Interview With Reverend Dr. Michael Pfleger, Jesse Betend

Chicago 1968

Length: 76 minutes

Interview with Reverend Michael Pfleger by Jesse Betend.

In his interview with Jesse Betend, Reverend Michael Pfleger discusses his life leading up to his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement in 1968. He recalls how his childhood and early experiences affected his later work, his religious yet very progressively outspoken family and attending a highly diverse high school (Quigley Preparatory Seminary South). He recalls his first exposures to racism and segregation through family friends, classmates, and work with Native American and Black communities. He describes the violence perpetrated by his own community during a speech by Dr. …

Maybe, Maybe Not: The Tao Of History, Kevin P. Lavery Apr 2015

Maybe, Maybe Not: The Tao Of History, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Many years ago, I read an old Chinese parable in one of my brother’s books. I haven’t been able to determine its precise origins, but it goes something like this:

One day, a farmer’s only horse broke loose and ran away from his stable. “What bad luck,” the farmer’s neighbors said to him. But the farmer merely replied, “Maybe, maybe not.”... [excerpt]

Fighting A Resurgent Hyper-Positivism In Education Is Music To My Ears, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams Apr 2015

Fighting A Resurgent Hyper-Positivism In Education Is Music To My Ears, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams

Africana Studies Faculty Publications

In this article, I argue that one of the gifts of the Age of Enlightenment, the ability to measure, to experiment, to predict—turned rancid by hyper-positivism—is re-asserting itself globally in the field of education (including music education). I see a neoliberal, neocolonial connection—in terms of the ideologies that fuel them—between some of the homogenizing, epistemologically/culturally imperialist aspects of globalization and this resurgent hyper-positivism that has been accompanied by a corporatization of education. I posit that critical education, including critical music education, is an essential component of a necessary—if rancorous—dialogue in maintaining a definition of education that is as varied and …

Muslim Women And United States Healthcare: Challenges To Access And Navigation, Dayna M. Seeger Apr 2015

Muslim Women And United States Healthcare: Challenges To Access And Navigation, Dayna M. Seeger

What All Americans Should Know About Women in the Muslim World

This paper offers an analysis of the interactions of Muslim women in the US healthcare system in order to unpack challenges and propose potential accommodations. Islam may inform values or considerations in the context of other cultural factors or present Muslim women with specific challenges in seeking healthcare based on Islamic teachings or social constructs. This paper examines these factors by elaborating on an overview of Muslim interpretations of healthcare using religious authorities, text from the Qur’an, and social norms. It then delves into challenges faced by Muslim women in the US healthcare system and the implications of those challenges …

Breastfeeding Initiation And Continuation By Employment Status Among Korean Women, Yeon Bai, Nam Mi Kang, Jung Eun Lee, Theo Van Achterberg, Taisun Hyun

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

The objective of this study was to examine the factors associated with the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding among Korean women in relation to their employment status. Data were collected using a web-based self-administered questionnaire from 1,031 Korean mothers living in Seoul with babies younger than 24 months. Demographic characteristics, education on breastfeeding, rooming in, breastfeeding during a hospital stay, and breastfeeding knowledge were examined. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with initiation and continuation at 1, 6 and 12 months according to mothers' employment status. Breastfeeding initiation rates were similar regardless of mothers' employment status. …

Another Adelaida: Dostoevsky’S The Idiot In Nabokov’S Ada, Victor Fet, Slav N. Gratchev

Modern Languages Faculty Research

It appears…that Ada scholars have overlooked the only Adelaida existing in major Russian literature. It is Adelaida Yepanchina, the middle daughter of General Yepanchin in Dostoevsky's The Idiot (1868). All three daughters have names starting with "A": Alexandra, Adelaida, Aglaya (compare this to Nabokov's Anya-Ada-Asya).

Arthur Conan Doyle's "Great New Adventure Story": Journalism In The Lost World, Amy Wong Apr 2015

Arthur Conan Doyle's "Great New Adventure Story": Journalism In The Lost World, Amy Wong

Collected Faculty Scholarship

This essay discusses the critical engagements of Arthur Doyle’s The Lost World (1912) with the rise of journalistic professionalism at the turn of the century. With a focus on features from the novel’s serial publication in George Newnes’s illustrated periodical, the Strand Magazine, this essay argues that this popular work of fiction self-consciously positions itself against what had become a fairly mainstream ideological and generic split between literature and journalism. Through its masquerade as a first-person account mediated by a professional network of journalists and editors, The Lost World integrates conventions of literary romance and objective journalism to combat …

Nothing's Wrong, Christina Mesiti Apr 2015

Nothing's Wrong, Christina Mesiti

CGU MFA Theses

I adjust the edges of materials both physically and intellectually. I work with flexible containers. Physically, I push two or more materials together so that they can find their own form, their own edge. I pour the plaster into different kinds of flexible emptinesses like envelopes or discarded gift wrap so that the two materials can exercise their own material agency and vitality, the materials working with themselves and the space to decide their own inevitable shapes. I allow the pieces their own logic.

I want to level the space, the objects, and the viewer so that none of the …

Our Lady Of The Redwoods Rectory, Susie Van Kirk Apr 2015

Our Lady Of The Redwoods Rectory, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

The parish of Our Lady of the Redwoods Catholic Church, 515 Maple Lane, Garberville, California (APN 032-135-017) is developing plans to build a new rectory adjacent to the church edifice. The proposal is to demolish the existing house, replacing it with one of similar architecture, but somewhat smaller. Because the rectory is well over fifty years of age, a Historic Resources Report was prepared to document its history and architecture in order to make a determination of historic significance per Section 15064.5 of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
