Finding aid and full text transcript (click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 2947. Letter, 13 January 1862, of Confederate soldier J. J. Williams to his wife Emeline. Writing from Bowling Green, Kentucky, he describes troop strengths and movements in the area, the destruction of railroads and blockading of roads by the Confederates, and an anticipated encounter with Union troops at Green River.

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Musselman Library's Special Collections and College Archives at Gettysburg College involves student workers and interns in our preservation and conservation efforts. The recent addition to the staff of a half-time conservator position has opened up new avenues for training. This has also resulted in additional access points for our students, faculty and other researchers to interact with our collections. This presentation discusses our preservation activities and our new digital collection The Beauty of the Book. It also illustrates how we have engaged student workers in conservation and enhanced cataloging description projects giving them a deeper appreciation for and understanding …

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Musselman Library’s LGBTQ Research Guide, established in 2012, is a resource that goes beyond connecting the library’s collections with the campus community and providing access. This research guide has generated opportunities to grow campus partnerships, foster a student’s interest in librarianship, and create a gateway for research and learning in the LGBTQ community that goes beyond the classroom. In our presentation we will outline the project from its early days as a student project to its current life as collaboration between the library and Gettysburg Colleges’ Office of LGBTQA Advocacy & Education.

Visualizing Fantasy Fiction: Design Of A Class In Digital Scholarship And Visualization, Including Research, Organization And Digital Visualization, That Does Not Require Programming Or It Support, Charles W. Kann

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper outlines a course to integrate digital visualizations into undergraduate research. These visualizations will include mapping and timelines of events, and the ability to hyperlink the events, characters, and story lines in a fantasy fiction story such as Lord of the Rings or A Game of Thrones. The digital scholarship will involve the methodology for collecting, organizing, and representing the data for the visualizations.

The topic for the visualizations in this paper is fantasy fiction; however the methods to develop these visualizations will be applicable to many academic disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences.

Bayle's 'Rorarius,' Leibniz, And Animal Souls, Richard Fry

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Bayle produces a set of three criteria to evaluate views of non-human animal souls. These criteria arise from Bayle’s interaction with the extant Modern views on the topic and are meant to capture features that any successful view will have. Bayle criticizes Leibniz’s view of animal souls at length for its reliance on the theory of pre-established harmony, entering into a long exchange with Leibniz on the topic, but Bayle never explicitly applies his criteria. This leads some (including Leibniz) to conclude that Bayle thinks Leibniz’s view satisfies the criteria. I argue in this paper that Leibniz’s view properly satisfies …
