A Linguistic Phenomenon: Code-Switching In Media And Advertisement, Rebecca E. Cline Tuck May 2015

A Linguistic Phenomenon: Code-Switching In Media And Advertisement, Rebecca E. Cline Tuck

Symposium of Student Scholars

The purpose of this paper is to examine the linguistic phenomenon of code-switching in two different forms of communication: social media and traditional advertising. Code-switching, most common among bilinguals, is the practice of expressing ourselves in conversation, the act of altering the languages we speak, or the ability to switch back and forth between two different languages simultaneously. We all do it, albeit, inadvertently at times, whether it is to fit in, stand out, be understood, emphasize a point, or deliver a message. Throughout this paper, I will analyze code-switching found in a popular actress’ social media account as well …

The Physical Death Of Jesus Christ: The “Swoon Theory” And The Medical Response, Kate Hill May 2015

The Physical Death Of Jesus Christ: The “Swoon Theory” And The Medical Response, Kate Hill

Spring 2015, Faith and Science

The Crucifixion and the Resurrection are two of the most important foundational elements of the Christian religion. There are some skeptics, however, who believe that the Crucifixion was not “completed”, and that Jesus never actually died on the cross. If this hypothesis were true, it would call the entire Christian system of beliefs into question. One theory of this sort that grew in popularity with 18th century rationalists became known as the “Resuscitation Theory”, or “Swoon Theory”. Put simply, this theory states that Jesus did not actually die during the Crucifixion. Rather, he simply “swooned” and fell unconscious while …

White Bread Girl: Real Life Chronicles Of A Twenty-Something, Rose Aschebrock May 2015

White Bread Girl: Real Life Chronicles Of A Twenty-Something, Rose Aschebrock

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Hi! Did you pick up this project book, see the title and immediately wonder, "What is a White Bread Girl anyway?"

Good question. I like you.

There are so many books aimed at the 20something category claiming to represent my generation and miserably failing.

Maybe I fall into a 20something minority category but I don’t enjoy eating pizza at 2am like Lena Dunham in her book Not That kind of Girl, I don’t like eating nothing and drinking everything like The Betches do in their book Nice is Just a Place in France and I’m not a fan of …

The Next Time The World Is Going Downhill: America And The 1983 Ethiopian Famine, Bethany Sharpe May 2015

The Next Time The World Is Going Downhill: America And The 1983 Ethiopian Famine, Bethany Sharpe

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

In 1983, a massive famine struck Ethiopia. Bred by a complex array of factors, thousands of men, women, and children experienced the painful effects of this humanitarian disaster as bodies weakened and widespread death took place. Throughout the famine, an unlikely partnership took place between the Communist leader Chairman Mengistu Haile Mariam and the staunchly anti-Communist White House.[1] The partnership allowed each nation to pursue strategic foreign policy goals; the United States sought to undermine the socialist PMGSE through humanitarian aid while Mengistu attempted to salvage his government’s international reputation. Soon, global attention swirled around the issue and unlikely …

Music In Syracuse: The Hidden Gem Of The Snowy City, Amanda Winograd May 2015

Music In Syracuse: The Hidden Gem Of The Snowy City, Amanda Winograd

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This project explores the surprisingly thriving music culture in Syracuse, NY. In my years here, I have heard many students complain about the city and express that it has little to offer. My own experience contradicts that idea. I’ve found a thriving cultural community here, especially within the realm of live music. I was surprised to find such a thriving music scene when I had heard so many negative things about the city of Syracuse, so I decided to explore the paradox of Syracuse’s reputation versus the reality. I entered into the Syracuse music scene with a camera in hand …

Word On The Street: Examining What Characteristics Of A Street Paper And Its Host City Best Contribute To Success, Nicole Gorny May 2015

Word On The Street: Examining What Characteristics Of A Street Paper And Its Host City Best Contribute To Success, Nicole Gorny

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

By creating opportunities for microentrepreneurship, street papers have been tackling homelessness and poverty in U.S. cities since the late 1980s. Homeless or low-income vendors purchase these social justice-oriented publications for a fraction of the cover price, and then resell them on street corners for profit. By 2015 the self-help model had spread to 35 U.S. cities, according to the International Network of Street Papers. These cities range significantly in characteristics such as population size, climate, geographic location and political atmosphere.

Drawing on interviews with more than 20 editors, staff and vendors at North American street papers, I have identified five …

A Town Without A Market, Saakshi Joshi May 2015

A Town Without A Market, Saakshi Joshi

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

The story is an attempt at experimental writing narrated through the perspective of the market of a drowned town. It is based on my on-going ethnographic doctoral research in the Garhwal region of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, India. The construction of a hydro-electric dam in the region led to the complete submergence of a central town and thirty-five villages while seventy-four villages were partially submerged. Nearly one hundred thousand people were affected, leading to forced displacement and subsequent re-settlement across the state. The market remembers its life as it now sits at the bottom of the dam reservoir.

Capitalism And "Blithedale": Exploring Hawthorne's Response To 19th Century American Capitalism, Kyle G. Phillips May 2015

Capitalism And "Blithedale": Exploring Hawthorne's Response To 19th Century American Capitalism, Kyle G. Phillips

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

With the intensive migration of the American public from rural to urban settings in the mid-nineteenth century came many logistical problems. Chief among them was the contention that the city was a place fundamentally void of, or else lax with morals. The examination into these issues explores why Americans felt the city was a catalyst for immorality, specifically examining prostitution and the exploitation of the working poor. It seeks to answer these questions within the framework of the anchor text, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Blithedale Romance”.

Why Summer Camp Matters: The Benefits Of Working At Summer Camp On Future Employment, Alec Michael Jacobson May 2015

Why Summer Camp Matters: The Benefits Of Working At Summer Camp On Future Employment, Alec Michael Jacobson

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

After the school year ends, many students have the freedom to choose how they would like to spend their summer. Internships have become an increasingly popular option for students who seek to improve their resumes and boost their chances of landing a job out of college. This project, however, takes a look at one of the major alternatives to an internship, the summer camp counselor job, in order to demonstrate what it is exactly that camp counselors do and why this job has been critical to the success of so many individuals. Although this project does attempt to place value …

Learning To Flip The Framework: A Multigenre, Autoethnographic Account Of One Student's Experience With Gradual Release Of Responsibility, Julie Theresa Saltisiak May 2015

Learning To Flip The Framework: A Multigenre, Autoethnographic Account Of One Student's Experience With Gradual Release Of Responsibility, Julie Theresa Saltisiak

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For this Capstone project, the success of using gradual release of responsibility as an everyday instructional framework is examined, using one Syracuse University English Education major’s experience as evidence. This project acts as an explanation for the learning that has occurred surrounding gradual release of responsibility in this student’s college experience. Using an autoethnographic approach allows for this student’s personal experiences to be regarded as strong data in order to better understand the larger experience of all Education majors working with the gradual release of responsibility framework in the School of Education at Syracuse University. This project also uses multiple …

Women Breaking Ground: A Website Profiling Women Entrepreneurs In Syracuse, Jill Comoletti May 2015

Women Breaking Ground: A Website Profiling Women Entrepreneurs In Syracuse, Jill Comoletti

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My Honors Capstone project is a website titled Women Breaking Ground (www.womenbreakingground.com). On my website, I published 10 feature-length profiles on women entrepreneurs in Syracuse. Each profile features photographs and an interactive map to show readers the location of the woman-owned business. This project is relevant because the number of women business owners in the United States is increasing; in fact, women are opening 1,200 new businesses every day. I hope that my project inspires even more women to pursue their passion and become entrepreneurs.
