Clark Gardner: The Curious Case Of Mr. Rich And Mrs. Gardner, Brianna E. Kirk Apr 2014

Clark Gardner: The Curious Case Of Mr. Rich And Mrs. Gardner, Brianna E. Kirk

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The story of Clark Gardner, his double amputation, and his pension records are still surrounded by two other clouds of ambiguity concerning his neighbor and friend, Edward A. Rich, and Gardner’s wife. Rich relayed information to a special examiner about the nature of Gardner’s injuries. He claimed to know Gardner before the war began, revealing that Gardner had running sores on his right leg prior to enlisting in the 10th New York Heavy Artillery. This made the amputation he received in 1879 a result of this pre-existing condition instead of the sickness Gardner claimed to acquire from Staten …

Closely Distant, Crisha Yantis Apr 2014

Closely Distant, Crisha Yantis

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Drawing upon my own experiences and observations of the world around me I use the figure to explore what it means to be human. This body of work addresses the universal experience of anxiety through the dynamics of both personal and interpersonal relationships, specifically focusing on fear of the unknown or what subconsciously lies just out of our comfort or understanding.

Often what is unknown is also what brings about questions of our own power and what we can or cannot control. In my work, I address ideas of power and powerlessness formally through what the figures lack. Their control …

The Savior In Lds Sermons, Joseph R. Stuart, Dr. J Spencer Fluhman Apr 2014

The Savior In Lds Sermons, Joseph R. Stuart, Dr. J Spencer Fluhman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research concerned the apostolic teachings in the General Conferences of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-‐day Saints from 1951-‐2007. Specifically, I was searching for evidence that the Church has always been Christ-‐centric in its official teachings. Christ was certainly in present, in every talk, but theological discussions were few and far between. In reading the words of prophets, seers, and revelators, I was able to grasp where the Church has come from, and perhaps where it is going in the future.

Elaine Cannon Papers, Melissa Kotter, Dr. Mary Jane Woodger Apr 2014

Elaine Cannon Papers, Melissa Kotter, Dr. Mary Jane Woodger

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Elaine Cannon Papers project involved deep research through primary sources (Elaine Cannon’s journals and papers) about Elaine Cannon’s life. Once the research is completed, a proposal for a biography appearing in Richard Turley’s Women of Faith in the Latter Days volumes will be written. The Women of Faith in the Latter Days volume featuring modern-day women will not be ready for a few years (this biography would appear in volume 6), so the Elaine Cannon biography will not be published until a few years later. However, the proposal for the biography will be submitted once the deep-research is finished.

Student Growth Measures For Teacher And Principal Evaluations, Suzanne Franco, Allison Mueller Apr 2014

Student Growth Measures For Teacher And Principal Evaluations, Suzanne Franco, Allison Mueller

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

There were three Ohio research efforts about Student Growth Measures (SGM) for Teacher and Principal Evaluations: 1) extended testing for previously non-‐tested subjects and grades, 2) relationship between the teacher and principal evaluation systems’ implementation plans, and 3) an empirical study of Local Education Agencies’ (LEA) year-‐end evaluation data from 2013. In 2011-‐2012 Ohio offered a 2 year mini-‐grant to LEAs agreeing to administer extended testing for Value-‐Added measures (VAM) in grades and content areas not represented in the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA). The mini-‐grant allowed the state to create testing pools sufficient to produce teacher-‐level VAMs. American College Testing …

Crime And Poverty In Detroit: A Cross-Referential Critical Analysis Of Ideographs And Framing, Jacob Jerome Nickell Apr 2014

Crime And Poverty In Detroit: A Cross-Referential Critical Analysis Of Ideographs And Framing, Jacob Jerome Nickell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how the relationship between crime and poverty is rhetorically constructed within the news media. To this end, I investigate the content of twelve news articles, published online, that offered coverage of crime in the city of Detroit, Michigan. I employ three methods in my criticism of these texts: ideographic analysis, critical framing analysis, and an approach that considers ideographs and framings elements to be rhetorical constructions that function together. In each phase of my analysis, I developed ideological themes from concepts emerging from the texts. I then approached my discussion of these findings from a perspective of …

A Sequence Of French Vernacular Architectural Design And Construction Methods In Colonial North America, 1690 -- 1850, Wade Terrell Tharp Apr 2014

A Sequence Of French Vernacular Architectural Design And Construction Methods In Colonial North America, 1690 -- 1850, Wade Terrell Tharp

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines published and unpublished historical archaeological research, historical documents research, and datable extant buildings to develop a temporal and geographical sequence of French colonial architectural designs and construction methods, particularly the poteaux-en-terre (posts-in-ground) and poteaux-sur-solle (posts-on-sill) elements in vernacular buildings, from the Western Great Lakes region to Louisiana, dating from 1690 to 1850. Such a sequence is needed to provide a basis for scholarship, discovery, and hypotheses about prospective French colonial archaeological sites. The integration of architectural material culture data and the historical record could also further scholarship on subjects such as how the French in colonial North …

Preserving Byu’S Ancient Papyri, Parchments, And Ostraca, Joseph Trevor Antley, Dr. Lincoln Blumell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Currently approximately 80% of the hundreds of ancient papyrus, parchment, and ostracon fragments contained in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections of BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library have been successfully preserved by myself and the others who worked on this project with me, ensuring that these valuable pieces will survive in-tact for many more years in BYU’s collection. The remaining 20%, mostly consisting of very small fragments, will be preserved by us over the coming year.

Kirtland School House, Caitlin Daniels, Dr. Dennis Wright Apr 2014

Kirtland School House, Caitlin Daniels, Dr. Dennis Wright

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Kirtland school house restored by the LDS Church was built by studying the building’s history using historical records and research. However, little research was done into how the school operated during its time. Throughout the project, we collected and analyzed primary and secondary research concerning the school, including the educational practices and laws of the time. This information was composed into an organized report divided into specialized sections which allow the reader to easily identify different aspects of the school house and how it was run.
