Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff

Producer's Notes is a vividly written personal history of a theatre department that within ten years of its founding became Ohio’s dominant undergraduate theatre program. Three times cited by the Ohio Board of Higher Education the department was awarded Program Excellence Awards, which came with prizes of more than one and one half million dollars. It is today considered one of nation’s top five exclusively undergraduate theatre programs. The leader of a talented and hardworking group of faculty is Abe J Bassett who predicted in1970 that the Theatre at Wright State would be recognized as the best theatre program in …

The Orientalism Of Edgar Allan Poe: The Allure Of The Middle East In Al-Aaraaf, Sohaib Kamal Al-Kamal Jul 2015

The Orientalism Of Edgar Allan Poe: The Allure Of The Middle East In Al-Aaraaf, Sohaib Kamal Al-Kamal

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis explores the Orientalist discourse in four of Edgar Allan Poe's poems and two of his prose essays. The major aspects of Orientalism examined in Poe's works rely on the theoretical ideas of Edward Said's Orientalism and other ideas developed by important Arab writers. Said and other Arab writers agree that Islam is the locus of any study of Orientalism. This thesis focuses on the major role of Oriental imagery that it plays in Poe's early poems. It also examines two of his prose essays to help understand central aspects of Poe's orientalia which are also reflected in his …

The Elite Of The Elites: The U.S. Marine Raider Battalions, 1942-1944: A Case Study In Elite Military Organizations, Stephen Mark Houseknecht Jul 2015

The Elite Of The Elites: The U.S. Marine Raider Battalions, 1942-1944: A Case Study In Elite Military Organizations, Stephen Mark Houseknecht

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps activated the Marine Raider battalions, the first American special forces units of World War II. However, the introduction of an elite subculture within the ranks of the Marine Corps, which already prided itself on being the nation's elite fighting force, resulted in conflicting cultures and competing identities. Many Marines felt that the creation of an elite within the ranks of the elite was superfluous and undesirable. The preferential treatment and widespread publicity accorded to the Raiders, combined with the Raiders' sense of exceptionalism and claims to superiority, garnered resentment among other Marines. Ultimately, the …

Review: 'Death And Changing Rituals: Function And Meaning In Ancient Funerary Practices', Dorian Borbonus Jul 2015

Review: 'Death And Changing Rituals: Function And Meaning In Ancient Funerary Practices', Dorian Borbonus

History Faculty Publications

The fourteen conference papers in this collection explore chronological changes in funerary rituals and advance theoretical approaches that help explain such changes. The case studies range from the Mesolithic to the Early Modern periods and concentrate on European contexts. They are arranged chronologically, with four contributions on prehistory, one Etruscan, three Roman imperial, two late antique, three medieval and one early modern. The opening chapter briefly sets out five themes that characterize, to varying degrees, all subsequent contributions: change versus continuity, the relationship between practice and belief, the treatment and deposition of bodies, burial location and grave goods, and ritual …

Sinologism: An Alternative To Orientalism And Postcolonialism, Steven Burik Jul 2015

Sinologism: An Alternative To Orientalism And Postcolonialism, Steven Burik

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

At the end of the book, Gu defines Sinologism as an undeclared but tacitly administered institutionalization of the ways of observing China from the perspective of Western epistemology that refuses, or is reluctant, to view China on its own terms, and of doing scholarship on Chinese materials and producing knowledge on Chinese civilization in terms of Western methodology that tends to disregard the real conditions of China and reduce the complexity of Chinese civilization into simplistic patterns of development modelled on those of the West. While comparative philosophers can sympathize with the idea that in the humanities and to a …

Rise Of The "Nones", Dave Page Jul 2015

Rise Of The "Nones", Dave Page

Great Commission Research Journal

The number of Americans (“nones”) who do not identify with any religion continues to grow at a rapid pace with Millennials leading the way. Is this growing trend a cause for concern? This article argues that it is cause for great concern and that churches cannot keep doing what they’ve always done if they expect to reach this unique cultural group. Nones are spiritual but not religious and are very different than seekers. In order to reach nones for Christ, churches must 1) Become mission minded; 2) Focus on conversion growth; 3) Educate themselves on this new group 4) Utilize …

The Strategic Nature Of Urban Ministry, Alan Mcmahan Jul 2015

The Strategic Nature Of Urban Ministry, Alan Mcmahan

Great Commission Research Journal

The explosive growth of cities around the world provides an unprecedented and strategic opportunity for the advancement of the gospel and the expansion of the church. Ten overlapping realities found in urban contexts are explored in this article to show how the world is dramatically changing the context in which most people live. The enormous advantages offered by urban ministry are then examined to show how the church can extend its reach, identify and reach receptive people and influence the culture of a region or a nation.

Global Church Growth Through Multicultural Mission Teams, Parnell M. Lovelace Jr. Jul 2015

Global Church Growth Through Multicultural Mission Teams, Parnell M. Lovelace Jr.

Great Commission Research Journal

The globalization of ministry outreach is emerging as the church is expanding its reach beyond the local community. As a result, many congregations have embraced multicultural mission team development. As models of leadership are capturing opportunities to develop strategic liaisons globally with various nations politically, educationally, financially, and socially, there appears to be an opportunity to implement or receive initiatives that mutually benefit both the hosting country and the serving organization. These opportunities are available to the local church or a consortium of local churches. The growth of the church and its impact is readily observed through the implementation and …

There Is No I In Team: A Look At Gender Equality In Collegiate Athletic Attendance, Emmie Trull Jul 2015

There Is No I In Team: A Look At Gender Equality In Collegiate Athletic Attendance, Emmie Trull

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

As a former student-athlete, every part of my collegiate career was perfect. As a softball player, I dealt with stereotypes my entire life from not being taken seriously on the field or not considered a real athlete because I was female. As I was growing up, women were becoming more well-known and accepted in athletics which made things easier, but still difficult. One aspect that was always lacking at games I competed in was the atmosphere. Our parents always supported us by attending, but very few students or other fans attended. It was extremely evident that people would rather attend …

Cooking And Eating The Other: Contemporary Representations Of Domestic Workers In Popular Media, Ashley Mcfarland Jul 2015

Cooking And Eating The Other: Contemporary Representations Of Domestic Workers In Popular Media, Ashley Mcfarland

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

The mass media governs relations among social groups, manufactures political sentiment and shapes opinions on economic relations between individuals to reproduce a self-perpetuating system of power for a minute elite. The construction and organized distribution of manipulated cultural images that communicate embellished or patently false messages about a social group is central to the success of a capitalist economic system. This thesis reveals how media production negatively influences public perception of housework and the women who perform the labor and thwarts efforts to obtain and enforce legislation to protect native and immigrant domestic workers. Using contemporary representations from The Help …

History, Memory, And The Indian Struggle For Autonomy In The Seventeenth-Century Hudson Valley, Jason R. Sellers Jul 2015

History, Memory, And The Indian Struggle For Autonomy In The Seventeenth-Century Hudson Valley, Jason R. Sellers

History and American Studies Articles

This essay uses treaty records, council minutes, personal correspondence, and travel narratives to argue that Hudson Valley Indians seized on the 1664 English conquest of New Netherland to try to position Natives and newcomers as independent members of an extended community sharing a common past and landscape. Formulating a history emphasizing peace, preserving the memory of that past through ritual actions, and involving English colonists in processes that rested on that history, Native Americans sought to integrate the newcomers into their existing network of social relations and a physical landscape that manifested those relations. Meanwhile, English colonists seeking to secure …

Developing A Scale To Measure Reader Self-Perception For Efl Students, Dumrong Adunyarittigun Jul 2015

Developing A Scale To Measure Reader Self-Perception For Efl Students, Dumrong Adunyarittigun

PASAA

The development of a scale for measuring selfperception for readers of English as a foreign language is discussed in this paper. The scale was developed from the four dimensions of self-efficacy theory proposed by Bandura (1977a): progress, observational comparison, social feedback and physiological states. A 36 item scale was developed to measure the four dimensions. Five hundred and fourteen Thai EFL students at the college level completed the scale. Factor analyses and item-total correlations indicated that most of the items best defined their own constructs. Cronbach's alpha internal reliabilities also indicated a strong coherence of the items in measuring their …

A Move Toward Postmethod Pedagogy In The Iranian Efl Context: Panacea Or More Pain?, Parvin Safari, Nasser Rashidi Jul 2015

A Move Toward Postmethod Pedagogy In The Iranian Efl Context: Panacea Or More Pain?, Parvin Safari, Nasser Rashidi

PASAA

Kumaravadivelu's (2003) introduction and development of 'postmethod' led to the demise of methods and a dramatic change in the language teaching profession. In fact, it can be claimed that the arrival of postmethod pedagogy in language teaching might be the reason for the abandonment and replacement of method by context sensitive, pedagogic indicators, and the guiding principles of particularity, practicality and possibility. The literature concerning postmethod pedagogy has highlighted that much of the research centers on the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings, without any consideration of its realization and practical aspects in EFL contexts. So, we tried to unearth English teachers' …

Neurobiology Research Findings: How The Brain Works During Reading, Siusana Kweldju Jul 2015

Neurobiology Research Findings: How The Brain Works During Reading, Siusana Kweldju

PASAA

In the past, neurobiology for reading was identical with neuropathology. Today, however, the advancement of modern neuroimaging techniques has contributed to the understanding of the reading processes of normal individuals. Neurobiology findings today have uncovered and illuminated the fundamental neural mechanism of reading. The findings have helped researchers and educators in the field of reading expand their understanding of the different levels of the reading process for evidence-based reading instruction. The aims of this paper are to provide a review of the results of neuroscience laboratory research for understanding the reading process. First, the subprocesses of reading and the activated …

Idea Sharing: Reporting Verbs In Research Writing: Lessons From Experts, Woravut Jaroongkhongdach Jul 2015

Idea Sharing: Reporting Verbs In Research Writing: Lessons From Experts, Woravut Jaroongkhongdach

PASAA

Using reporting verbs in research writing seems to be a problem for graduate students (or novice researchers) when writing a research paper. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness of students in using reporting verbs. The main argument in this paper is based on the comparison of reporting verbs used by two expert researchers and two Thai novice researchers in the field of applied linguistics. The comparison reveals that reporting verbs used by the experts tend to be both factive (i.e., the current researcher portrays the previous researcher as presenting true information or a correct opinion) and …

The Bosnian Muslims And The Irish Perspective, Gabriel C. Kelly Jul 2015

The Bosnian Muslims And The Irish Perspective, Gabriel C. Kelly

Student Publications

The conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina can be understood in multiple ways, however, the focus of this paper is to examine the perspective of Ireland on the Bosnian Muslims at different levels of society--ranging from the population to international level--from June 01, 1992 to January 31, 1996. Through an analysis of letters to the editor in "The Irish Times," parliamentary debate transcripts, and the Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection located at the University of Pittsburgh's Hillman Library, I have been able to reveal how complex perspectives within a state on a particular issue can be, and how they can vary between …

Eve In Early Reformation Exegesis: The Case Of Iohannes Oecolampadius, Mickey L. Mattox Jul 2015

Eve In Early Reformation Exegesis: The Case Of Iohannes Oecolampadius, Mickey L. Mattox

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Iohannes Oecolampadius stood at the forefront of the Reformation in Basel. He not only worked tirelessly for the reform of the city's churches, but also authored pioneering evangelical works of theology and exegesis. The interpretation of Eve found in his late lectures on Genesis showcases both a new emphasis on Eve's goodness and original equality with Adam, as well as a parallel insistence on her subordination to her husband after the Fall. His conception of husband and wife as partners of equal dignity on the path toward salvation moves in the direction of companionate marriage, but it stops short of …

Dramatizing Power And Resistance: Images Of Women In Pakistani And Indian Alternative Theater, Sobia Mubarak Jul 2015

Dramatizing Power And Resistance: Images Of Women In Pakistani And Indian Alternative Theater, Sobia Mubarak

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes Pakistani and Indian plays that illustrate the nexus of power relations that operate in Pakistan and India to disempower women and the way women resist by creating dialogic spaces or fissures in the exploitative system. I have selected plays by Ajoka Theater in Pakistan and plays dealing with the similar thematic concerns by notable Indian playwrights to explore common grounds and points of departure. I have chosen four images of women depicting diverse modes of oppression associated with women’s bodies that are dealt with in these plays.

Chapter 1 examines Barri/The Acquittal by Ajoka theater, and Mother …

Outside The Lines Of Gilded Age Baseball: Profits, Beer, And The Origins Of The Brotherhood War, Robert Allan Bauer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 1890, members of the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players elected to secede from the National League and form their own organization, which they called the Players League. The players objected to several business practices of the National League, including aspects of the reserve clause in player contracts, the Brush Classification Plan to control their salaries, the buying and selling of players, and fines for various infractions. This dissertation explains how these events combined to produce the revolt by the players at the conclusion of the 1889 season. It also examines various other important aspects of 1880s baseball, including …

The Waking Life Of Winsor Mccay: Social Commentary In A Pilgrim’S Progress By Mr. Bunion, Kirsten A. Mckinney Jul 2015

The Waking Life Of Winsor Mccay: Social Commentary In A Pilgrim’S Progress By Mr. Bunion, Kirsten A. Mckinney

Student Publications

This article suggests that comic scholars and historians of American culture take a closer look at Winsor McCay’s A Pilgrim’s Progress by Mister Bunion. Known as the father of animation and the artistic virtuoso behind the classic children’s comic Little Nemo in Slumberland, McCay actually did most of his comic work for adults. Published in the daily The New York Evening Telegram, McCay’s adult works included Dream of the Rarebit Fiend (1904-1911), A Pilgrim’s Progress by Mr. Bunion (1905-1909) and Poor Jake (1909-1911). McCay signed his work for adults as Silas and all three explored themes rooted in …

World, Earth, Globe: Geophilosophy In Hegel, Nietzsche, And Rosenzweig, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In an interview given a few weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Jacques Derrida interrogates the nature of what is popularly called globalization. In his critique of current concepts of globalization, Derrida points out that the very processes of trade, communication, and transport are producing greater inequalities around the earth, and that these inequalities are spectacular, that is, that the very media essential to the process we call globalization make these inequalities vividly clear. The interview is a rich conspectus of the themes of Derrida's political thought, perhaps most penetrating in his thinking the concepts of the …

Adventist Mission: From Awareness To Engagement—Part 1, Wagner Kuhn, Marcelo Dias Jul 2015

Adventist Mission: From Awareness To Engagement—Part 1, Wagner Kuhn, Marcelo Dias

Faculty Publications

More than 140 years have passed since J. N. Andrews left for Europe as the first official Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) missionary. The decision by the General Conference Mission Board to sponsor “the ablest man in all our ranks,”1 coupled with Andrews’s passion and disposition to face the life-threatening challenges and take a special prophetic message overseas, marked the consolidation of a deep revelation-inspired conviction and established a paradigm for the missionary ethos of the Adventist movement. As we celebrate the past and are challenged by the future, it is time to reflect on the reason for the Seventh-day Adventist presence …

Collaboration, Fieldwork, And Film, Lee Bidgood

ETSU Faculty Works

Excerpt: I never imagined that I would help produce a documentary film based on my ethnographic fieldwork. Meeting documentary filmmaker Shara Lange during new faculty orientation at the university where we were both newly hired eventually led to our film Banjo Romantika (2013)—a full-length feature based on my research on bluegrass music in the Czech Republic, in which I play a key role as writer, producer, and on-screen character. Taking part in this film project has led me to consider how film enriches relationships with field colleagues, providing new opportunities for teaching and learning. I find that collaborations like ours …
