They Shall Recover: Towards A Pneumatological And Eschatological Understanding Of The Atonement In Pentecostal Healing, Daniel J. Simmons Apr 2015

They Shall Recover: Towards A Pneumatological And Eschatological Understanding Of The Atonement In Pentecostal Healing, Daniel J. Simmons

Selected Honors Theses

This thesis identifies the ideologies of the Christian church surrounding divine healing with an emphasis upon the Pentecostal outbreak of the Azusa Street Revival. This study explores the “Atonement model” of divine healing, and assesses its strength in adequately capturing Pentecostal thought regarding divine healing. From this understanding, the study examines pneumatology and eschatology within the purview of divine healing in order to criticize the validity of the Atonement model.

Review Of Ingo Schaaf, Magie Und Ritual Bei Apollonios Rhodios, Paul Ojennus

Library Faculty Scholarship

Review of Ingo Schaaf, Magie und Ritual bei Apollonios Rhodios: Studien zu ihrer Form und Funktion in den Argonautika. Religionsgeschichtliche Versuche und Vorarbeiten, Bd. 63. Berlin, Boston: De Gruyter, 2014. Pp. viii, 402. ISBN 9783110309485. €119.95. Ingo Schaaf offers an extensive and detailed examination of the treatment of magic and ritual in the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes. This study fills an important gap in contemporary research on Apollonius, and it promises to place the scholarship on magic in the Argonautica on the same level that geography now enjoys.

Students from Dr. Judith Ezekiel's Spring 2015 Women's Studies courses, "Feminist Activism" and "Women, Gender, and Black Freedom Movements," collaborated to create a booklet that presents the lives of a dozen black women who were killed by the police or who died while in police custody, in order to argue for the inclusion of black women in the "Black Lives Matter" movement, not merely as originators and supporters of the cause but as a group that is protected and remembered within the movement in the same capacity as black men.

Everything Is Not What It Seems Allegory Analysis, Jamie Bautista Apr 2015

Everything Is Not What It Seems Allegory Analysis, Jamie Bautista

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

Have you ever woken up from a nightmare, only to find the heart-pounding terror stayed with you long after the dream was over? This was the case in Young Goodman Brown, where a kind-hearted man is exposed to the evil in people. Allegory is a reference to a certain scenario or theme with a hidden meaning.Throughout this story, a great deal of allegory is used to expose the flaws in mankind.

Two Minds - Two Stories, Matthew Vazquez Apr 2015

Two Minds - Two Stories, Matthew Vazquez

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

This is a project about two separate writers from two different eras that have one main thing in common, the conflict. The two short stories show how each writer uses their literary elements to portray a stunning masterpiece. This gets the reader thinking about what type of connection can be made and the relations between them.

In Harm's Way: Wisconsin Workers And Disability From The Gilded Age To The Great Depression, Karalee Donna Surface

Dissertations (1934 -)

During the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, the American workplace proved especially dangerous to its workers’ lives and limbs. The introduction of mass-production, coupled with a lack of safeguards on mechanized equipment and a dearth of workplace safety or sanitation regulations, ensured that an ever-growing number of workers were maimed or killed. Wisconsin legislators initially sought to remedy the issue of workplace violence by issuing a series of safety laws in the late 1870s and early 1880s. This, however, failed to stem the number of accident victims. Furthermore, the common law liability system through which injured workers could seek restitution from …

Booker T. Washington And W.E.B. Du Bois: Guiding Students To Historical Context, Adam Kotlarczyk Apr 2015

Booker T. Washington And W.E.B. Du Bois: Guiding Students To Historical Context, Adam Kotlarczyk

Other Voices

Seldom have two vastly different visions been expressed as clearly and as elegantly as in Booker T. Washington’s Atlanta Exposition Address (1895) and W.E.B. Du Bois’s “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others” (from The Souls of Black Folk, 1903). Awash in memorable rhetoric, these competing philosophies foresaw very different paths for America, and for black social progress, at the dawn of the twentieth century.

This lesson introduces students to the ideas and informational texts of Washington and DuBois while challenging students to research some of the historical context in which these men lived, worked, and thought.

Teaching Tolkien: Language, Scholarship, And Creativity, Adam Kotlarczyk

Faculty Publications & Research

Why Tolkien?

Let us start with the obvious—if cynical—question, almost certain to come from a skeptical administrator or colleague: why would any serious, self-respecting English teacher want to teach an author whose work is about dragons, fairies, and the fantastic? With all the increased attention to standardized testing and with the demand for rigor in read- ings in the average English curriculum, choosing a popular text might raise eyebrows among critics. The question that an English teacher may be asked (or indeed, may ask him- or herself) is: doesn't teaching Tolkien as "serious" literature just fan those flames?

Side By Side: An Exploration Of The Artistic Process And The Painted Surface, Jessie F. Sorvaag Apr 2015

Side By Side: An Exploration Of The Artistic Process And The Painted Surface, Jessie F. Sorvaag

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

By investigating the juxtaposition of the spiritual sacrifice between life and death, as well as discovering the capabilities of paint as a medium, I hoped to create a body of work that encourages thought and discovery of tension and conflict, both within the work and within the viewer. This project helped create an environment of thoughtful creation, research, and investigation that will continue to influence me beyond the completion of this semester. This work is as much about the viewer and their reaction, as it is about my own internal investigation into juxtaposition, conflict, and tension. Not only is the …

Factors Influencing The Likelihood Of Using Religion As A Coping Mechanism In Response To Life Event Stressors, Nicole R. Cornell Apr 2015

Factors Influencing The Likelihood Of Using Religion As A Coping Mechanism In Response To Life Event Stressors, Nicole R. Cornell

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Stress is an aspect of daily life. Stressors can be mentally taxing to an individual and cause negative effects when it comes to health. To combat stress, most individuals implement one or more personal coping mechanisms. However, though individuals may encounter similar stressors in life, each person combats the accompanied stress in vastly different ways. In some cases, individuals turn to religion to make sense of their circumstances and buffer their stress (Nash 2006; Jacobson, et al. 2006). Most previous research has looked at whether religion functions as an effective coping mechanism while not necessarily addressing why certain people use …

Line Language, Albert Avi Arenfeld

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I consider utility and beauty in the functional pots that I make. In making pottery I continue a history of typography as ornament and a tradition of making objects by hand. My designs are informed by my personal background as well as cultural and historic influences.

The pots that I make are inspired by anthropomorphic form and architectural structure. I reference the geometry of the human body as well as buildings seen in my travels to Japan and the Middle East. The internal structure of the pot is both bones and framing, the surface of the pot is both skin …

A Flight For Hope, Emma Levich Apr 2015

A Flight For Hope, Emma Levich

Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies

The purpose of this piece was to specifically commemorate the children that were victims of the Holocaust. The butterfly is the international symbol for hope, renewal of life, innocence, and beauty, and so I wanted to create something that captured the spirit and souls of all the children that never had a chance to spread their own beautiful wings and fly away from their terrible fate. The horrible crimes and the overall darkest period in history the children had to suffer through is represented by the big dark butterfly in the corner, dressed with gruesome images of what they were …

A Morally Consistent Character Or Absolute Free Will: Which Should We Choose?, Sarah Woods Apr 2015

A Morally Consistent Character Or Absolute Free Will: Which Should We Choose?, Sarah Woods

Featured Research

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” This Aristotelian notion of how to lead a virtuous life is one that philosophers and scholars alike have respected and praised for centuries. Consistency in choosing the right path is the key to leading a fulfilling life, which is a notion many agree upon. While one person may hold Aristotelian notions of consistent excellence in character on a pedestal, this same person may also believe that in order for one to have free will and moral responsibility, one must have the ability at all times …

A Necessity Of Morals, Austin Mcelrath Apr 2015

A Necessity Of Morals, Austin Mcelrath

Featured Research

John Martin Fischer has stated that his initial motivation for his work The Metaphysics of Free Will was “to defend moral culpability from the threats of causal determinism and divine omniscience” while also asserting semi-compatibilism. Taking that a step further, the goal for my own work is to defend our need for moral culpability from a metaphysical standpoint. In this essay I will argue that ultimately there are only two possibilities when it comes to a moral-metaphysical framework, only one of which involves human culpability: either human existence has intrinsic meaning and worth, therefore giving weight to our moral decision …

Just Desert, Onur Sahin Apr 2015

Just Desert, Onur Sahin

Featured Research

In this paper I examine the relevance of moral desert with regards to compatibilist accounts of moral responsibility. I look at two types of moral desert: (1) desert with relation to an agent and a moral community and (2) desert with relation to the moral worth of an agent or action. I begin by discussing Pereboom’s four cases and the problem that might arise for compatibilists given which view of moral desert they affirm. From there I explicate these two opposing conceptions of desert relevant to moral responsibility. I look at one example of the latter kind of desert: desert-as-merit. …

A Framework Of Responsibility And Absolution, Tobin Wilson Apr 2015

A Framework Of Responsibility And Absolution, Tobin Wilson

Featured Research

Suppose we have a choice between A and B, and that both options are morally reprehensible. If we were forced or tricked into making a decision, would we still be responsible? The answer is usually quite easy to find, but the question of why we are responsible seems much harder to discern. In any discussion about moral responsibility, is seems there needs to be a system of necessary and sufficient conditions. However such requirements tend to exist in a hazy philosophical space, so it is not surprising that we often confuse them. Thus, my paper will attempt to create …
