Women’S Writing: An Annotated Reader, Alexander Smith, Dr. Michelle James Apr 2014

Women’S Writing: An Annotated Reader, Alexander Smith, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Before beginning this project I was aware of the vast variety of literature available in both English and German language. Having been fortunate enough to work with Dr. James already on the Sophie Project, an undertaking of the Department of Germanic and Slavic here at BYU, I was also aware of the number of German-language literature pieces that Dr. James has collected over the past years. However, I was not aware of the impact that this literature can have and the insights that it can provide.

A Matter Of Perspective British Education On The American Revolution, Devon Zimmerman, Dr. Eric Dursteler Apr 2014

A Matter Of Perspective British Education On The American Revolution, Devon Zimmerman, Dr. Eric Dursteler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While history attempts to be factual, history is primarily about perspective, which can sometimes lead to very biased information. Perspective causes countries to have significantly different accounts of the same events, especially wars. In the case of the American Revolution, England and the United States have very different historical accounts of the war. Americans are proud of this event because it represents the birth of their nation and the triumph of common people. While it is said that history is written by the victors, the vanquished certainly have a story of their own. However, little insight is given to what …

The Earliest Mormon Understanding Of God, Benjamin Brown, Dr. David L. Paulsen Apr 2014

The Earliest Mormon Understanding Of God, Benjamin Brown, Dr. David L. Paulsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research for this project was supportive of a larger project already underway by Dr. Paulsen and Ari Bruening. The project investigates claims by certain scholars concerning the teachings of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (hereafter LDS Church) relative to the nature of God. The final product was a manuscript submitted to Koffard Books for subsequent publication. In addition to my research role, I also extensively edited the document, proposed and implemented major changes, and managed a research staff of a size varying from six to twelve people in their research, editing, fact checking, and writing …

The Greek And Sanskrit Grammarians: A Comparative Analysis, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. Polyxeni Strolonga Apr 2014

The Greek And Sanskrit Grammarians: A Comparative Analysis, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. Polyxeni Strolonga

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The ancient grammarians of Greece and India followed an informatively comparable methodology in the light of modern-day ancient language pedagogy. This study examined the ancient texts of the Ashtadhyayi by Panini, Techne Grammike by Dionysius Thrax, and Peri Syntaxeos by Apollonius Dyscolus in terms of structure, potential application, and the reality of modern-day application within educational settings. Such an analysis yielded invaluable information concerning a number of common trends and principles among two of the central civilizations to influence the indo-european tradition of language teaching throughout the ages.

“Never In History Did Ill-Breeding Contribute So Much Towards The Dissolution Of Empire”: Cultural Attitudes In A Passage To India, Leigh Meister, Dr. Francesca Lawson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I can honestly say that this ORCA-sponsored research has turned out to be one of the most valuable aspects of my undergraduate career. While several elements of my finished project did not meet my initial expectations, this research opportunity taught me to be adaptable and observant. My ORCA research is the foundation for my Honors thesis, which will be submitted in its final form in the upcoming months for graduation with University Honors in April 2012. This completed thesis will be available in the Harold B. Lee Library for reference by future library patrons.

2010-2011 Orca Grant Final Report, Barret Daniel Lybbert, Dr. Brian Roberts Apr 2014

2010-2011 Orca Grant Final Report, Barret Daniel Lybbert, Dr. Brian Roberts

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This past summer I was able to travel to New York City from 5 July to 12 July. My initial plan was to stay a few days in a hotel and a few in a student hostel. However, I saved money by networking with a few of my father’s contacts and found an LDS family (BYU alumni) to host me while I was staying in the city. It was very helpful to have a New Yorker to guide me through my first few days in the city. I spent the first day navigating the library and acquiring and completing the …

Exploring The Everyday Phenomena Of Post-Genocide Rwanda Through Ethnographic Creative Nonfiction Writing, Danielle Leavitt, Dr. Leonard Tourney Apr 2014

Exploring The Everyday Phenomena Of Post-Genocide Rwanda Through Ethnographic Creative Nonfiction Writing, Danielle Leavitt, Dr. Leonard Tourney

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Despite often being esteemed for its remarkable recovery after the complete devastation that occurred in the 1994 genocide, Rwanda is still portrayed as a dangerously plundered society and remains recognized in the West as an un-safe, chaotic area. These incorrect perceptions are rife with contradictory assertions and images and a discrepancy between image and reality.1 Post-genocide Rwanda—only seventeen years after its historically brutal genocide—is listed as one of the safest and most orderly countries in Africa. Additionally, sexually, physically, and emotionally abused and neglected Rwandan women, who made up 70% of Rwanda’s living population following the catastrophe in 1994, have …

The Accessions Of Jane, Mary, And Elizabeth: Redefining Royal, Religious, And Sexual Power In History And Literature, Averyl Dietering, Dr. Brandie Siegfried Apr 2014

The Accessions Of Jane, Mary, And Elizabeth: Redefining Royal, Religious, And Sexual Power In History And Literature, Averyl Dietering, Dr. Brandie Siegfried

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The object of my ORCA grant project was to show the changing views toward royalty/power, religion, and gender which occurred in English culture and literature as direct results of the reigns of Lady Jane Grey, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. I focused specifically on the accessions of these three women, since a monarch’s accession (the time after the previous monarch’s death and the new monarch’s coronation) is a critical period for establishing the monarch’s style and methods of rule. To understand the effect which these monarchs had on English literature, I researched and analyzed three seventeenth-century English plays, each of …

The Turn To Dystopia In Young Adult Literature, Justin Scholes, Dr. Jon Ostenson Apr 2014

The Turn To Dystopia In Young Adult Literature, Justin Scholes, Dr. Jon Ostenson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the last several years, there has been tremendous growth in the amount of literature written for and read by young adults. With this spike, the discussion has grown concerning the subject matter of these novels, and a general curiosity as to what teens find appealing in these works. One major recent trend in YA literature is the dystopian novel.

Technology In Exile: Tibetan Digital Literacy, Kristen Nicole Cardon, Dr. Gideon Burton Apr 2014

Technology In Exile: Tibetan Digital Literacy, Kristen Nicole Cardon, Dr. Gideon Burton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My field study in India last summer was successful on many levels. I was interested to find that, contrary to my expectations, the effect of digital media on the Tibetans‟ efforts to preserve their culture was not wholly negative. Certainly, digitalization brings with it much Western and specifically American culture, but the nearly universal response to my interviews and surveys was that digital tools have had a positive effect on Tibetan cultural preservation. One administrator explained to me that the school structure itself was created to reinforce Tibetan values. Essentially, he said, the pedagogy itself is the natural preservation of …

Discovering And Documenting The Treasures Of Siena Siena Walks, Matthew Hatch, Cinzia Donatelli Noble Apr 2014

Discovering And Documenting The Treasures Of Siena Siena Walks, Matthew Hatch, Cinzia Donatelli Noble

Journal of Undergraduate Research

We researched and prepared a travel itinerary (booklet) mainly for students who study abroad and fulfill academic internships to Siena, Italy, and it will serve tourists traveling through BYU travel services. This booklet is still being finalized, but it is in the process of being published. Siena is a diverse and unique city because it is divided into competing districts. The competition, which started more than 400 years ago, fostered an environment where the competing districts always tried to outdo their municipal others. Consequentially, the architecture, arts, music, festivals, etc. in each district are superb. My task was to research …

A Topographical Analysis Of Sixteenth Century Lyon As A Platform For Female Authors, Kristen Brown, Dr. Robert J. Hudson Apr 2014

A Topographical Analysis Of Sixteenth Century Lyon As A Platform For Female Authors, Kristen Brown, Dr. Robert J. Hudson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I would like to begin by thanking the Office of Research & Creative Activities for the incredible opportunity I had to pursue in-‐depth research on a topic that I found exciting and pertinent to my studies at BYU. This grant gave me the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor, and to expand my academic experience during my last year as an undergraduate. Thanks to the funding, I was able to complete my honors thesis, which now is available for the public to view in the Harold B. Lee Library (call number XX(5369221.1).

Guide To Estonian Jewish Genealogy, Patrick Monson, Thom Edlund Apr 2014

Guide To Estonian Jewish Genealogy, Patrick Monson, Thom Edlund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I am from Bountiful, Utah. I am majoring in Family History-Genealogy. During the 2011 Spring Term, I worked at the Estonian Historical Archives in Tartu, Estonia, and the Estonian Jewish Museum in Tallinn, Estonia. At the Archives, my major responsibility was to translate Hebrew documents into Estonian. I also transliterated Yiddish documents. At the Museum, I gave tours to visitors (mostly Jewish tourists from the U.S. and Israel), teaching them about the history and culture of Estonia’s Jews. At both the Archives and Museum, I composed a Guide to Estonian Jewish Genealogical Research, which is available at the Museum’s website, …

Change In Grammatical Competence On Study Abroad, Falk Kleinert, Dr. Hans Wilhelm Apr 2014

Change In Grammatical Competence On Study Abroad, Falk Kleinert, Dr. Hans Wilhelm

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Study abroad has long been argued to be the best way to improve a student´s proficiency in a second language, e.g., German. This claim is being scrutinized more and more in light of the current economic struggles facing many students and their families. This project is part of a larger study conducted by my mentor, Dr. Kelling, and his colleague, Dr. Laura Smith, assessing language gains on Berlin study abroad.

Language Acquisition On A German Study Abroad, Zachary Duvall, Dr. Laura Smith Apr 2014

Language Acquisition On A German Study Abroad, Zachary Duvall, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With increasingly difficult economic circumstances, ever more evidence is needed to validate the costs of study abroad. This study iss part of a larger project conducted by my mentor, Dr. Laura Smith and her colleague Dr. Kelling to assess linguistic and cultural changes by students during study abroad.

Literary Landscapes: Mapping Emergent American Identity In Transatlantic Narratives Of Women's Travel Of The Long Eighteenth Century, Leah Thomas Apr 2014

Literary Landscapes: Mapping Emergent American Identity In Transatlantic Narratives Of Women's Travel Of The Long Eighteenth Century, Leah Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines intersections of the development of maps from the Native American-European encounter to the establishment of the New Republic and transatlantic British and American narratives of women’s travel of the long eighteenth century. Early European and American maps that depict the Americas analyzed as parallel “texts” to canonical and lesser-known women’s narratives ranging from 1688 to 1801 reveal further insights into both maps and these narratives otherwise not apparent. I argue that as mapping of the New World developed, this mapping influenced representations of women’s geographic and social mobility and emergent “American” identity in transatlantic narratives. These narratives, …

Stacy Busch Senior Honors Recital: Composer, Stacy Busch Apr 2014

Stacy Busch Senior Honors Recital: Composer, Stacy Busch

Honors Theses

The works that I selected to be performed on my senior recital are pieces that I’ve written over the course of the past year. Most of my work is predicated on the exploration of the human condition. Rather than focusing on technical and cerebral complexities that abstract music aims to explore, my work is grounded in the emotional realm. This foundation, I hope, provokes the listener to experience and question the characteristics of their own self. The largest piece on my program, “Creature”, is a 20 minute multi-‐media production that includes video, electronic music and live performance. The piece is …

The Cinematographic Portrayal Of Americans In Late Stalin Era Soviet Film, James K. Pringle, Dr. Raissa Solovieva Apr 2014

The Cinematographic Portrayal Of Americans In Late Stalin Era Soviet Film, James K. Pringle, Dr. Raissa Solovieva

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This research examines how Soviet directors portrayed Americans in the six anti-American films released during the late Stalin era (1945-1953). These six films are The Russian Question (dir. Romm, 1947), Meeting on the Elbe (dir. Alexandrov, 1949), Court of Honor (dir. Room, 1949), Conspiracy of the Doomed (dir. Kalatozov, 1950), Secret Mission (dir. Romm, 1950), and Silvery Dust (dir. Room, 1953). This period is unique because the allies of World War II became enemies in the Cold War. Accordingly, for the first time in Soviet Cinema, Americans became the enemy. Since the Soviet Union was a closed country, all actors …

Siena Walks, Danielle Woodall, Cinzia Noble

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In partnership with the Kennedy Center of Brigham Young University and Dr. Cinzia Noble, I worked on publishing ‘Siena Walks,’ a travel guide with specific walks in Siena Italy. As a photography major, I provided the necessary images for the publication.
