Negotiating A Professional Identity As An International Tutor At The Writing Center, Heejung Kwon Apr 2015

Negotiating A Professional Identity As An International Tutor At The Writing Center, Heejung Kwon

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Graduate Student Presentations

The ethos of international teaching assistants or non-native speaker professionals in the field of writing studies has been researched with a specific focus on teacher identity in classroom settings. The status of international tutors can become a topic of discussion in terms of their credibility, language proficiency, writing competence, and self-efficacy. In this presentation, I discuss how I situate myself as an international tutor at a writing center and ways to self-train and professionalize myself as a better tutor, as well as explore ways to think about mentoring relationships for prospective international tutors.

To Correct Or Not To Correct: The Ethics Of Addressing Grammar In Writing Center Tutorials, Vicki R. Kennell Apr 2015

To Correct Or Not To Correct: The Ethics Of Addressing Grammar In Writing Center Tutorials, Vicki R. Kennell

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations

Although students often ask for grammar help, writing center tutors are conflicted over whether and how much to provide such help because of how they internalize the tutoring mandates found in training manuals, tutoring literature, and writing center policies. This results in disconnects between what happens in tutorials and what tutors and writers think happens, with grammar being prioritized regardless of stated agendas or document needs. Solutions to this problem include educating writers and instructors, as well as educating tutors to address grammar productively when and if it is warranted.

Co-Editor-In-Chief Of The Laureate, Dj Delong

Honors Theses

The Laureate’s mission is to provide undergraduate students at Western Michigan University a place in which to publish their fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and other creative works. Our responsibilities included choosing assistant editors, calling for and reading submissions, choosing pieces to create a manuscript, and editing multiple times for publishing.

This edition is different because of the introduction of co-editors, accepting color artwork, and adding audio files of authors reading their pieces. The Laureate explored the technology that …

Order Of Acquisition: A Comparison Of L1 And L2 English And Spanish Morpheme Acquisition, Kyle A. Mcferren

Senior Honors Theses

This paper examines the order of acquisition for grammatical morphemes in Spanish and English first and second language learners. Brown’s first morpheme order study, conducted in 1973, laid the foundation for what would become one of the most common types of study conducted within the field of second language acquisition. The four orders of acquisition relevant here are examined and compared in order to support the roles of salience, morphophonological regularity, complexity, input frequency, and native language transfer in first and/or second language acquisition. The conclusion is that these five determinants work interdependently in determining the difficulty of acquiring a …

The Little Magazine In Contemporary America, Joanne Joanne Diaz, Eds., Ian Morris, Eds. Apr 2015

The Little Magazine In Contemporary America, Joanne Joanne Diaz, Eds., Ian Morris, Eds.

IWU Authors Bookshelf

Little magazines have often showcased the best new writing in America. Historically, these idiosyncratic, small-circulation outlets have served the dual functions of representing the avant-garde of literary expression while also helping many emerging writers become established authors. Although changing technology and the increasingly harsh financial realities of publishing over the past three decades would seem to have pushed little magazines to the brink of extinction, their story is far more complicated. In this collection, Ian Morris and Joanne Diaz gather the reflections of twenty-three prominent editors whose little magazines have flourished over the past thirty-five years. Highlighting the creativity and …
