Pronunciation Gains On Berlin Study Abroad: Does Starting Proficiency Play A Role?, Emily Hall, Dr. Laura Smith Apr 2014

Pronunciation Gains On Berlin Study Abroad: Does Starting Proficiency Play A Role?, Emily Hall, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Study abroad programs have long enjoyed the prestige of being considered an exceptionally effective way to become fluent in a second language (Freed 1998). This conclusion has been supported by a multitude of studies. Smith, Aten, and Baker (2009) showed that German students on an 11-week study abroad in Berlin and on a similar study abroad in Vienna improved their accentedness, fluency, and comprehensibility in the course of the program. Moreover, Freed (1998) notes that many large-scale studies tend to find overall improvement in the listening and speaking skills of students participating in a study abroad. However, not all studies …

The Imperial Temple At Antiochia Ad Cragum: Aspects Of Architecture And Iconography, Geraldine S. Dobos Apr 2014

The Imperial Temple At Antiochia Ad Cragum: Aspects Of Architecture And Iconography, Geraldine S. Dobos

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Along the northeastern Mediterranean shore lies Antiochia ad Cragum, an ancient city located in the western area of the Roman province of Rough Cilicia. It is now known as the village of Guney, in southern Turkey. The Northeast Temple is the first Imperial structure at Antiochia that has been revealed in its entirety and its reconstruction is anticipated. This excavation by the University of Nebraska (Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project, or ACARP), is directed by UNL Professor Michael Hoff.

The hypothetical reconstruction of the Northeast Temple’s geison course, which I present, emphasizes certain diagnostic features that may be used …

Technologies And Artworks: An Interdisciplinary Exploration Through Ihde And Latour, Kathryn Lynch Thibault Apr 2014

Technologies And Artworks: An Interdisciplinary Exploration Through Ihde And Latour, Kathryn Lynch Thibault

Theses and Dissertations

Technologies and Artworks: An Interdisciplinary Exploration through Ihde and Latour discusses and applies the phenomenological framework described by the philosopher of science and technology Don Ihde, in his text Technology and the Lifeworld, in relation to recent artworks of sculpture and performance that incorporate technologies. The study considers closely Ihde’s embodiment, hermeneutic, and alterity variants for the purpose of developing conceptual tools to investigate the complicated human-technology relationships present in the works considered. A subsequent discussion of psychasthenia and its relationship to Ihde’s embodiment variant demonstrates the limitations of Ihde’s approach and the need for additional sources in order to …

Interregional Interaction And Dilmun Power In The Bronze Age: A Characterization Study Of Ceramics From Bronze Age Sites In Kuwait, Hasan Ashkanani Apr 2014

Interregional Interaction And Dilmun Power In The Bronze Age: A Characterization Study Of Ceramics From Bronze Age Sites In Kuwait, Hasan Ashkanani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Dilmun civilization appeared in the Mesopotamian sources as a land of Eden and a supplier of ivory, copper, pearls and dates whose boats reached Ur ports. After the collapse of the Akkadian power in the second half of the third millennium BC, Dilmun underwent some notable changes in different aspects of life. The presence of planned residential settlements with notable architectural features and numerous burial complexes and `Royal Mounds' in Bahrain marked great economic growth and socio-political development in the early second millennium BC, suggesting the emergence of a stratified social hierarchy.

Furthermore, these changes suggest that a centralized …

Proper Names As Narrative Gaps: A Deconstructive Reading Of Rosario Ferré And García Márquez, Dora Suarez Apr 2014

Proper Names As Narrative Gaps: A Deconstructive Reading Of Rosario Ferré And García Márquez, Dora Suarez

Honors College Theses

This thesis argues that language in general, and proper names in particular, are surreptitious examples of narrative gaps. In this way, in the context of literature, the narrative gaps enclosed in proper names enable the audience to become an active participant in a type of writing that exceeds the limit of the specific literary text at hand. In deconstructing the way in which proper names and nicknames are used by Rosario Ferré and García Márquez, this exposition shows how names, as conveyors of different identities, systematically enable an exercise of différance: they distinguish subjects while postponing an actual description of …

Gender Differentiation And Gender Hierarchy In C. S. Lewis, Alicia D. Burrus Apr 2014

Gender Differentiation And Gender Hierarchy In C. S. Lewis, Alicia D. Burrus

Honors College Theses

This thesis explores the evidence of sexism in the literary works of C. S. Lewis. Lewis’s relationships with women in his personal life were often estranged, and his works frequently display a predominant view of women as inferior. Each of Lewis’s major fictional works shows evidence of sexism, though such evidence lessens in frequency and prominence with each subsequent work. Lewis’s opinion and portrayal of women did change with his marriage to Joy Davidman Gresham, though his fiction never achieved a complete lack of prejudice against women.

Georgia Women And Their Struggle For The Vote, Brittany M. Partridge Apr 2014

Georgia Women And Their Struggle For The Vote, Brittany M. Partridge

Honors College Theses

Women in the United States gained the right through the 19th Amendment in 1920. Even though women constitutionally had this right, Georgia and Mississippi did not allow women to cast a ballot in the 1920 election. By looking into the most prominent religion in these states, the Southern Baptist church, I explore connections between the beliefs and culture of the South, specifically Georgia, and how these played an important role in the obstacles women faced.

Beatriz’ Tod Als Eine Art Weiter Zu Leben: ‚Überschreiben‘ In Irmtraud Morgeners Leben Und Abenteuer Der Trobadora Beatriz Nach Ihrer Spielfrau Laura, Helen Titchener Apr 2014

Beatriz’ Tod Als Eine Art Weiter Zu Leben: ‚Überschreiben‘ In Irmtraud Morgeners Leben Und Abenteuer Der Trobadora Beatriz Nach Ihrer Spielfrau Laura, Helen Titchener
