Exploration Of Russian Harp Repertoire, Eliza Weed, Dr. David Day
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I was given an ORCA Grant to research the Russian Harp Repertoire. The grant allowed me to travel to Switzerland for a two-week intensive of workshops, lectures, performances and master classes with Russian harp masters Irina Zingg and Milda Agazarian. While I was at this intensive I not only learned an extraordinary amount about the subject of Russian Harp Repertoire, but also was able to study Russian technique and the pedagogy thereof. My time in Switzerland has already paid dividends in my prowess as a musician and I am confident and excited to share what I have learned with my …

Digital Space Art (History?), France Languérand
Digital Space Art (History?), France Languérand
Artl@s Bulletin
Invited by ARTL@S Bulletin as visual artist, France Languérand opted for a first-person text introducing her artworks—which develop into the digital sphere, questionning their own sustainability— and recounting the evolution of her relationship the digital space. This walkthrough is guided by her current thoughts about numbers and coding system as creative tools. Languérand’s pieces are only partially visible in the physical world but exist entirely in the digital space.

Les Rues Des Tableaux. Géographie Du Marché De L'Art Parisien (1815-1955), Léa Saint-Raymond, Félicie De Maupeou, Julien Cavero
Artl@s Bulletin
Continuation of a first socioeconomic analysis of the "art dealers" in Paris between 1815 and 1955 (Artl@s Bulletin 2, no. 2), this paper presents the results of a spatial study of the Parisian art market at that time. Departing from serial geographical data given by a homogeneous source, the Bottin du commerce, we mapped a 140 years spatial evolution of the "art dealers", using a geocoding system with composite locators. The article exposes the spatial dynamics of this market and studies them in a multi-scalar way, making the connection between the global evolution of the Parisian economy and …

A Research-Based Model For Digital Mapping And Art History: Notes From The Field, Paul B. Jaskot, Anne Kelly Knowles, Andrew Wasserman, Stephen Whiteman, Benjamin Zweig
Artl@s Bulletin
Most digital mapping in art history today divides the research process from the visualization aspects of the project. This problem became the focus of a summer institute that Paul Jaskot and Anne Kelly Knowles ran at Middlebury College with the support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Our article both reports on the institute and suggests how research questions can complement digital mapping methods. We conclude with three case studies of spatial questions in art history and discuss the Fellows’ use of GIS to explore examples from Qing Dynasty China, medieval Gotland, and contemporary New York City.
Provincializing Paris. The Center-Periphery Narrative Of Modern Art In Light Of Quantitative And Transnational Approaches, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Provincializing Paris. The Center-Periphery Narrative Of Modern Art In Light Of Quantitative And Transnational Approaches, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
The alternative “centre‐periphery” is essential to the myth of modern art and its historiography. Even though Postcolonial studies have denounced the implications of such geopolitical hierarchies, as long as our objects remain centred on one capital city and within national boundaries, it will be difficult to escape the hierarchical paradigm that makes Paris and New York the successive capital cities of Modernism. This paper highlights how approaches focusing on different scales of analysis—from the quantitative and geographic to the monographic—challenge the supposed centrality of Paris through 1945.

Wired! And Visualizing Venice: Scaling Up Digital Art History, Kristin Huffman Lanzoni, Mark James-Vrooman Olson, Victoria E. Szabo
Artl@s Bulletin
This article focuses on Visualizing Venice, an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural collaboration that engages in mapping, 3-D modeling, and multimedia representations of historical change in Venice, Italy. Through a “laboratory” approach that integrates students and faculty in multi-year research teams, we ask new questions and pursue emerging lines of inquiry about architectural monuments, their relation to the larger urban setting, and the role of sculptural and painted decoration in sacred spaces. Our practice of digital art history transforms both teaching and research and provides new means for communicating knowledge to a broad public.
Change Over Time: Neatline And The Study Of Architectural History, Lisa A. Reilly
Change Over Time: Neatline And The Study Of Architectural History, Lisa A. Reilly
Artl@s Bulletin
This article discusses how the usual study of architecture from the perspective of a single moment in time, usually the moment of its creation is limiting. New methodologies make it possible to add to the current rich variety of approaches available to the architectural historian in order to consider the dynamic history of the forms we study. This problem can be resolved in part through the use of digital tools, in particular Neatline, (www.neatline.org) which allows the viewer to see and understand how a building changes over time.
Towards A Spatial (Digital) Art History, Catherine Dossin
Towards A Spatial (Digital) Art History, Catherine Dossin
Artl@s Bulletin
Among the numerous possibilities offered by the Digital Humanities, digital mapping is certainly among the most promising for art history. It is a rather simple yet efficient way to explore the large amount of data and databases which are available to the discipline but that are often underutilized. New mapping technologies allow us to work with art history’s big data serially and spatially, and to diffuse the result of our research through attractive and compelling visualizations.

Preserving Wmu’S Musical Heritage: Digitizing Aging Magnetic Tape Audio Recordings, Marianne Swierenga, Christina Doane
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
Western Michigan University has decades worth of unique recorded content on aging magnetic media. WMU’s School of Music has a particularly rich collection of recordings featuring student and faculty ensembles, visiting artist performances, and graduate recitals. Facing the possibility of losing these invaluable recorded sound artifacts through obsolescence or decay, the University Libraries realized we could wait no longer and needed to develop a preservation and digitization strategy to ensure long term access.

"... it may be tempting to conclude that technology is neutral and that we either use it appropriately or misuse it. While it is true that each of us has control of, and is responsible for, how we use technology, it is a dangerous misconception to believe that our technologies are completely benign. Every human made tool from a sharpened stick to a microwave oven is biased. Each encourages certain behaviors and habits, while making others more difficult."

Happy Valley, Richard C. Crepeau
Happy Valley, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Documentary film can be one of the most effective forms of journalism when done right. “Happy Valley” directed by Amir Bar-Lev is an impressive, haunting, and powerful example of documentary at its very best. The subject on its surface is the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal at Penn State University. Bar-Lev follows the story from the first revelations of November 2011 through the cascading fallout over the next year.

The British-American Imperial Agenda In Iraq: The Oil And Railway Line From Kirkuk To Haifa, 1920-1932, Melinda Cohoon
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
By using data from the Records of Department of State Relating to the Internal Affairs of Asia, 1910-1929 and the Iraqi Administration Reports, in regards to the railway and pipeline infrastructure, along with integral secondary source material like Peter Sluglett’s Britain in Iraq: Contriving King and Country (2007, 2nd ed.), this study addresses the concept of identity among the Sunni Arab elite as well as Kurds within Iraq, who were embedded within this new imperial reality of oil and railways between 1920 and 1929. This study has found that the U.S. had a covert interest in the shaping of …

Women In Philosophy: A Qualitative Assessment Of Experiences At The Undergraduate Level, Crystal Nicole Lilith Aymelek
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
The underrepresentation of women in the field of philosophy has been a major concern for women in the discipline for at least the past ten years, and is increasingly gaining attention within academia. Current research at the undergraduate level suggests male and female enrollment occurs in relatively proportionate numbers in introductory philosophy courses but women’s enrollment dramatically decreases with the progression to upper division courses (Paxton, Figdor & Tiberius, 2012). To date, very little research has focused on the experiences of women philosophy majors at the undergraduate level. The present study conducted in-depth interviews with women who were either senior …

Christian Lady Rhetorica: Americanization Of Marian Rhetoric In Early American Sentimental And Seduction Novels, Stephanie Laszik
Christian Lady Rhetorica: Americanization Of Marian Rhetoric In Early American Sentimental And Seduction Novels, Stephanie Laszik
English Department Theses
In the larger scope of religious feminine iconography, the Virgin Mary stands out as a vessel of cultural rhetoric. As medieval studies in religion, culture, and language indicate, the Virgin Mary's biblical speeches, combined with her image as a mother and follower of God, create a unique opportunity for authors of fiction to explore the Marian manifestations in their characters. This project illuminates the occurrences of Marian Rhetoric as they are found in American sentimental and seduction novels as tools for cultural change. The American sentimental and seduction novels discussed in this project, show a need for the cultural commentary …

Ophelia And The Feminine Construct, Lilly E. Romestant
Ophelia And The Feminine Construct, Lilly E. Romestant
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
In Shakespeare's celebrated tragic masterpiece, Hamlet, one of the most controversial and seminal characters, Ophelia, continues to have a heavy influence on contemporary culture today in some unexpected ways. Her prevalence in mainstream media––including film, literature, drama, and music homages––validates not only her importance now but also reimagines and reinforces her parallel importance at the time of her debut in 1603. Her association with global teenage culture, suicide, and mental illness, puts her in the unique position of being heralded, generation after generation, as an icon of depression in female youth. This can be both positive and negative, as …
An Essenceless Creation: An Investigation Of Theistic Existentialism, John T. Lane
An Essenceless Creation: An Investigation Of Theistic Existentialism, John T. Lane
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Abstract: The primary objection that most Mainstream Christian theologies, most notably Calvinist theologies, hold against existentialism is that existentialism is incompatible with mainstays of theistic dogma, namely the theistic perception of sin and the concept of Imago Dei. However, upon closer examination, it would appear that existentialism’s rejection of essences is not wholly incompatible with all Mainstream theist doctrine. In this paper I will probe the alleged inconsistencies between Mainstream theist doctrines and the fundamental existentialist tenets of “existence precedes essence” and existential angst. Furthermore, I will argue that these two schools of thought are not just compatible, but also …
Quixano As Reader, Quixote As Author, Stephanie Bowar
Quixano As Reader, Quixote As Author, Stephanie Bowar
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Cervantes' 17th century novel, Don Quixote, details the story of passive, stagnant Alonso Quixano, who then abruptly declares himself Don Quixote, a chivalric knight who goes on to fight passionately for his identity and reality. In his dying moments, however, he once more becomes Alonso Quixano, just as abruptly renouncing his previously-claimed identity. Cervantes' work demands discussions of reality, identity, and above all, authenticity. The following paper explores the differences between Alonso Quixano and Don Quixote on these fronts, and argues that Don Quixote, author of his own life, demonstrates authenticity, while Alonso Quixano does not.
Models Of Time Travel And Their Consequences, Antonio M. Mantica
Models Of Time Travel And Their Consequences, Antonio M. Mantica
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
How do we travel through time? We know that we can move forward in it (we have no choice), but can we jump forward in time? Can we go backward in time? It also gives rise to other troubling questions: is time measurable in distinct increments, or does it flow continuously? In "Models of Time Travel and their Consequences," Antonio Mantica walks the reader through current understandings of how time functions in Einstein's universe and proposes three distinct models to explain it. Following that, he provides a list of experiments to credit or discredit the models. Appropriate for audiences of …
Where Do They Go: Christian Faith And Belonging In Gay Literature, Samuel D. J. Ernest
Where Do They Go: Christian Faith And Belonging In Gay Literature, Samuel D. J. Ernest
Honors Projects
This exploration of Christianity, family, homosexuality, and running away in twentieth-century literature is divided into two essays. In the first essay, G. K. Chesterton’s “twitch upon a thread” provides a way of understanding the flight of Sebastian in Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh and Jeanette in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. After they escape their mothers and home communities, Sebastian’s and Jeanette’s searches for a vocation eventually bring them back to where they started, in one sense or another. Sebastian finds his place within the Church, at a monastery; Jeanette travels back to her parents’ house …
