Take On Appomattox, Brianna E. Kirk Apr 2015

Take On Appomattox, Brianna E. Kirk

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

On April 9, 1865, Palm Sunday, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant met in the front parlor of Wilmer McLean’s house in the little village of Appomattox Court House to discuss the status of their two armies. After swapping stories of the days of their Mexican War service, the two men finally penned their names on terms of surrender, effectively ending the American Civil War. Grant, magnanimous towards the now defeated Confederates, and Lee, humble in his loss, ushered in the era of reconciliation that would bandage up the past four bloody years and push the reunited country forward …

Next Page

In this issue of Next Page, Professor of Philosophy Daniel DeNicola reveals his appreciation for mysteries, especially those focused on manuscripts or works of art, and how his incessant childhood habit of reading the backs of cereal boxes at breakfast led his parents to buy him a set of "Children's Classics" and his very own encyclopedia-sold in installments at the supermarket.

Into The Woods, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Apr 2015

Into The Woods, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2014-2015 Season

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Griimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood,", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others. The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning of The Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel), their interaction with a witch who has …

In The World But Not Of It: Responses Of Lds Leaders To The Vietnam War, Luke Miller Apr 2015

In The World But Not Of It: Responses Of Lds Leaders To The Vietnam War, Luke Miller

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

This poster presents a summary of original research based on public addresses given by LDS leaders during the Vietnam War era. It identifies and describes four different ideological perspectives on the Vietnam War that high-ranking LDS leaders publicly advocated during these years. Given the enormous amount of influence that LDS leaders in the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve have over Mormons, an analysis of their views is critical to understanding the beliefs and opinions of LDS members. Understanding the main points of agreement and disagreement among LDS leaders serves as a starting point to elucidate the evolution …

Moral Clumsiness, Alejandro Arango Apr 2015

Moral Clumsiness, Alejandro Arango

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

What would happen if one morning you wake up clumsy, as if your sense of touch were unreliable, arbitrarily on and off? And what would this clumsiness look like if we could transfer it to the moral sense? The article expounds an interesting analogy between the sense of touch, loosely construed, and the moral sense: just as a sort of consistency is necessary for the sense of touch to do its job, so it is for the moral sense to play its part. Touch enables us to navigate the everyday world of coffee pots and staircases; our moral sensibility comes …

Jesuits And Their Books: Libraries And Printing Around The World, Kathleen M. Comerford Apr 2015

Jesuits And Their Books: Libraries And Printing Around The World, Kathleen M. Comerford

History: Faculty Publications

The geographical and chronological spread of topics in this thematic issue of the Journal of Jesuit Studies is the result of a mandate to give coverage to both pre- and post-suppression research, around the globe, on Jesuit libraries and printing, in a total of six or seven articles. As this is no small task, a great deal of information is missing from the volume. I began with the premise that the subjects and regions which have received the most coverage over the previous two decades should be excluded: therefore, there is no article on Argentina, China, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, …

The Effects Of Blog-Supported Collaborative Writing On Writing Performance, Writing Anxiety And Perceptions Of Efl College Students In Taiwan, Hui-Ju Wu Apr 2015

The Effects Of Blog-Supported Collaborative Writing On Writing Performance, Writing Anxiety And Perceptions Of Efl College Students In Taiwan, Hui-Ju Wu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Compared with first language (L1) writing, writing in a second or foreign language (L2) is considered to be more challenging and difficult. The challenges and difficulties may result from both the cognitive and the affective aspects of writing. To mitigate the difficulties of L2 writing and help students master L2 writing, teachers could consider using the pedagogical strategies which can help enhance students' cognition in writing or students' writing performance, and also can help reduce students' fear of L2 writing. One of the pedagogical strategies is online collaborative writing supported by CMC. Collaborative learning helps enhance students' cognitive outcomes, such …
