A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study: The Differences In Attitudes And Opinions On Advance Care Planning Among African, Caucasian, And Latino Americans, Jennifer Sims Jan 2015

A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study: The Differences In Attitudes And Opinions On Advance Care Planning Among African, Caucasian, And Latino Americans, Jennifer Sims

International ResearchScape Journal

The purpose of this study is to identify African American and Latino Americans’ beliefs and attitudes about advance care planning (ACP) and compare these with beliefs held by Caucasian Americans. The objectives are to identify if there are differences in opinions between racial groups and to provide relevant information for health and social service providers. African American and Latino American participants in this study indicated many factors that affect their hesitation to utilize ACP services: spiritual and religious beliefs; family caregiving; and lack of knowledge about ACP services. Implications for practice include providing easy-to-understand information about ACP to clients of …

Andres Bello, El Poema De Mio Cid Y Las Ruinas Originales Del Hispanismo, Alvaro Kaempfer Jan 2015

Andres Bello, El Poema De Mio Cid Y Las Ruinas Originales Del Hispanismo, Alvaro Kaempfer

Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies Faculty Publications

This reading of Andres Bello's edition of the POEMA DE MIO CID, focuses on the corrupted state of a manuscript conceived as a foundational masterpiece in a Hispanic philological tradition. To organize his reading, Bello embraced the task of restoring the text and guide its eventual readers, locating the poem as the beginning of a cultural journey for an extraordinary variety of participants, from different places and times, in the shape and development of a literary text. Bello discussed the presumably authorized affiliation to its language to identify and overcome the interpretative limits of a medieval piece of writing articulating …

Anger Is A Gift: How Psychology And Ethics Illuminate Moral Responsibility - Peter White Scholar Grant, Zac Cogley Jan 2015

Anger Is A Gift: How Psychology And Ethics Illuminate Moral Responsibility - Peter White Scholar Grant, Zac Cogley

Grants

This proposal details a project that builds on my current interdisciplinary research program to articulate and develop a novel theory of moral responsibility. Like many philosophers, I maintain that whether someone is morally responsible for an action depends on whether it is appropriate to adopt attitudes such as anger and resentment toward the person. What makes my view unique is how I understand these “reactive attitudes.” I show they serve three functions: to appraise the action of a person (e.g. that it is wrong), to communicate the appraisal of wrongdoing to others, and to sanction the perceived wrongdoer. My defense …

Angelo Scarlato’s extraordinary and vast collection of art and artifacts related to the Civil War, and specifically to the Battle of Gettysburg, the United States Colored Troops, slavery and the African American struggle for emancipation, citizenship and freedom has proved to be an extraordinary resource for Gettysburg College students. The 2012-14 exhibition in Musselman Library’s Special Collections, curated by Lauren Roedner ’13, entitled Slaves, Soldiers, Citizens: African American Artifacts of the Civil War Era and its corresponding catalogue provided a powerful and comprehensive historical narrative of the period.

This fall, students in my course at Gettysburg College “Art and Public …

Nursing Ethics And The 21st-Century Armed Conflict: The Example Of Ciudad Juárez, Kathleen A. O'Connor Jan 2015

Nursing Ethics And The 21st-Century Armed Conflict: The Example Of Ciudad Juárez, Kathleen A. O'Connor

Departmental Papers (S&A)

The purpose of this article is to call attention to the lack of caregiver safety in conflict settings; to bring awareness to nurses and health care professionals of new challenges, specifically the deliberate targeting of health care professionals, that they may encounter in local armed conflict situations; and to address a gap in knowledge about the social and cultural factors surrounding 21st-century armed conflict that directly affect the provision of health care. I argue that these are of interest to transcultural nursing in that violent actors belong to a dangerous subculture, the understanding of which is important to transcultural nursing …

Review Of Autonomy By Andrew Snodden, William Simkulet

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

Philosophers have various reasons to be interested in individual autonomy. Individual self-rule is widely recognized to be important. But what, exactly, is autonomy? In what ways is it important? And just how important is it? This book introduces contemporary philosophical thought about the nature and significance of individual self-rule.

Frowe's Machine Cases, William Simkulet Jan 2015

Frowe's Machine Cases, William Simkulet

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

Helen Frowe (2006/2010) contends that there is a substantial moral difference between killing and letting die, arguing that in Michael Tooley's infamous machine case it is morally wrong to flip a coin to determine who lives or dies. Here I argue that Frowe fails to show that killing and letting die are morally inequivalent. However, I believe that she has succeeded in showing that it is wrong to press the button in Tooley's case, where pressing the button will change who lives and dies. I argue that because killing and letting die are morally equivalent we have no reason to …

New Critical Perspectives On Franco-Irish Relations, Anne Goarzin Jan 2015

New Critical Perspectives On Franco-Irish Relations, Anne Goarzin

Books

This collection of critical essays proposes new and original readings of the relationship between French and Irish literature and culture. It seeks to re-evaluate, deconstruct and question artistic productions and cultural phenomena while pointing to the potential for comparative analysis between the two countries. The volume covers the French wine tradition, the Irish rebellion and the weight of religious and cultural tradition in both countries, seeking to examine these familiar topics from unconventional perspectives. Some contributors offer readings of established figures in Irish and French literature, from Flann O’Brien to Albert Camus; others highlight writers who have been left outside …

Transpersonal Art—Does It Bite?, Judy Schavrien Jan 2015

Transpersonal Art—Does It Bite?, Judy Schavrien

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article addresses the question of whether or not political perspective and content enrich transpersonal art and studies. The artist’s argument for making the range of the transpersonal inclusive, not just transcendent but also immanent, employs examples from her art as well as descriptions of her process. She sets the discussion in three contexts: that of art criticism, contemporary and traditional; that of art production; and that of the field of transpersonal studies. In regard to the latter, she both defines and examines the role of spiritual bypass, and argues the importance of resisting the temptation to take refuge in …

Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk, Connecticut is a treasure-filled relic of America’s Gilded Age. The mansion was built in the 1860s and is every bit as grand as the more publicized mansions in Newport, R.I. It is also a landmark of Irish America because from the 1860s until the 1930s, Lockwood Mathews Mansion was both the workplace and the home of a large staff of servants, most of them Irish. In 2016, visitors to the museum will be treated to a rare glimpse into the lives of these Irish immigrants in an exhibit titled, “The Stairs Below: The Mansion’s Domestic …
