The Church, Scripture, And Adaptation: Resoluteness In Essentials, Adaptation In Peripherals - Part 1 Of 2, Nicholas P. Miller

The role the church plays in interpreting, applying, and adapting scriptural teaching is fraught with concern, at least for Protestants. The sixteenth-century Reformation was based, in a good part, on the principle that the Bible, and not the church, was the ultimate authority in matters of doctrine and practice. The Protestant Reformers contended that the church had erred from scriptural truths because human authority and tradition had been placed over Scripture. One of the ways in which this had happened was allowing the papacy to be the ultimate interpreter of biblical truth.

This article focuses on undergraduate research and mentoring through the lens of an “Ethnography of the University” course that engages students in writing and researching for local change. At our institution (Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin), “Ethnography of the University” is a writing-intensive English course in which students conduct semester-long, original, mixed-method research projects about some aspect of their undergraduate experience. Students move from asking questions of interest and importance to the campus community through stages of data collection and analysis and toward final reporting through multiple means: (1) article-length papers, (2) in-class presentations, and (3) research posters. Students present …

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Democracy: Comedy And Politics In The Twentieth Century, Robin Haynie
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Democracy: Comedy And Politics In The Twentieth Century, Robin Haynie
History Theses
This research traces transformations in parody and satire in the ongoing symbiotic relationship between comedy and politics in order to entertain, inform, and provide a voice for the American people within the political system of the 20th century. This thesis juxtaposes political comedians Finley Peter Dunne, Will Rogers, and Mort Sahl, and the programs, Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Laugh-In, and Saturday Night Live, with the presidents that were active during these years: William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Collectively, …
Fitzgerald's And Hemingway's Muses Of Disillusionment, Allison Rogers
Fitzgerald's And Hemingway's Muses Of Disillusionment, Allison Rogers
English Department Theses
This paper examines how the main female characters in three F. Scott Fitzgerald novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, and Tender is the Night, and three Ernest Hemingway novels, The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea, function as muses of disillusionment for the protagonists of those works. First, I analyze the extent to which each of the protagonist's female complements can be defined as a muse in accordance with qualities ascribed to the ancient Greek mythological muses. Subsequently, I assess how each muse functions in her respective novel first to …
“孟子深於《易》”論, Hung Kan Chan
“孟子深於《易》”論, Hung Kan Chan
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Xingwu Xu
Xingwu Xu
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Design Thinking And The Internal: A Case Study, Meredith James
Design Thinking And The Internal: A Case Study, Meredith James
Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design Faculty Publications and Presentations
‘Design Thinking’ commonly refers to a set of cognitive activities one engages in during a design process. These activities are regularly applied by design practitioners to external problems – often in the role of mediation between ourselves and our environments, objects, and information (‘material culture’). A designer’s efforts are intended to solve the problems of others, but this externalization is only one half of the equation. Rarely is such energy and focus turned inwards mastering the self first. Students from ART 111: Design Thinking (fall 2014 and winter 2015) at Portland State University investigated how specific tactics and tools of …

M-1: The Mealy Open Source Custom Midi Controller, Garrett Leung, Darren O. Mistica
Electrical Engineering
With the high price of large mixing consoles, aspiring artists are restricted to using a mouse to control digital facsimiles of knobs, faders, switches, and buttons. Though using the software controls is considered a simple task, dedicated hardware allows for tactile, visual, and utility. At a low cost, the heart of the MTech M-1 can be customized and placed into any shell with any combination of controls as possible with the underlying platform.
Modern MIDI controllers require significant physical space due to their preset button layout and space consuming setups. Despite their high price, modern MIDI controllers have only one …
Maybe Irish Voters Actually Were Swayed By Their Church, Una M. Cadegan
Maybe Irish Voters Actually Were Swayed By Their Church, Una M. Cadegan
History Faculty Publications
It’s almost always more incorrect than correct to say “Church” when you mean “hierarchy.” It’s especially misleading in the case of same-sex marriage, and Catholic support thereof.
The vocal public insistence of much of the hierarchy (Vatican, Irish, US) on the impossibility and the danger of same-sex marriage represents a dead end in Catholic moral theology. This is not to undercut the entirety of the moral theology — far from it. The notion that humans are created for relationships, that the power of procreation is deeply and sacredly connected to the love between men and women, that stable, loving families …

Using Stories As The Landscape Of Writing: A Case Study Of Mentor Texts In The Elementary Classroom, Christine Mcdowell
Using Stories As The Landscape Of Writing: A Case Study Of Mentor Texts In The Elementary Classroom, Christine Mcdowell
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I investigate the way in which mentor texts are defined and implemented by four elementary classroom teachers within one school district, and how this mode of instruction allows for an increase in teacher autonomy while still addressing Common Core State Standards. This project focuses on each participant as they share a common goal in writing instruction while maintaining their teaching identity and curricular freedom.
One goal of this study is to provide the educational theory that supports mentor text instruction that is missing from the movement. Many teaching guides exist that explain the concept of mentor texts, …

Graphic Communication
The purpose of this study was to determine the best user interface design practices for an iOS mobile application created for Pre-R, a local start-up company that offers physician house calls and telemedicine services throughout San Luis Obispo. The study included initial background research on best user interface design practices, mapping out and implementing the entire process of designing for mobile applications, conducting usability tests on potential users, and making changes according to the test results. Usability tests allowed for a greater understanding of the effectiveness of Pre-R’s mobile interface design prototype. Results from the usability tests have indicated a …

Graduation Announcements & Save The Date Cards For Asia Croson Photography, Olivia Goree
Graphic Communication
The purpose of this study was to create graduation announcements cards to serve as a value added service for Asia Croson Photography. Research was conducted on the recent growth of photography, the difficulty of starting a photography business, and Asia’s competitors in the area. The current trends in graduation announcements among college females was also researched before designs were made. Once designs were brainstormed and executed, approval was received from Asia Croson and files were sent to her to personalize for her clients. Clients were also sent surveys asking them what card designs they were interested in purchasing and why …
A Bard Unkend: Selected Poems In The Scottish Dialect By Gavin Turnbull, Patrick G. Scott
A Bard Unkend: Selected Poems In The Scottish Dialect By Gavin Turnbull, Patrick G. Scott
Faculty Publications
The Scottish-born poet and actor Gavin Turnbull (1765-1816), a younger contemporary of Robert Burns, published two volumes of poetry in Scotland before emigrating in 1795 to the United States, where he settled in Charleston, South Carolina. This selection draws attention to a neglected aspect of Turnbull's work, his writing in Scots. Drawing on advance research for the first collected edition of Turnbull's poetry, the selection includes verse in Scots from all phases of his career, including poetry in Scots published in America, together with a biographical introduction and background notes.
