“Straight” Acting: Changing Image Of Queer-Masculinity In Media Representation, Zheng Zhu
“Straight” Acting: Changing Image Of Queer-Masculinity In Media Representation, Zheng Zhu
Publications and Research
In this essay, I critically examine media representation of Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas, with a specific focus on the construction of his masculinity as an outing gay celebrity. The existing critical scholarship has studied various forms of media representation of queer images. But they did not examine how unconventional queer representation interacts with the normative gender performance. This paper investigates mainstream media’s discursive construction of masculine gay male. The findings call our attention to the emergence of macho gay characterization, which supports the hegemonic domination of heterosexual normativity. The stigmatization of gay-ness as the deviated other is rationalized through …
A Critique Of The Three Approaches To Studying Liang Qichao's Aesthetic Thoughts, Xianwu Mo
A Critique Of The Three Approaches To Studying Liang Qichao's Aesthetic Thoughts, Xianwu Mo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
There are three academic approaches to Liang Qichao's aesthetic thoughts: political criticism of Cai Shangsi around 1949, enlightenment criticism of Li Zehou in the new period, and aesthetic criticism of Jin Ya in this century. In spite of their varying attitudes towards politics, they all endorse the division of politics and aesthetics. The difference is that political criticism sees aesthetics attached to politics, enlightenment criticism distances aesthetics from politics, and aesthetic criticism sets aesthetics against politics. In fact, the relationship between politics and aesthetics is not merely one of separation or antithesis, but also one of consistency in terms of …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
It is important and urgent to explore media literary theory in the era of dramatic media change. By adjusting our academic stances and broadening our vision of literary theory research, by focusing on internet literature and studying the theoretical structure of new media literary theory, and by understanding the adaptability and rethinking the possibility of new media literary theory, scholars can promote electronic media literary theory and the theoretical construction of literary theory in the digital era in China.
Espen J. Aarseth's Thought On Hypertext Aesthetics, Chunhua Nie
Espen J. Aarseth's Thought On Hypertext Aesthetics, Chunhua Nie
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Espen J. Aarseth's reflections on popular theories about the hypertext have primarily led to his distinction between the structure and the reading of the hypertext, since, for him, it is the hypertext' nonlinearity rather than multi-linearity that determines the real differences between the hypertext and the traditional text. He analyzes the power relation between the author and the reader of the hypertext, and criticizes some popular claims about the hypertext such as "reader-as-writer", "de-centralization", and "interactivity". On the basis of the distinction of the structure and the reading of the hypertext, he poses that the hypertext is of non-narrative structure …

Consumption Of Celebrity And The Republican Apparatus: Lu Xiaoman, Xu Zhimo And Tabloids In Late 1920s Shanghai, Jianhua Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In late 1920s Shanghai tabloids flourished. With sensational news reports and literary narratives, they catered to urban readers' needs for daily emotional and cultural consumption. Due to their involvement in the Yunshang Company and theatre performances, Lu Xiaoman and Xu Zhimo became foci of Pictorial Shanghai and other major tabloids. Numerous news or rumors about their activities revealed different values, tastes, and commercial strategies among the tabloids, which told the game rules, ethics, and cultural politics of various communities and strata in the civil society. To a certain extent, the tabloids not only helped the masses know more about power …
Esteeming The Poetic Style: Yan Yu's Theory Of Bense And Its Four Elements, Yongliang Shang, Yaqing Duan
Esteeming The Poetic Style: Yan Yu's Theory Of Bense And Its Four Elements, Yongliang Shang, Yaqing Duan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Unlike the literary trend in the Song Dynasty that good poetry is believed to consist in good diction, the poet's talent and learning, and ideas, Yan Yu's employment of "bense", or the fundamental quality, to define the nature of the poetic style and the boundaries of poetry so as to esteem the poetic style. The connotation of bense is related to four major elements, namely, the expression of xingqing (disposition) as the main pursuit, miaowu (subtle enlightenment) as the way of realization, xingqu (the evocation of interests) as the character of expression, and rushen (entering into a realm of supremacy …
From Saturday To The "Saturday School": A Discussion On The "New/Old" Debate In The Early 1920s, Meng Luo
From Saturday To The "Saturday School": A Discussion On The "New/Old" Debate In The Early 1920s, Meng Luo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article sheds light on the sharp confrontation between New Culture intellectuals and the popular literati from 1921 to 1923. As a key word, the term "Saturday School" is derived from Saturday, an influential popular periodical in early Republican Shanghai. And in fact, the production process of "Saturday School" was intensely bound up with the "new/old" debate in modern Chinese literary history. Based on close reading of historical material and contextual analysis, the article concludes that the debate between "new" and "old" was concerned more with the competition over the discourse power of defining "what is new", which directly led …
How Horizontality Became A Medium: Rosalind Krauss On Pollock's All-Over Paintings, Yubing Shen, Qiuyue Mao
How Horizontality Became A Medium: Rosalind Krauss On Pollock's All-Over Paintings, Yubing Shen, Qiuyue Mao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Art historian Rosalind Krauss argues that Jackson Pollock has introduced a new medium in art practices by creating horizontal space in his all-over paintings. Such a medium has transcended the physical dimension of the object and become a persistent model, which greatly illuminated the subsequent minimalism and pop art. While setting out from a classic modernist approach, Krauss's criticism takes on a Structuralist outlook different from modernism. Centering on the co-participation of the artist, the environment and the work, her observation is more inclusive and powerful as a method of interpretation than modernist theories.
Literary Consumption In The Era Of Electronic Media, Youfeng Hu
Literary Consumption In The Era Of Electronic Media, Youfeng Hu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Literary consumption in the era of electronic media is characterized by technological, symbolic and entertaining inclinations. Literary consumption and literary production are mutually reactive, and this mutual reaction has been reflected by the synchronization of image production and omnimedia publishing, the medialization and literary consumption, the idolization of literary production and fans-based consumption, and the marketization of literary production as entertainment. The typical mode of literary production in the era of electronic media is the film adaptation of internet literature. Internet literature provides scripts for films and TV series, and, on films and TV programs help to spread Internet literature …
The Transforms Of Linguistic Literary Theory By Media Literary Theory, Xiaoxi Shan
The Transforms Of Linguistic Literary Theory By Media Literary Theory, Xiaoxi Shan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
If the 20th century is a century of language and linguistic literary theory, then the 21st century is a century of new media and media literary theory. Media literary theory, as a form of the post-linguistic literary theory, represents the sublation and transformation of linguistic literary theory. Linguistic literary theory occurred in the context of "the linguistic turn", while media literary theory is the outcome of "the media turn". Literary form is not only of linguistic structure but also the structure of the media system. The literary world is not only the real world constructed by language but also the …
The Shaking Continent: A Metageographical Critique Of Eurocentrism, Yujun Xu
The Shaking Continent: A Metageographical Critique Of Eurocentrism, Yujun Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Eurocentrism refers to both a system of values and a space-time mindset. Modern space-time ideology and geographical knowledge are characterized by objectivity and neutrality, which is usually ignored by postcolonial criticism. However, the divisions of continents and the boundary between the west and the east tend to betray subjectiveness and randomness, which sheds light on the interests of culture and geopolitics. The deconstruction of Eurocentrism does not necessarily imply a replacement, but an alternative mindset.

Cardiovascular Disease And Type 2 Diabetes In Evolutionary Perspective: A Critical Role For Helminths?, Michael D. Gurven, Benjamin C. Trumble, Jonathan Stieglitz, Aaron D. Blackwell, David E. Michalik, Caleb E. Finch, Hillard Kaplan
ESI Publications
Heart disease and type 2 diabetes are commonly believed to be rare among contemporary subsistencelevel human populations, and by extension prehistoric populations. Although some caveats remain, evidence shows these diseases to be unusual among well-studied hunter-gatherers and other subsistence populations with minimal access to healthcare. Here we expand on a relatively new proposal for why these and other populations may not show major signs of these diseases. Chronic infections, especially helminths, may offer protection against heart disease and diabetes through direct and indirect pathways. As part of a strategy to insure their own survival and reproduction, helminths exert multiple cardio-protective …

Crossing Paths: Musical And Ritual Interactivity Between The Ḥamadsha And Gnawa In Sidi Ali, Morocco, Christopher J. Witulski
Crossing Paths: Musical And Ritual Interactivity Between The Ḥamadsha And Gnawa In Sidi Ali, Morocco, Christopher J. Witulski
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
The processions occurring in Moroccan pilgrimages--such as those in Sidi Ali, a small town situated in the mountains outside of Meknes and Fez--are important sites that instigate an aesthetic negotiation within nearby possession ceremonies. The many musical groups that punctuate the cacophonous atmosphere during the annual pilgrimage are affiliated with a many of the country’s diverse mystical brotherhoods, including the gnawa, ḥamadsha, and ʿīsāwa. Through a detailed ethnographic description of processions and rituals from two of these groups, this article outlines ways in which musical tastes flow between the different events, informing the aesthetics of both outdoor …

Religious Processions In Indonesia: Cultural Identity And Politics On Bali And Lombok, David Harnish
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
In Bali and Lombok in Indonesia, processions—like similar events in many other parts of the world—are ritualized events breaking the normal flow of time. They are always temporally marked, and can be characterized as either religious and temple- or mosque-sponsored, or secular and state-sponsored. This article discusses religious processions generally on the neighbor islands of Bali and Lombok, and focuses on the processions of the spectacular Lingsar temple festival on Lombok. The festival conjoins the migrant Hindu Balinese and the local Muslim Sasak (the majority ethnic group) in ritual participation, but that participation differs in significant ways that are represented …
War Of The Worlds: Music And Cosmological Battles In The Balinese Cremation Procession, Michael B. Bakan
War Of The Worlds: Music And Cosmological Battles In The Balinese Cremation Procession, Michael B. Bakan
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Abstract
This article explores processional action as a form of cosmological intervention in Hindu-Balinese cremation processions, focusing on the multiple and intersecting functions of a particular type of Balinese instrumental music ensemble: the gamelan beleganjur. It explores the alternately “enlivening and protective aspects” (DeVale 1990, 62) that underlie the use of beleganjur music in the ngaben, or cremation ritual, showing how beleganjur’s sonic power and rhythmic drive serve to combat malevolent spirit beings, strengthen and inspire processional participants in their efforts to meet challenging ritual obligations, and grant courage to the souls of deceased individuals embarking on their …
Pilgrimage And Audience On The Maharashtrian Vārī, Jaime Jones
Pilgrimage And Audience On The Maharashtrian Vārī, Jaime Jones
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Abstract.
Each year during the monsoon season, devotees of the Hindu Vārkarī sect take to the streets of the cities and towns of Maharashtra, to go on the vārī, a massive annual pilgrimage lasting twenty-one days. The procession of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims is not only seen but heard, as the songs written by the singer-saints of the tradition occupy nearly every moment of the journey. In this article, I examine the relationship between music and pilgrimage procession by focusing on the idea of audience - defined as both the listening public and the act of hearing itself. Rather …
Transforming The Everyday Into The Extraordinary: Religious Processions In Portugal, Katherine M. Brucher
Transforming The Everyday Into The Extraordinary: Religious Processions In Portugal, Katherine M. Brucher
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Throughout Portugal, Roman Catholic parishes stage elaborate processions to celebrate patron saints on their feast days. The statue of the patron saint is carried through the streets of the community on a prescribed route accompanied by music, usually performed by a wind band, in an act of devotion that sacralizes the community. This essay draws on religious historian Robert Orsi’s “theology of the streets” to propose a musical theology of the streets as a framework for understanding how music not only physically mobilizes people, but also engages people spiritually into a feeling of communitas within in the context of the …
Relics, Processions And The Sounding Of Affections: Barbara Strozzi, The Archduchess Of Innsbruck, And Saint Anthony Of Padua, Sara M. Pecknold
Relics, Processions And The Sounding Of Affections: Barbara Strozzi, The Archduchess Of Innsbruck, And Saint Anthony Of Padua, Sara M. Pecknold
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
In 1655, Barbara Strozzi issued her fifth and only sacred opus, the Sacri musicali affetti, a print comprising fourteen passionately religious motets for solo voice and continuo. This article demonstrates how Strozzi's final motet to Saint Anthony reflects a surge in trans-Alpine Antonine devotion--a devotional trend in which both Strozzi's dedicatee, Anna de' Medici, and possibly the composer herself, participated. This essay examines two particular events: a procession of Saint Anthony’s relics from Venice to Padua in 1652, and the founding of a Antonine confraternity at the court of Innsbruck in the same year. When these phenomena are examined …
Civic Identity And Civic Glue: Venetian Processions And Ceremonies Of The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Jeffrey G. Kurtzman
Civic Identity And Civic Glue: Venetian Processions And Ceremonies Of The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Jeffrey G. Kurtzman
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Processions were an integral part of Venetian religious and civic life. State and church were inextricably intertwined, since the doge served not only as the head of the civil government, but also as the governor of the ducal church of St. Mark’s, by far the most important ecclesiastical institution in the city. Processions on feast days as well as processions celebrating civic events all culminated in some kind of religious service.
Ducal processions included the two instrumental ensembles of the doge: his pifferi and his six long silver trumpets. Other instruments and singers from St. Mark’s also participated in official …
The Rogationtide Processions Of Wilton Abbey, Alison N. Altstatt
The Rogationtide Processions Of Wilton Abbey, Alison N. Altstatt
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
The Benedictine convent of Wilton Abbey was among the wealthiest women’s religious communities in medieval England and home to an elite school for noble women. Until recently, a late thirteenth-century manuscript processional from Wilton was known only from a hand copy made circa 1860 at the Abbey of St. Pierre de Solesmes. The original manuscript was presumed lost. The recent identification of thirty-seven leaves of the original manuscript processional offers primary sources for the study of Wilton’s liturgy, and offers a means by which to assess the reliability of the nineteenth-century copy. The purpose of this study is to reconstruct …
