Evril was living a content, independent life in Grenada until her twenties when her older sister died (her grandparents had already passed away) and for the first time Evril had a strong desire to see her mother. Rhetoric And Paradigm Change In Science: Three Case Studies, John B. Eichler Sep 2015

Rhetoric And Paradigm Change In Science: Three Case Studies, John B. Eichler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates, as case studies, three little-known scientific concepts, each put forth by a well-known, respected scientist. In each case the concept suggested challenges an established scientific paradigm and, if correct, would significantly alter our current view of the universe. All three concepts seem to be ripe to invoke a paradigm shift yet none has yet occurred. This study looks at these cases through the lens of (1) the rhetorical arguments used by these scientists and their followers to advance their proposed concepts, and (2) the paradigm shift model as put forth by Thomas Kuhn. A detailed, largely non-technical, …

Car Therapy: An Exploration Of Automotive Culture Through Essays Inspired And Guided By Oral Interviews, Gabriel Decker

The stories will show the influences cars have had over families through time. The stories bring the cars to life. The questions I will answer are: Why this car? and What does it mean to the family that owns it? The stories about the cars and why so much time and effort is being put into them can be inspiring to readers, and I have captured a …

Analyzing The Selfie: Exploring Gender Identity Through Nude Photography, Darby Gieringer

Theses and Dissertations

As the use of photography increases in contemporary society, so does the need to understand the role of self-photography as a form of identity expression. While forms of selfies have existed for centuries, technological advances provide a vehicle through which people can express themselves with complete autonomy, altering power dynamics and traditional expectations of perception. This project utilizes a multimodal, interdisciplinary framework, as it incorporates digital selfies, studio images, and written questionnaires, which are analyzed through Gender Studies and Rhetoric lenses. Twenty people participated in the project, completing nude, faceless selfies and questionnaires to reflect on their experiences. Of those, …

The Poor Of 1984: The Roots Of George Orwell's Final Novel, James M. Lang Sep 2015

The Poor Of 1984: The Roots Of George Orwell's Final Novel, James M. Lang

Ethics Conference

Most American readers know George Orwell as the author of 1984 and Animal Farm, and as such consider him a staunch critic of communism and prophet of the surveillance state. But Orwell spent much of his writing career focused on exploring the cause and nature of poverty, and remained a committed socialist until his death. This lecture will put 1984 within the full context of Orwell’s career, and especially his lifelong criticism of big business and laissez-faire capitalism.

It is certainly true that “seminaries and the church’s clergy in the field can certainly become more effective in their ministry as they combine emotion with cognition, work to balance the activity of both hemispheres, become aware of their biases and the virtues of Christ’s model, develop their empathy, translate their theology into meaning, and apply it in their worship and their lives”

That is good and proper, but on the second Sunday of Easter that really is not the emphasis. Rather this is a call, on this and every day, to be witnesses to Christ’s resurrection, his enthronement at the right hand of God, and the gift of repentance and forgiveness of sins which he gives.
