Gender Roles, Homophobia, And The Closet: Experiences Of Queer Women, Nicole M. Richards
Gender Roles, Homophobia, And The Closet: Experiences Of Queer Women, Nicole M. Richards
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The culture in which a woman is a part of sets expectations based on their gender. This paper explores how the relationship between prescribed gender roles, internalized homophobia, and coming out of the closet are related. A focus group of seven women who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, and queer was conducted. The findings suggest that gender roles do limit the way women view themselves, that religion is the largest contributor to internalized homophobia, and that gender expression changes throughout the coming out process as these queer women developed a stronger sense of their identity. Future research should include …
Refinement And Architecture In Early Ypsilanti, Lynda Mccarron
Refinement And Architecture In Early Ypsilanti, Lynda Mccarron
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this work is to examine refinement and architecture in nineteenth-century America with a focus on rural areas and Ypsilanti, Michigan in particular. The research utilized consists of an analysis of primary and secondary sources. Included among the primary sources are architectural style books such as those by Andrew Jackson Downing, pioneer writings such as those of Caroline Kirkland and Solon Robinson, historical buildings, and probate record inventories of Washtenaw County. Ypsilantians did not assume the genteel refinement that developed in the nineteenth century. They instead modified gentility to become a form of respectability that suited their needs. …
Tourism In Crisis: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Seaworld's Twitter Response To Blackfish, Nicholas E. Marek
Tourism In Crisis: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Seaworld's Twitter Response To Blackfish, Nicholas E. Marek
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Released on July 19, 2013, the documentary Blackfish highlighted the mistreatment of dangerous sea-life and the lack of employee training at the aquatic zoological theme park SeaWorld. Considering the immense reputational damage suffered by SeaWorld, this study uses qualitative content analysis to examine SeaWorld’s Twitter (twitter.com) response to the Blackfish crisis. An inductive method of coding highlights overall themes present in SeaWorld’s tweets while the deductive method of coding utilizes Benoit’s (1997) image repair theory to determine how this tourism organization utilizes Twitter as a medium of image restoration. The results prompt suggestions for clarifying image repair theory as well …
Peter Maxwell Davies's Variations On A Theme: A Catalogue Of The 'Sea' Works, Justin Vickers
Peter Maxwell Davies's Variations On A Theme: A Catalogue Of The 'Sea' Works, Justin Vickers
Faculty Publications - Music
Since 1971, Peter Maxwell Davies (b. 1934) has lived on the Orkney Islands north of Scotland. This adopted homeland and the sea surrounding it have influenced a preponderance of the composer’s output since his arrival. As of 2015, from the former Master of the Queen’s Music’s 330 official opera, one-third owe their inspirational genesis to the sea and the Orcadian archipelago that Davies calls home. The 108 discrete works that are sea-themed fall into six genres: chamber orchestra, choral/vocal, instrumental, opera, orchestral, and compositions for young performers. Through Davies’s personal writings, it is clear that he implicitly and explicitly associates …

The Dutch Republic And Its Status In The American Colonial Context After The Treaty Of Utrecht [La República Holandesa Y Su Posición En El Contexto Colonial Americano Después De 1713], Ana Crespo Solana, Wim Klooster
History
During the War of Spanish Succession, the Dutch Republic fought alongside the Austrians and their allies against the Bourbon party. Still, and in spite of its alliance with England, the treaties of Utrecht did not leave the Dutch Republic in a good position. In this article, these treaties’ consequences for the commercial and colonial Dutch expansion in the Atlantic world are analyzed.
This article is in Spanish.

Greg and Carol Stockmal, who had bought the house in 1979, found Kunitz and his entourage standing in front of their …

American Novelist Catharine Sedgwick Negotiates British Copyright, 1822–57, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
American novelist Catharine Maria Sedgwick had an unusually long career and her books were reprinted in Britain in a variety of circumstances and formats. Both her first novel, A New-England Tale (1822), and her last, Married or Single? (1857), appeared in London editions arranged by her or her American publishers, as did many of her books in between (including travel, children’s and conduct books). However, her works also appeared in unauthorized reprints. Sedgwick thus makes an interesting case study of how law and custom regulated the reprinting of American literary texts in Great Britain after 1820. Focusing on the British …
