A "Princely Lady": The Religion, Power And Identity Of Anne Boleyn, Alexandra Elise Deselms
A "Princely Lady": The Religion, Power And Identity Of Anne Boleyn, Alexandra Elise Deselms
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Anne Boleyn (c. 1501 – 1536), the second wife of Henry VIII, was an influential and controversial figure in her time and is the subject of intense debate among historians today, not to mention fascination among the general public. Historians are sharply divided and seek to categorize her as either an early Protestant influential at court (historians such as Ives, Warnicke, and Starkey) or ultimately Catholic and passive (Bernard). This thesis moves beyond such polemics by combining a close analysis of documents from the time and the goals of their authors with post-modern approaches to historical biography emphasizing the fluidity …

Dancing Again: History, Memory, And Activism At Wounded Knee, Owen Volzke
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
This study examines the role history and memory played in the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee by Oglala protestors. The research demonstrates that a historical and memorial understanding of Lakota culture and relationship with the United States played a critical role in the identity protestors consciously sought to create for themselves. In particular, the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 and the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 were key events legitimizing the struggle of Oglala protestors seeking an improvement in their living conditions. Furthermore, Oglala protestors cultivated the resurrection of a Lakota culture long suppressed within the Pine Ridge Reservation, with …

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
If you’re a frequent reader of the Compiler, it comes as no news to you that the Gettysburg area is historic for more than just its battlefield. From a pre-war African American community to the World War I tank camp commanded by a young Dwight Eisenhower, Gettysburg has a rich and vibrant history that the time-frozen battlefield, however majestic in its own right, all too often obscures. One of my favorite places in the region, however, is a state park located just fourteen miles west of town. Nestled amidst the ridges of South Mountain, Caledonia State Park stands on …

Geopolitical Implications Of The Sino-Japanese East China Sea Dispute For The U.S., Bert Chapman
Geopolitical Implications Of The Sino-Japanese East China Sea Dispute For The U.S., Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Much analysis on Asian strategic challenges facing the U.S. has justifiably emphasized the South China Sea (SCS). This has also been reflected in 2016 presidential campaign debate on the SCS as an emerging area of U.S. foreign and national security policy concern. The East China Sea (ECS) is at least as important for the strategic interests of the U.S. and its allies given the tension between China and Japan over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, potential energy resources in this body of water, increasing defense spending by adjacent geographic powers, the area’s importance as a maritime international trade route, and the possibility …

Research Brief: "Mental Health Of Transgender Veterans In Us States With And Without Discrimination And Hate Crime Legal Protection", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study suggests that policies protecting transgender individuals from employment discrimination are associated with better mental health, as it found that transgender individuals represent one of the most marginalized populations in both civilian and military communities. In practice, employers should continue encouraging a safe and welcoming environment for all employees, including individuals who identify as transgender, and medical providers serving transgender veterans should consider evaluating their patients’ mental health. In policy, policymakers might continue efforts to reduce discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and might consider introducing bills to protect LGBTQ+ persons. Suggestions for future study include sampling …
Asian-European Cultural Mediation In The Works Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken
Asian-European Cultural Mediation In The Works Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
This paper, presented at an MLA International Symposium in Düsseldorf, Germany--"Other Europes: Migrations, Translations, Transformations"-- explores the sources of Galsan Tschinag's reception as a cultural mediator, based on post-colonial readings of his German-language writings and statements. Tschinag's status as shaman, healer and chief within his own people merges with the fact of his literary voice in German. While exoticism might explain part of his appeal, I show literary and philosophical elements that help to subvert stereotypes and promote cultural understanding.
Tracing The Material: Spaces And Objects In British And Irish Modernist Novels, Mary Allison Wise
Tracing The Material: Spaces And Objects In British And Irish Modernist Novels, Mary Allison Wise
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tracing the Material considers how James Joyce’s Ulysses, Virginia Woolf’s The Years, and Samuel Beckett’s Murphy represent material spaces and objects as a way of engaging with the fraught histories of England and Ireland. I argue that these three writers use spaces and objects to think through and critique nineteenth and early twentieth-century conflicts and transitions, particularly in the areas of empire, nationalism, gender, and family. Writing in the 1920s and 1930s, in the decline of British ascendency, the rise of the Irish Free State, and between the World Wars, these writers seek to interpret their history through …
Improvisational Therapy Methods May Help Alleviate Music Performance Anxiety Symptoms In College Musicians, Shaina Rush
Improvisational Therapy Methods May Help Alleviate Music Performance Anxiety Symptoms In College Musicians, Shaina Rush
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Musical performance anxiety (MPA) is a prominent disorder among musicians (Kirchner, 2004/2005). Music therapy is one of the most effective forms of therapy for anxiety in non-musicians; however, it has been overlooked as a coping method for anxious musicians (Martinez, 2009). This study included five sessions of improvisational exercises with college wind musicians. As a result, MPA symptoms subsided, and self-awareness of the body was improved during performances. Anxiety levels were measured via self-reported surveys and personal journals of progress from participants. Research in improvisational practice techniques provided performing artist with a form of self-therapy that may lead to more …

A Study Of Performance Practices Pertaining To W.A. Mozart's Flute Concerto In D Major, K.314, Tanya Nicole Russi
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Performers oftentimes learn music without taking the time to learn about the work historically. Oftentimes this kind of research into the performance practices of the time can be key to successfully playing a piece of music in the way it was intended by the composer. Although there are many different concepts that can be considered when studying a piece of music, I have specifically focused my research on the instrument the piece was written for, the articulation styles used, the type of tone produced and expected, how ornamentation and embellishment is approached, and how cadenzas were written and used. In …
Tonal Atonality: An Analysis Of Samuel Barber's "Nocturne Op. 33", Nathan C. Wambolt
Tonal Atonality: An Analysis Of Samuel Barber's "Nocturne Op. 33", Nathan C. Wambolt
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
After the end of the Romantic era of music, one of the most infamous new compositional styles was Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique which uses all 12 tones of the chromatic scale to form a set that is then manipulated in various ways to produce an entire piece of music. Quite frankly, the end result is difficult to listen to. Needless to say, twelve-tone technique has since fallen out of popularity. However, some composers have modified the twelve-tone technique to create music that is strikingly beautiful. Samuel Barber is one such composer. His piano piece Nocturne Op. 33 contains twelve-tone compositional …
