodied, in differing and overlapping ways, elements of the confessionalist mode, at once relational and witnessing. Their poetry in collections from these particular years reflected the risk in their auto-positioning as subjects within their poems and with complex relationships with their audience, and in their usage of language, sometimes fragmented, protective, or urgent. They committed personal experience to the page, and in conveying their …
Binding Freedom: Cuba's Black Public Sphere, 1868-1912, Alexander Sotelo Eastman
Binding Freedom: Cuba's Black Public Sphere, 1868-1912, Alexander Sotelo Eastman
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation studies the cultural, social, and political associations linked to the civil rights movement in Cuba during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which witnessed the abolition of slavery, the crumbling of colonialism and the entrance of black intellectuals into formal politics. I trace the emergence of a black public sphere and analyze the networks of communication among people of color in Cuba and the wider Black Atlantic through sources that include antislavery narratives, the black press, court cases and secret police records. I argue that people of color in Cuba, enslaved and freed alike, engaged in political …
Spectacular Skepticism: Visual Contradiction On The Early Modern English Stage, Lauren Robertson
Spectacular Skepticism: Visual Contradiction On The Early Modern English Stage, Lauren Robertson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Early modern English culture was marked by a prolonged and multi-faceted struggle with uncertainty. This epistemological crisis took place on several fronts, crossing elite and popular discourses: in the clash of confessional convictions, the ramifications of Calvins doctrine of election, the long complications of Elizabethan succession, and the threat to traditions of natural philosophy by the burgeoning field of experimental science, to name a few sites of disturbance. A restless cultural awareness emerged that certainty, whether in earthly matters or those of God, might not be possible. In Spectacular Skepticism: Visual Contradiction on the Early Modern English Stage, I show …
A Network Of Experience: Community Building And Social Restructuring In Fluxus, Margaret Sherer
A Network Of Experience: Community Building And Social Restructuring In Fluxus, Margaret Sherer
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My thesis argues that the group dynamic of Fluxus and the artwork produced by the group functioned as agents in the cultivation and maintenance of a Fluxus community that developed an experimental, object-based approach to societal formation. I argue that a primary goal of Fluxus was to use their artistic production and their association to establish alternative modes of social interaction that were simultaneously plagiarizing and criticizing conventional social and political institutions.
State Of Health: African-American Laboring Health And The Politics Of Reparations In The Age Of Emancipation, 1830-1900, Dale Kretz
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
State of Health recasts the long history of emancipation in the United States. Emancipation is conventionally framed as a transition from lash to cash, wherein the federal government abandoned the formerly enslaved to the free labor system of the postbellum South. Yet this picture fails to account for the hundreds of thousands of intimate interactions freedpeople had with federal officials of the U.S. Pension Bureau in the decades after the Civil War. This dissertation accordingly shows how the personal rule of the slaveholder gave way to the personal rule of the American central state. The first chapters demonstrate that the …
