The Political Pilgrim: William Lithgow Of Lanark On God And Country, Philip Anthony Davis Mar 2015

The Political Pilgrim: William Lithgow Of Lanark On God And Country, Philip Anthony Davis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Travel literature has been understood to comment on the expectations and impressions of the traveler as they encountered foreign spaces, customs, and people. There has been an unspoken understanding, at best, that travelers who wrote their tales used these foreign spaces to engage in debates that were meaningful to their domestic audience. However, the author has been central to much of the analysis, disconnecting travel literature from other linguistic exercises that more directly offered observations that were directly rooted in domestic culture. Author-centered analysis isolates the traveler from the wider world in which they engaged. It also ignores the other …

Km Symposium: Designing Work, Knowledge Cafe Presentation, John Walsh

Conference Papers

This visual presentation looks at the history of office spatial design, particularly in relation to the evolution of the Open Plan office. Starting with the invention of the steel beam which facilitated the creation of large open-plan floorplates in the later part of the 19th Century, the presentation looks at examples of open plan offices up to the present day. In particular this presentation looks at “the cubicle” and the impact of office spatial and furniture design on different work-modes including collaboration and concentration.

“Amidst The Chime Of The Razor Wire”: Narrating Poetic Justice In Guantanamo Bay, Kristina H. Reardon Mar 2015

“Amidst The Chime Of The Razor Wire”: Narrating Poetic Justice In Guantanamo Bay, Kristina H. Reardon

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

The quest of poetic justice carries Marc Falkoff’s 2007 anthology Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak into the court of public (literary) opinion. While the Pentagon asserts that poetry poses special security risks, and related translation issues may obscure the artistry or message of some of the 17 poets’ verse, Falkoff’s volume nevertheless gives prisoners’ voices a forum in which they might be heard. At the nexus of legal and literary scholarship, poetic voice and its expression become a site of deconstructing identity. The Guantanamo poets invite readers to explore the ways that aesthetics form perceptions of their identity as …

Jane Austen's Heroines--And Some Others, Neda H. Jeny Mar 2015

Jane Austen's Heroines--And Some Others, Neda H. Jeny

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Jane Austen’s Heroines--and Some Others

Jane Austen is the earliest English novelist whose novels are still widely read today; in fact, they are becoming more popular all the time.

Of course, there are good reasons for this popularity. Apart from Austen’s creation of unforgettable characters, and her exquisite irony and sense of humor, there is one other thing I’d like to discuss today: her heroines could be called, in a sense, brilliant (and often unorthodox) adaptations of universally recognized types. For example, Elizabeth Bennet is so remarkable a character because she is, at the same time, a sort of Cinderella …

La Metaphore Du Devoilement Dans Les Enfants Du Nouveau Monde D’Assia Djebar, Amina Saidou Mar 2015

La Metaphore Du Devoilement Dans Les Enfants Du Nouveau Monde D’Assia Djebar, Amina Saidou

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Crossing Borders: From Indifference To Empathy, Stimulating A Humanist Perspective On The Issue Of Illegal Immigration Through Film, Pedro J. Lopes

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Smuggled is the latest of a vast repertoire of films focusing on the issue of the illegal border crossing between Mexico and the United States.

Directed by Ramon Hamilton and released in 2012, Smuggled tells the story of Miguel, a 9-year-old boy, and his mother as they attempt to illegally cross the border into the United States hidden in a compartment underneath a tour bus.

That same year, the well-known Mexican actor Gael García Bernal produces a documentary titled Who is Dayani Cristal?, in which he himself retraces the steps and circumstances that led to the disappearing of this …

Swim, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

Performance pioneer Robert Whitman is always at the vanguard of theater and art. With Swim, he creates an enchanting, thrillingly inventive new work that expands and heightens the theater experience by creating a rich environment of sound, movement, smells, and activities, in which the visual is only one part of the experience. According to Whitman, “an image, an object, a performer, or an action may not be seen, but it can be heard; it can be smelled; it can be perceived and felt; and in this shared experience the audience, sighted and blind, can be brought into a single community.”

Vicente Pagasartundua's Último De Los Mohicanos: A Racialized Dialogue, Thomas Genova Mar 2015

Vicente Pagasartundua's Último De Los Mohicanos: A Racialized Dialogue, Thomas Genova

Spanish Publications

This article uses the translation history of North American James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 Last of the Mohicans to explore the place of race in nineteenth-century republican discourse as it circulated in the Atlantic World. Based not on Cooper's original, but on Auguste Defauconpret's 1826 French translation, le Dernier des mohicans, Vicente Pagasartundua's 1832 Último de los mohicanos, like many republican-oriented works in the early nineteenth century, was translated in Spain for a Spanish American audience. Traveling from pre-Jacksonian New York to Orleanist Paris to absolutist Madrid, Cooper's novel and its translations participate in a transnational conversation on the …

Digital Takeover Of News: Journalism As A Public Service In The Social Media Age, Jenny Hauser Mar 2015

Digital Takeover Of News: Journalism As A Public Service In The Social Media Age, Jenny Hauser

Conference Papers

Research into the use of social media by news organisations to source information and user-generated content has shown substantial changes in the news production process. It is argued that these changes are resulting in increased access to established mainstream media for ordinary citizens, mainly through citizen-journalism.

To date, the news industry has been fixated on how free information and visual content shared on social media platforms can be sourced and verified in such a way that standards of accuracy are maintained. While news organisations focus on reaping the benefits of citizen-journalism on social networks, a growing trend of de-professionalisation in …

A Phenomenological Study On Principal Leadership In Islamic K-12 Schools, Allen Farina Mar 2015

A Phenomenological Study On Principal Leadership In Islamic K-12 Schools, Allen Farina

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The Muslim population in America is increasing and to meet the demand for quality religious and academic instruction for Muslim youth, Islamic K-12 schools are being established throughout the U.S. As these institutions multiply, it becomes necessary to study school board influence and leadership by principals, although literary sources appear to be sparse. This phenomenological study can be a starting point for scholarly research on this topic, as follows:

  1. How do Islamic school principals describe their leadership role as administrators of Muslim K-12 schools?
  2. What impact does the school board have on the leadership role of principals in Islamic K-12 …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

"My people, my people, listen. The battle is in our hands. The battle is in our hands in Mississippi and Alabama and all over the United States.... And so as we go away this afternoon, let us go away more than ever before committed to this struggle and committed to nonviolence. I must admit to you that there are still some difficult days ahead. We are still in for a season of suffering...." [excerpt]

Cross-Cultural Spaces In An Anonymously Painted Portrait Of The Ottoman Sultan Mahmud Ii, Alison Paige Terndrup Mar 2015

Cross-Cultural Spaces In An Anonymously Painted Portrait Of The Ottoman Sultan Mahmud Ii, Alison Paige Terndrup

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes an anonymous portrait painting of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808-1839), called by its descriptive title Seated Portrait of Mahmud II, within the context of the extensive portrait campaign commissioned by the sultan. Surviving examples from this series of diplomatic portraits share a unique set of intercultural iconographic vocabularies as a reflection of their time as well as implicit reinforcement of the sultan's political goals. By focusing on Seated Portrait of Mahmud II, I argue that a closer inspection of the campaign within a context that pays attention to Ottoman, European, and Persian visual practices reveals …

Although I did not realize it when I married him, I really married Teddy plus a farm. Young and rather naive, I believed I could soon make myself over into a farmer's wife, especially since the farm in question was a project only for week-ends. But I have found it consumes all of my husband's spare time and as much of mine as I will allow.

Her house-dress is faultlessly tailored. She wears sheer hose and high heels. Her sleek, upswept hair-do is in shining order at 6:00 a.m. Her house, which was a tumbled-down shack bought for almost nothing, has been remodeled with only a few dollars and quantities of ingenuity into a decorator's dream; most of the furniture, deep, handrubbed mahogany, was found in a back street second-hand shop for a few pennies and refinished. Her house is in ship-shape order (Navy style) not later than 8:00 a.m. She does a weekly laundry for seven. people before breakfast without marring her manicure. She prepares …
