‘Fuchsia Lipstick’: The Domestication Of Lee Krasner In Post-War Criticism, Aleisha E. Barton Jan 2015

‘Fuchsia Lipstick’: The Domestication Of Lee Krasner In Post-War Criticism, Aleisha E. Barton

Richard A. Harrison Symposium

After the Second World War, the art world shifted from Europe to New York and a new form of painting that defined itself as distinctly American demanded attention from the public. This style, abstract expressionism, created an inability to survey clear subject matter allowed critics to imply gendered metaphorical resonances within works, as meanings were fluid and inconclusive to the viewer. Coupled with instability in the social sphere, artistic abstraction served as motivation for critics to seek out gendered aspects within an artwork, identifying and constructing difference to preserve order and control in a society that had dramatically changed from …

The “Good,” The “Bad,” And The Queer Invisible: The Los Angeles May Day Queer Contingent, Suyapa G. Portillo Villeda, Eileen J. Ma, Stacy I. Macías, Carmen Varela Jan 2015

The “Good,” The “Bad,” And The Queer Invisible: The Los Angeles May Day Queer Contingent, Suyapa G. Portillo Villeda, Eileen J. Ma, Stacy I. Macías, Carmen Varela

Diálogo

This article explores the evolution of the May Day Queer Contingent (MDQC) as a part of the annual Los Angeles May Day march. The MDQC is a notable example of the political mobilization led by queer women and transgender activists of color of the LGBTQ community, as it relates to the struggle for immigrant rights. Offering reflections from founders and key organizers, this paper considers the development of the MDQC; its engagement with other groups; intersectionality and queer women of color feminisms as a political project to confront a heteropatriarchal immigration reform movement.

Marriage Equality And “It Gets Better”: Neoliberalism And The Absence Of Political Feeling, Kristi Carey Jan 2015

Marriage Equality And “It Gets Better”: Neoliberalism And The Absence Of Political Feeling, Kristi Carey

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

The fight for marriage equality and the “It Gets Better” campaign exist as two activist movements within contemporary gay liberation politics. This paper will understand these iterations of activism as both emanating from and perpetuating our neoliberal and capitalist present. Through striving for the politics of inclusion, both marriage equality and the IGB campaign merely rearrange the societal and rhetorical plane rather than undertake structural change—that which critically questions the very structures that individuals want to be included into. Using Foucault’s (1976) exploration of the repression of sex within marriage, as well as Cvetkovich’s (2012) theories of depression, I ask …

Psychosomatic Disorders In The Queer Community, Tanner Gill Jan 2015

Psychosomatic Disorders In The Queer Community, Tanner Gill

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This paper analyzes and evaluates why psychosomatic disorders are present in such higher rates in the queer community than in other communities. To assess this issue, this report supplies research on the intersection amongst various sexual and gender minorities within the community, three psychosomatic disorders (eating, anxiety, and mood disorders), and the heteronormative and homophobic society in which the aforementioned items are positioned. These disorders are linked to the feeling of societal marginalization in communities where heteronormativity and homophobia are prevalent and predominant, and also the bullying, hate, and stigmatization that coincide with such social institutions. To combat the rapid …

Rational Emotion, Feminine Professionalism, And Cooperative Success: Women Scientists In Star Trek: Voyager As Challenges To The Dominant Ideology, Kiran Mccloskey Jan 2015

Rational Emotion, Feminine Professionalism, And Cooperative Success: Women Scientists In Star Trek: Voyager As Challenges To The Dominant Ideology, Kiran Mccloskey

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This article considers Star Trek: Voyager’s portrayal of women in the sciences through the lens of Eva Flicker’s 2003 review of scientific women throughout film and television from 1927 to 1999. Two core divergences in Star Trek: Voyager are identified: the absence of constraining dualities such as the rational/emotional and professional/feminine divisions, and the lack of isolation experienced by the female scientists. Such a representation would have positive effects on female viewers according to the sociological interpellation process model, which is supported by testimony and correspondences with multiple fans.

Germans, Jews And Turks (Fall 2015), Robert D. Tobin Jan 2015

Germans, Jews And Turks (Fall 2015), Robert D. Tobin

Syllabi

This class studies the expression of cultural identity in central European literature. How have people come to think of themselves or others as “Germans,” “Jews,” “Turks,” or some combinations thereof? While the Holocaust is obviously central to the German-Jewish relationship, it is not the only focus of this course—we will read literary reflections of the emancipation of the Jews, of German-Jewish assimilation and symbiosis, of the rise of anti-Semitism and Zionism, as well as attempts to remember the past. And while the long history of the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in Germany will be a major component of our …

On Derivative Moral Responsibility And The Epistemic Connection Required For Moral Responsibility, William Simkulet Jan 2015

On Derivative Moral Responsibility And The Epistemic Connection Required For Moral Responsibility, William Simkulet

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

Derivative moral responsibility is not moral responsibility at all. Much of the confusion found in the literature concerning moral responsibility and the free will problem can be traced back to a penchant to reconcile our philosophical theories of moral responsibility with our folk commonsense linguistic accounts of moral responsibility, a tradition that is notable for its utter lack of making two important distinctions - (1) the distinction between derivative moral responsibility and non-derivative moral responsibility (what Galen Strawson calls “true moral responsibility”) and (2) the distinction between the scope and degree of one’s moral responsibility.1 The failure to make such …

Basement, Robert Mclane Daniels Jan 2015

Basement, Robert Mclane Daniels

ETD Archive

Basement is a play in two acts. I began writing this play at a time that I was contemplating a great deal on the idea of individual, human nature, and the consequences of routine, generational suppression of said nature. At the time that this play was written, stories surrounding human subjugation, rape, torture, and murder were very prominent in the news and while the events of Basement have in no way been taken from any of these actual stories, the major themes of Basement were very heavily influenced by these stories of human bondage. As a writer, I consider my …

A Small Discovery: Avicenna's Theory Of Minima Naturalia, Jon Mcginnis Jan 2015

A Small Discovery: Avicenna's Theory Of Minima Naturalia, Jon Mcginnis

Philosophy Faculty Works

There has been a long-held misconception among historians of philosophy and science that apart from brief comments in Aristotle and Averroes, the theory of minima naturalia had to await Latin Schoolmen for its full articulation. Recently scholars have shown that far from sporadic comments on minima naturalia, Averroes in fact had a fully developed and well-integrated theory of them. In this study, I complement these scholars’ important work by considering Avicenna’s place in the history and development of the doctrine of the minima naturalia. There is no study to date that mentions Avicenna in connection with this doctrine despite the …
