The Impact Of Volunteering At A Girls Outreach Activity On Community Formation, Donna C. Llewellyn, Janet Callahan, Amy J. Moll, Catherine Rose Bates
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper is focused on exploring the motivation for volunteering at an engineering outreach activity. The outreach activity itself involved a two day, overnight experience for 9th and 10th grade girls that started in 2005, and which has been held annually since that time. The outreach event takes place in Boise, Idaho, and at the time of its onset was the only outreach or camp activity in the state focused on girls or young women. Across ten years, 510 total girls have participated, with approximately 85% of them coming from the immediate metropolitan area. The program was developed with a …

All oral histories
Zander recalls writing to Myers when he was rumored to be considering closing the School of Nursing. Her primary contact with him was when she was selected as a recipient of an honorary doctorate in 2001 and she recalls being a guest in his home and seeing some of his collections. Her interview also includes a number of stories about her time as a student with topics including being a member of Sigma Kappa, Sigma Theta Tau, attending rallies against the Vietnam War and "women's hours," and the 300 level Humanities class she was part of. She closes with a …
A New Materialist Approach To Visual Rhetoric In Photoshopbattles, Jonathan Paul Ray
A New Materialist Approach To Visual Rhetoric In Photoshopbattles, Jonathan Paul Ray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project is to examine the visual rhetoric of one online community. Drawing heavily from the work of Laurie Gries (2015), I track the evolution of an image as it circulates through a forum of photo manipulators in the group “PhotoShopBattles.” While Gries’ work traced the evolution of the iconic Obama Hope poster and its iterations in various media, this project restricts its observations to the images posted to one webpage, focusing on one evolutionary chain. By narrowing the focus to one internet forum page that evolved over the course of one week, we can observe linear …
Reflection & Technology In Theory & Practice: Teen Engagement In Art Museums, Chelsea E. Kelly
Reflection & Technology In Theory & Practice: Teen Engagement In Art Museums, Chelsea E. Kelly
Occasional Paper Series
This case study shows how the Milwaukee Art Museum’s after-school teen program fosters student engagement through a hybrid practice grounded in constructivist pedagogy. This article presents the museum’s Satellite High School Program in theory and in practice, including its evaluation methods and its impact on students and the museum. In the spirit of the program itself, which celebrates student voices, participants’ own videos, quotes, and experiences will frame my reflections from an educator’s point of view.

The Influence Of Historic Violin Treatises On Modern Teaching And Performance Practices, Hanna C. Hann
The Influence Of Historic Violin Treatises On Modern Teaching And Performance Practices, Hanna C. Hann
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Effective technique in violin playing evolved due to several historical pedagogical treatises written by knowledgeable masters. These treatises have greatly influenced the development of today’s pedagogical approaches. Unfortunately, many students may not know why a technique has been prescribed or how the various aspects of technique work together. Understanding why these techniques are used today, and even how they evolved, can help a student correctly apply and reach the desired result. The treatises of Francesco Geminiani (1751), Leopold Mozart (1756), L’Abbé le Fils (1761), and Pierre Marie François de Sales Baillot (1834) shaped performance practice and contributed to the development …
Alphonse Mucha And The Emergence Of The “New Woman” During The Belle Époque (1871–1914), Sarah Blattner
Alphonse Mucha And The Emergence Of The “New Woman” During The Belle Époque (1871–1914), Sarah Blattner
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Notions of ideal femininity in Western culture shifted during the Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), approximately 1871 to 1914. This article serves as a comparative historical study examining the shifting representations of women in art within Western society during that era. This study focuses on the transition from the image of the “modest maiden” (popular in the mid-nineteenth century) to the image of the “new woman” (emerging within the Art Nouveau movement, 1890 to 1910). From the Art Nouveau (New Art) period, the lush art of Alphonse Mucha stands out as an example of the time’s idea of feminine beauty. Mucha’s …
Reconstructing Activity Patterns At Epidamnus, Albania: Impacts Of Greek And Roman Colonizations, Jennifer Wright
Reconstructing Activity Patterns At Epidamnus, Albania: Impacts Of Greek And Roman Colonizations, Jennifer Wright
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Colonization is often associated with exploitation of local laborers. However, the degree to which physical activity in local populations changes following colonization depends upon the policies of the colonizers, and the technologies that are locally available. This research tests the null hypothesis that levels of physical activity, as evidenced by osteoarthritis in human skeletons, remained constant at Epidamnus, Albania during Greek and Roman colonial occupation (620 BC-AD 378). To test this hypothesis, 80 skeletons from Epidamnus were examined for evidence of osteoarthritis, and scored according to international standardized protocols. Of these 80 individuals, 27 were adults that showed sufficient preservation …
No Child Left Unharmed: The Image Of The Child In The Hunger Games, Sara Harvey
No Child Left Unharmed: The Image Of The Child In The Hunger Games, Sara Harvey
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
This project seeks to examine the role of the child presented in The Hunger Games by comparing the image of the child to that of the adult, both in the individual districts and in the utopian city of the Capital. By using the contrasting images, I aim to show how imagery is used to draw on the significance of the misplaced roles. Director Gary Ross uses opposing color themes to show stark differences between the Capital and the districts. However, I feel that a further argument can be made in the way that the children and adults are expressed on …
