They Throw Pebbles In Our Garden: Women And Consumerism In The Soviet Union From Lenin To Khrushchev, Lyudmila Austin
They Throw Pebbles In Our Garden: Women And Consumerism In The Soviet Union From Lenin To Khrushchev, Lyudmila Austin
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
My work provides a background to gender equality in the Soviet Union from its inception, the nascent Lenin era, the autocratic Stalin era and it culminates with a focus on the Khrushchev regime. My work demonstrates that although the Khrushchev era sought to ameliorate women's double burden of work and domestic care, significant gains, in the form of economic independence and gender parity, were never achieved. My research reveals that the Khrushchev era, in an attempt to peacefully compete with the West, condoned traditional gender norms and encouraged feminine aestheticism. My research illustrates how the Post-Stalin era, which became more …
Breaking News: A Woman Is Running, Bridget F. Cummings
Breaking News: A Woman Is Running, Bridget F. Cummings
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
As women are still underrepresented in legislative offices, it is important to examine the road it takes for them to get there. Many scholars have explored gender bias in the media when covering female candidates for elected office. Fowler and Lawless (2009) uncover bias in media coverage of candidates between 1990 and 1997 in Looking for Sex in All the Wrong Places: Press Coverage and the Electoral Fortunes of Gubernatorial Candidates. This paper replicates the method used by Fowler and Lawless (2009) to examine gubernatorial candidates between 2008 and 2014. The independent variable in my research is the gender bias …
Intro To Intros: Victorian Literature In Brief, Leah Kind
Intro To Intros: Victorian Literature In Brief, Leah Kind
Classics of British Literature
Often, teachers struggle with a way to introduce students to a large canon (such as Victorian Literature) without overwhelming them with a heavy reading load. Many teachers can also not expect that students will read outside of class, and cannot devote great swaths of time to in-class reading. This lesson seeks to introduce students to some exemplary representational examples of Victorian literature by reading a portion of the novel’s first chapter, and allowing them to discuss what they have seen, analyze, make predictions, and draw conclusions, based on their reading. This lesson is most suitable for students who have already …

Blurred Lines: Gender In Advertising, Leah Kind
Blurred Lines: Gender In Advertising, Leah Kind
Other Voices
By the time they reach high school, students have been so deluged by both media and advertising messages that they may have become somewhat immune to them. Looking at ads under a focus of gender studies can illuminate the ways that many of the messages and themes challenge, support, or prolong certain established gender norms. Students will examine images from two ad campaigns, either from a 2014 Nine West campaign, or a 2011 Christian Louboutin campaign (both featuring women’s shoes), and discuss how the image contributes to, defies, or introduces new gender roles. Both of these ad campaigns feature themes …

The Economic And Financial Effect Of Single Parent Homes, Douglas Sidey
The Economic And Financial Effect Of Single Parent Homes, Douglas Sidey
Senior Honors Theses
A crisis is facing the American population today because of the growing prevalence of single parent homes. This single parenthood produces a cyclical nature in which the families that get started have a hard time removing themselves from the patterns and problems of this cycle. This is due in large part to the financial issues that a family will face due to the divorce from, or loss of, a spouse. These financial issues affect not only the parent that is raising children alone, but it affects the children, the spouse that has left, and the economy at large. This phenomenon, …

Creating, Developing, And Marketing A Themed Entertainment Attraction, Ruben Rodriguez
Whittier Scholars Program
This senior project is an examination of various theme parks and movies that the author analyzes in order to derive inspiration for creating his own theme park attraction. Throughout the paper the author illustrates to the reader, through comparison of popular attractions such as those in Disneyland and Universal Studios, the kind of ride that he has in mind. There is a particular emphasis on aspects such as fantasy, storytelling, as well as accuracy to scientific facts concerning space and our solar system. The project ends with a description of the ride, the technology involved in its creation, its storyline, …
