The Agent Across The Border: "Russia" And "Ukraine" As Actors In The News, 2013-2015, Abbey L. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This study examines how two media sources—one Russian and one Ukrainian—portray Russia and Ukraine before, during, and after the EuroMaidan crisis in Ukraine. Russian-language texts posted between January 2013 and December 2015 on the sites Ukranews.com (a Ukrainian news outlet) and TASS.ru (Russian) were organized in a corpus of over 20,000,000 words. This study analyzes the nouns “Россия” (“Russia”) and “Украина” (“Ukraine”) according to the verbal predicates that attach to either noun. The results demonstrate predictable variation in the agency of the two entities in response to cultural events and contexts.

The attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) caused thousands of deaths, national and global panic, and immediate action by the federal government to protect the borders of the United States of America (USA) from terrorism. In response to these attacks, the United States (U.S.) government enacted laws for law enforcement agencies to protect against terrorist activities. Law enforcement agencies are effective in combating terrorism, but their measures contain a major flaw - the improper use of race in profiling to address national security and public safety concerns. Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm

This empirical study explores the facilitation of lexical acquisition and retention through an incidental experiment examining the effect of Involvement Load on Italian vocabulary growth among beginner learners. The experiment, with a pre-test/post-test design investigates the facilitative effects of elaborate processing on L2 lexical acquisition and retention. Participants in sections of the same first-year Italian course were divided into one of five groups consisting of a Control Group and four Treatment groups. La Adquisición De Prestigio De Características No Estándares: El Caso De La Elisión De /-D-/ En El Andaluz, Carmen Ruiz-Sánchez

The Coastal Review

Most Andalusian characteristics lack overt prestige at the national level. However, Hernández-Campoy argues that adoption of non-standard features, like deletion of /-d-/, is taking place in standard Castilian areas, which entails a subsequent change in prestige. This study investigates the social manifestation of /-d-/ deletion in Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville). The results indicate that the deleted variant is widespread in all the social groups. The phenomenon predominates among younger speakers, which could indicate that this process, already noted in the 16^th century, is still vigorous and could indeed be acquiring overt prestige.

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Highlighting mentoring roles while relaying accounts of arts-based educational research (ABER) practice, we present a personal and conceptual narrative of emergent epistemological and pedagogical understandings encountered during dissertation journeys. Juxtaposing narratives with dialogue, we share postresearch reflexive work, and present a praxis-oriented discussion of ABER. We discuss implications for art education pedagogy, research, and leadership in the context of professional and personal development fostered through mentorship during this transformative ABER experience.

I analyze female coming-of-age's subjectivity foundations in Habíamos ganado la guerra (2008) by Esther Tusquets. She discusses socializing during girlhood looking into adulthood under the civil uneasiness of post-Civil War Spain. Her voice remodels her conflicting identity and her cultural imbalance through a “female counter-narrative.”

Her memories becomes a problem solving mechanism for her anxiety and self-doubts derivative from conflicts between her maturity process and the established manual for female behavior of General Franco’s Spain. She reclaims her true subjectivity and moral agency with the written word. Therefore, fictional memoir equates to a valuable remodeling of the female subject.

George Henry Lewes, The Real Man Of Science Behind George Eliot’S Fictional Pedants, Beverley Rilett

This paper demonstrates that George Eliot drew on George Henry Lewes’s actual experience as an emerging scientist in her depiction of two fictional scholars, Edward Casaubon of Middlemarch and Proteus Merman, a lesser-known character from the chapter entitled “How We Encourage Research” in her final work, Impressions of Theophrastus Such. After Thomas Huxley published a devastating review of Lewes’s first book of science, Comte’s Philosophy of the Sciences, the evidence suggests that Lewes became highly focused on disproving his critics and earning lasting recognition as a scientist, a feat he expected to achieve with his five-volume series, Problems …
